Six Southern Oregon Conference teams fielded nearly a hundred contestants in the tourney. The Grants Pass Cavemen overpowered most of the meet, sending 13 wrestlers to state competition in Cor va His this weekend. Ashland's John Durbin will represent the Grizzlies in the state meet, striving for a 123 lb. weight class state title. Skiers Attend First Meet With five returning racers, a relatively new 12 member ski team headed for Lakeview and the season's first giant slalom. Hosted by Lakeview High School, the giant slalom course was skied at Warner Canyon. All the Cascade District schools were invited to attend the February 21st event. There is both a boys and a girls team competing. Five members and an alternate are included on one team. Each person is seated on the racing team according to his ability. However, they race as teams. The course run is either a slalom or a giant slalom. Coach Forbes "Buck" Rogers mentioned that "the loss of Ellen and Chris Dawkins would be felt, but that the remaining team had good potential." Returning members of the team are Dean Fortmiller, Christine Hald, Sue Routh, Josh Sceva and Stephanie Sceva. Starting later than previous years, the team has a full schedule leading right up to the state meet. On February 28, they journey to Bend, racing at Hoodoo in the Santiam Pass. This meet is hosted by South Eugene High School. The Ashland Invitational Ski Meet held at Mt. Ashland is next on their agenda the weekend of March 7. March 14 finds the skiers returning to Bend, this time racing on Mt. Bachelor. Hosting the event will be Bend High School. If each meet brings the twelve back victorious, the state meet at Mt. Durbin defeated three opponents and drew one bye to work his way to victory in the 123 pound class to qualify for the state tournament this weekend in Corvallis. His season record stands at an impressive 20 win-one tie mark, remaining team are Sue Binkley, David Cowan, Gwen Driezsus, Al Lord; Bruce Lorber, Kacey MacGraw, and Lyle Speirs. Most weekends, one can find the two teams diligently practicing runs and improving times on Mt. Ashland's slopes. He beat three wrestlers and drew one bye to clinch the title. undefeated in all 2 1 matches this season. Other Finalists Three other Grizzlies picked up honors in the final rounds. Frank Goodlett took a third place in the 130 weight class, Dave Taylor snagged a third in the 191 class, and Kent Smith held on to a fourth in the Durbin-dominated 123 class. The four wrestlers were the only AHS competitors to make either the semifinal or final rounds in the tourney as the Ashland squad turned up in the cellar of the six-team conference with 46 team points. Cavemen Dominate The meet was clearly dominated by a tough Grants Pass squad, who racked up 205 big team points, nearly doubling second place Roscburg's 106. The Cavemen qualified 15 men in the finals and will send seven champions and six runner-ups to the state meet tomorrow. Grizzly Upsets Wind In Tense Overtime The Ashland Grizzlies beat the Medford Black Tornadoes after overcoming a 13 point Medford lead, winning 67-63 in overtime. Ashland was the first team to score, but at the end of the first quarter the Tornados led 15-11, and at the end of the second led 32-21. Going into the third quarter, the Grizzlies were behind by 1 1 points. Then, behind the shooting of Brian Kieling and Randy Nelson, they began to catch up, closing the gap to 44-41 at the end of the period. With 4:41 left in the fourth quarter, Ashland tied the score at 49-49. Medford quickly regained the lead, but the Grizzlies tied again, at 51-51. With 19 seconds left in the fourth period, Ashland was leading 57-53. Medford then made two field goals, tying the game and sending it into overtime. Jones failed to make the finals, despite the victory. In the overtime, Kieling led the Grizzlies with six points and Jack King got two free shots. Head Coach Gary Phillips of the Grizzlies said of the game "I'm really pleased that we won. The team played a fine game, and everyone did a good job." The Grizzlies' record now stands at 2-16, with four games left to play. Bear Gymnasts Beat Tornado; Meet Crater The girls' gymnastics team stomped Medford in a dual meet by taking first place in every event. Sophomore Ellen Reynolds placed first in vaulting, balance beam, uneven bars, and all-around gymnast. Also placing for the Ashland squad were Pam Hoffbuhr, 1st floor-exercise; Julie Davies, 3rd in balance beam; and I-lame Fisher, 2nd unevens. Coach Betty Kimball commented that she was pleased with the performance of the team, and noted that the members were all young.
