JERRY SUTTON, junior, was
chosen by the coaching staff
as Athlete of the Month for
football. Sutton, who doubles
as tight end on offense and
linebacker on defense, was
chosen because of his hustling
abilities.

Thu strange-looking contraption is Aixland High's newest addition to the PE department, the
UNIVERSAL GYM. This latest model in the Universal series weighs nearly lYi tons and is capable
of handling 13 people at a time, yet is completely portable. Each of the 13 stations has a weight
selection ranging from 7 to 750 lbs. and can perform a wide variety of exercises. This new addition
eliminates the necessity of a Urge area filled with bulky weights and minimizes the number of
weight lifters having to wait in line for a workout.

JIM McLEAN, senior, was
chosen as Athlete of the
Month for cross-country.
McLean has scored
consistently high in each
neet, with a total of 49 team
points to his credit.

Senior Jim McLean broke the
course record in leading the
Grizzly cross country team to
victory over Klamath Falls
earlier this season.
McLean took first with a
record breaking 12:45 clocking
as Ashland edged Klamath
27-28. The old record of 13:12
was set last year by Leonard Hill
of Phoenix.
Placing second for Ashland
and fourth overall was senior
Larry Edwards. Other varsity
runners placing were sophomore
Claude Neuenschwander, fifth;
senior Don McDonald, seventh;
sophomore Bill McPherson,
10th; Tom McDowell, 12th; and
senior John Richardson, 14th.
The team started the season
with a first place at the Crater
Invitational. Seven schools and

over 40 runners participated in
the meet.
Edwards and McLean came in
fifth and sixth to lead Ashland
runners.
Ashland slipped by Bend and
Roseburg with a lower score of
77. Also in the meet were North
Bend, Creswell, Phoenix, Eagle
Point, Gold Beach, and Crater.
Coming in behind Edwards
and McLean were
Neuenschwander, 12th;
Freshman Dan Morgan, 25th,
McDonald, 29th;, Junior Rob
Merriman, 39th; and
Richardson, 40th.
The second meet of the
season ended in a victory over
Crater for the Grizzlies. Again
Edwards and McLean lead
Ashland with McLean taking
first and Edwards third.
Later, in a meet at Grants
Pass, Ashland came in second
behind Grants Pass beating
Marshfield and Medford.
Larry Edwards placed fifth in
the meet with a 13:54 clocking,
improving his time 45 seconds
from the Crater meet. Jim
McLean placed sxith behind

Ashland runners in their narrow victory.
