chairman. Earl Blumenaur
addresses a receptive AHS
student body. Mr.
Blumenaur, 21, has for the
past year, spent uncountable
hours and dollars to
formulate a campaign to
lower the voting age. This
term he graduated from
Lewis and Clark College and
is now spending all of his
time working for this issue.

WITH THE STUDENT IN MIND
Headlines are designed to tell
you who's in the foreground of
the news. To find who's in back
of the news you have to dig a
little deeper.
Never before have our
younger generations been able to
see so clearly and so completely
the earth they are destined to
inherit. If they are not meek
about accepting the challenges
of the future it is because this is
not a time for meekness.
Today, 14-year-olds watch as
the problems of ideologies,
ecology, racial strife and
economics are examined on
television; they examine these
issues for themselves and discuss
them daily in the classroom.
An 18-year-old is expected to
assume the responsibilities of
taxation and military obligation,
and to accept many adult legal

and financial obligations. Well
over three million of our 19-and
20-year-olds are enrolled in
colleges and universities, while
60 percent of these are also
working full time.
The young adult's
commitment to the future is
expressed by his deep personal
involvement in the present. As
Headstart, Peace Corps, and
VISTA volunteers, as unpaid
political campaign workers, as
hospital aides, recreation
assistants, counselors and so on,
these young people are full
participants in our society
without benefit of full
partnership. In 46 states,
under-21's are still removed
from the voting privilege.

young people's mature social
conscience and political
enthusiasm when voters go to
the polls next May 26 to
consider lowering this state's
minimum voting age to 19.
Two states are voting on the
issue this November and at least
nine others will submit similar
proposals to their citizens in
November of 1970. It has been
pointed out time and again that
no greater step could be taken
toward eliminating the
generation gap than by closing
this most visible rift.
Oregonians for GO 19 has
launched a full-scale effort to
educate the public about the
responsibility and capabilities of
our 19-and 20-year-olds. In the
months ahead we will need your
support. If you can lend
assistance in any form, please
contact us.
