Aside from the foreign exchange students, Thad Young, junior, lived in Frankfurt, Germany, where his father was in the service. The school he attended in Frankfurt was a converted prison with heavy iron bars on the windows. Jan Sours has lived a year in Turkey, but was previously from Iowa. Her father is the president of Southern Oregon College. Many students come from Oregon and nearby states of Washington and California. Laura and Scott Elliott are from Oakland, California. They moved here because their mother had been living here and liked the city. Back in Oakland their grandfather is the editor of the Neighborhood Journal a small weekly newspaper. Concerning tomorrow's game she says, "Muera Medford!!!" Nedda likes Ashland and Lithia Park "with trees long and water with ducks. Very beautiful. I like." She says. Her favorite kind of food is "all kinds." This Chilean even likes chili which she had never tried before. Nedda would not let me print how many kilos she has gained since her arrival to the U.S. She thinks her"Mom" is a great cook. I asked Nedda about problems like drugs in Chile. In her city (about the size of Portland) there are no such problems even with no drinking age requirement. Senior From Turkey Mehmet Tasirlar is a nineteen year old Senior born in Malkara, Turkey. He likes both Ashland and America very much. Favorite Subjects Mehmet says, "Crafts is my favorite subject." He also likes Math very well. According to Mehmet, "It is not hard speaking English." He finds the school very different from the ones in Turkey. One reason Mehmet speaks English very well is because he has been studying it for about five years. The stores here in America fascinate the young man from Turkey. "There is so much wonderful. I believe all of the people of the world are proud of you." America was Nedda's "impossible dream." I think AHS has made that dream -better. ' an afternoon in the sun. choice! And they're so big!" is what he says about them. The shops in Turkey deal only in one product as a rule. All buying is done by a bargaining system. Like To Be Teacher Mehmet enjoys talking with different people. He would like to teach Turkish here. Mehmet believes that he can help other Turks learn Fnglish quickly. Mehmet toured twenty-one other states before coming to Ashland. He has no sisters or brothers. Chan From Hong Kong The second boy from a foreign country is Jacky Chan Jacky is a sixteen year old Junior from Hong Kong He has been in the United States for one month. Drawing fun Jacky lists drawing as his favorite subject. U.S. History gives him the most trouble. Answering questions is harder than speaking Fnglish. Last year Jacky was in England.
