FOUR MATCHES take place at once during the two-day
district tournament, held last weekend in the AHS gym. Six
Southern Oregon Conference teams fielded nearly a hundred
contestants in the tourney. The Grants Pass Cavemen
overpowered most of the meet, sending 13 wrestlers to state
competition in Cor va His this weekend. Ashland's John Durbin
will represent the Grizzlies in the state meet, striving for a 123
lb. weight class state title.
Skiers Attend First Meet
With five returning racers, a
relatively new 12 member ski
team headed for Lakeview and
the season's first giant slalom.
Hosted by Lakeview High
School, the giant slalom course
was skied at Warner Canyon. All
the Cascade District schools
were invited to attend the
February 21st event.
There is both a boys and a
girls team competing. Five
members and an alternate are
included on one team. Each
person is seated on the racing
team according to his ability.
However, they race as teams.
The course run is either a slalom
or a giant slalom.
Coach Forbes "Buck" Rogers
mentioned that "the loss of
Ellen and Chris Dawkins would
be felt, but that the remaining
team had good potential."
Returning members of the
team are Dean Fortmiller,
Christine Hald, Sue Routh, Josh
Sceva and Stephanie Sceva.
Starting later than previous
years, the team has a full
schedule leading right up to the
state meet. On February 28,
they journey to Bend, racing at
Hoodoo in the Santiam Pass.
This meet is hosted by South
Eugene High School. The
Ashland Invitational Ski Meet
held at Mt. Ashland is next on
their agenda the weekend of
March 7.
March 14 finds the skiers
returning to Bend, this time
racing on Mt. Bachelor. Hosting
the event will be Bend High
School. If each meet brings the
twelve back victorious, the state
