The Roseburg Indians were
scalped by the Ashland Grizzlies
in a 31-8 upset victory on the
Indian's field.
Head football coach Lance
Locke said, "I just can't praise
those players highly enough. The
offense was great but the
defense was really something
else."
The Indians were rated high
because of team size and past
performances.
"We knew what we had to
do, and the boys went out and
really did it to them," said
Coach Locke.
The first quarter of the game
was very quiet, with control of
the football changing four times.
In the second period, the
Grizzlies got under way. With
6:57 left in the quarter, halfback
Jim Pardee caught an Ed Beadle
pass for a touchdown. Roger
Hall then caught another Beadle
pass for the two point
conversion.
The touchdown and
conversion climaxed a six-play
drive which started when Beadle
intercepted Indian quarterback
Don Wassom's pass on the 35
yd. line and ran it back for 50
yds.
When playing against
Anderson Jim Pardee opened the
second half of the game with an
80 yd. TD return of the kidkoff.
In the Roseburg game, Roger
Hall did just a bit better with an
82 yd. runback on the second
half opening kickoff. After
Grizzly blockers cleared a path.
Hall outran the other Indian
defenders.
Roseburg failed to move the
ball and punted from their own
16. Pardee grounded the ball at
the Ashland 43.
After ten plays, Beadle
sprinted 1 1 yds. for a third
Ashland touchdown and then
passed to fullback Randy
Samuelson for the 2 point
conversion.
This score made it a 24-0 ball
game. Within about 12 min.
Ashland scored 3 times against
the Indians.
Again Roseburg failed to
make enough yardage and
punted from their 35 for 25 yds.
where the ball fell out of
bounds.
Later, with the ball on
Roseburg's 28, the Grizzlies
fumbled and the Indians
recovered. They made one first
down, but got no further than
the Ashland 46.
In the fourth quarter Ashland
took over the ball, but could not
get anywhere. Roseburg then got
the ball on their 31 on a fair
catch of a Mark Engle punt.
On Ashland's one yard line,
Jim Pardee intercepted Don
Wassom's pass, stopping an
Indian drive before it could do
any damage.
After four plays Engle's punt
was partly blocked giving the
Indians the ball on the Ashland
16.
Six plays later Roseburg
quarterback John Noel drove
half a yard for six points.
Wassom then passed to Steve
Hewlett for two points.
With 2:07 left in the game
Pardee ran 29 yds. for a fourth
Grizzly touchdown, and Harley
Dixon kicked the extra point.
Coach Locke praised the
downfield blocking, quarterback
fakes, and all-around team play.
Because of this fine showing
by the Grizzlies, Ashland is now
rated seventh instead of 12th in
the state

Sophomores, JV's Hang Tough
The Sophomore and junior
varsity football teams are on
their way to completing their
respective schedules of six and
seven games.
The sophomore football team
has played two league games.
They have played one game with
Roseburg and one game with
Crater.
In the first game they played
Crater and won 38-6.
Danny Phillips made two of
the Ashland touchdowns. Other
team members who made one
touchdown apiece were Randy
McDougal, Dale Ekstrom, Bill
Feagen and Chuck Wiley.
The two-point conversion
was scored by Danny Phillips,
who ran the ball into the end
zone.
According to Coach Gary
Phillips, the team played a very
good all-around game. The
offensive team played very good
football, and the defensive team
did a fine job, allowing the
Crater team one touchdown.
In the game played against
Roseburg, the sophomores lost,
13-6. Phil Thompson made the
touchdown for Ashland.
Coach Phillips said, "we had a
good defense, but our offensive
team could not succeed in
getting underway."
Several of the sophomore
team members were sick and
unable to play.
Junior Varsity
The junior varsity football
team has played only one of its
league games.
This game was played against
Roseburg here and was won by
the Indians, 8-6.
Coach Keith GarTett said that
the team played a pretty good
game.
The Ashland squad's
touchdown was scored by
Harley Dixon, and climaxed a
good downfield drive.
Coach Garrett stated that
"the team pulled together during
the game very well, and if we
keep up this good teamwork we
should be able to win a good
share of our games."
The pre-season predictions
this year had the Ashland
Grizzlies and the Roseburg and
Medford teams battling for
Southern Oregon Conference
control, nearly the same as last
year's predictions.
Last year's Roseburg-Ashland
battle proved fatal to the Bears
as the Indians streaked past a
Grizzly lead to start down the
road to a league championship.
This year's clash is now past
history. Before the game, the
Orange ft. Roseburg High's
newspaper, had this to say of the
ensuing battle:
"Prediction-wise, the Indians
over the Grizzlies, 28-18. The
ability of the Indian defense to
get the ball for the offense,
which can move the ball on the
ground or through the air will be
too much for the Ashland
eleven."
Too much! . . . Step up,
Tornado, you're next.
