440 RELAY TEAM member
Randy Samuelson passes the
baton to Scott Elliot in a
practice session. The team
will try their luck again
tomorrow at the Cal-Ore
Relays to be held at SOC.
The Ashland High track
squad began the season with a
fourth place finish in the annual
Indian Club relays last Saturday.
While not placing well in the
meet, the team set out to prove
its predicted second place finish
in the state meet by breaking
two meet records.
With several returning
members and many new
prospects the team is expected
to better their third place finish
at district, and tie for sixth at
state.
The squad's best
performances in the Indian Club
relays came in the individual
field events. Most of the running
events are relays, and depth is
needed to place well.
Pardee Breaks Record
Individually, Jim Pardee
placed first in the long jump
with a jump of 22'-3V4" breaking
his own meet record. Scott Toll
and Brian Keiling placed second
and third respectively in the high
jump, both at 6". Jerry Sutton
took fourth in the Shot Put at
46' 3-", and Bruce Dickerson
threw the javelin 174'9" to also
place fourth.

In the running events, Roger
Hall finished first in the 70-yd.
high hurdles with a time of 8.6
to set a new meet record. Dan
Phillips placed fourth in the
100-yd. dash at 10.6. Bill
McPherson ran the mile in
4:50.6 to place fifth.
Returners from last years
team include several placers at
the state meet. Heading the list
are Roger Hall and Brian (Ceiling
who placed second in the high
hurdles and high jump
respectively. Also back for
another year are Randy
Samuelson and Mike Toney,
members of the seventh placing
mile relay team.
New members to round out
the relay team are Al Lord,
sophomore, and Ed Beadle,
senior transfer from Bakersfield,
California.
Sophs Join Team
Sophomore Bill McPherson
heads the list of new prospects
as he broke the two-mile record
in an earlier meet with a time of
10:09. Also joining the team will
be Scott Toll and Wynn Wenker,
both of whom have high jumped
6 ft.
The Ashland High team has
been predicted by Who's Who in
Oregon to finish second in the
state meet on the basis of last
years performances.
Ashland placed third in the
district last year at 111 points
with Grants Pass and Roseburg
taking the team honors.
Tomorrow the squad will
compete in the Ore-Cal relays at
Southern Oregon College. The
relays are co-sponsored by
Ashland and SOC.
The district meet will be at
Crater on May 22-23. The state
meet will be held at Eugene and
the University of Oregon field
the 30 and 31 of May.

Girls Track Begins,
First Meet April 10
The girls track team is now
underway with its first meet on
April 10.
Approximately 30 girls are
going out for track this year.
However, Coach Kimball has not
yet decided exactly who will
participate in what activity on
the team.
The tentative schedule for
this season is as follows; April
10, Med ford here; April 17,
Klamath Falls there; April 24,
Grants Pass here; May 1, Crater
and Phoenix here; May 9,
District Meet Grants Pass, and
Saturday May 6, the state track
meet at Springfield Oregon.
Since the team is relatively
new and inexperienced, Coach
Kimball has absolutely no idea
how they will do.
Come and support your team,
they may surprise you!
