Jonesey Speaks Out:
Let's Get
by Larry Jones
What ever happened to that good ole Ashland High spirit? Has it
vanished to the scenes of the weekly keggers? Maybe. Or maybe it's
been forgotten. Nevertheless, our school spirit and participation in
various activities have undergone dramatic changes that only
Ashland High students could create.
I agree the traditions from the "Alamo" days are becoming worn
out. It would seem obvious that the rah rah rah routine is of less
importance to some students than others. But activating those
drooling mouths of ours alone doesn't mean we have spirit. There is
much more meaning attached to this word.
In the last few years, participation in school activities has
decreased considerably. In fact, a group called the Cirizettes which
once was a prominent organization, no longer exists. Why? The
answer is simple. No one wanted to get involved. C an you imagine
what would happen if our athletes felt the same way?
Assemblies also show some kind of negligence toward school
spirit. Though I agree that pep assemblies should not be mandatory;
1 disagree with the dissenters' arguments. I feel that these students,
now in study hall during the time of assemblies, are not proud of
Ashland High School. This is not the right attitude.
The success of various school programs depends on the support of
the student body. Let's give more than "lip service" and really get
with it!
Apathy Deemed Main
Apathy among students and
faculty was considered the most
apparent and pressing problem
facing Ashland High School by
the Student-I'aculty Innovation
Committee.
At the first meeting
combining both young and old it
was agreed that the lack of
interest in school activities was
the major cause for the decline
in clubs and class involvement.
The committee composed of
eight students and twelve faculty
members is designed primarily
for the purpose of presenting
and developing new ideas w ithin
the school and improving upon
and evaluating the old methods.
The group discussed the
importance and role of such
items as outer class activities,
team teaching, mini-courses and
grades. These topics were
divided into various com mil tees
for further investigation.
The faculty members are:
Keith Mobley. chairman. John
Barlow, Harry Detwiller, Jean
I'owler, Keith Garrett, John
Gray, Marie Harkar. Betty
Kimball, Lance Locke, Bud
Silver, Don Vondracek, and
Margaret Zwick.

LETTERBOX
Dear Miss Davis:
May I take this means to tell
you and your fine staff how
much I enjoy this year's issues of
the school newspaper. The
stories are exceedingly well
written and researched. The
format of the paper is such that
we can tell that many, many
hours of planning takes place
before each publication.
May I also say that your
editorial staff has been very fair
with issues discussed - and this
isn't always easy.
Keep up the fine work.
Sincerely,
Bud Silver
