WED., JUNE 4, 1969 ROGUE NEWS PACE SEVEN Srs. Hear McCall Chester McCall, president of the Black Student Union at SOC, spoke to seniors Thursday and Friday, May 15 and 16, in modern problems classes. McCall, 20-year-old black student from East Palo Alto, California, presented many controversial comments and opinions on the race situation in -1. A B.S.U. President, Chester McCall, speaks to E.C.O.N. classes. the Rogue Valley and America in general. In question and answer periods following his talks, McCall attempted to explain the new black revolution and the search for black identity in America. He explained that the black man feels left out of white society and has to look hard to find a life relevant to his culture. "Instead of doing service to the white society, 1 wanted to be a part of the American society," McCall told students. In some classes, McCall was received with quite respect or skepticism in others he met open hostility from students who felt his statements needed challenging. When asked in one session if he condoned violence, McCall answered, "Violence is never justified, but it's doing a good job. Violence gets what you ask for." McCollum, Lorber Place In Debate Ashland High School's debate squad was one of 12 schools competing in the Elmo Stevenson Invitational Debate Tournament held at Southern Oregon College May 9 and 10. At the tournament Jeff McCollum won a first place in expository speaking, and Bruce Lorber placed third in after dinner speaking. This tournament, which involved almost exclusively college level competition was an informal and "fun" affair for the debate squad. Other schools participating in the event included Crater and Bend High Schools, Humbolt State, Sacramento State, University of Nevada, University of Idaho, Portland State, Oregon College of Education, Eastern Oregon College, San Diego State, and Southern Oregon College. Lewis Comments When asked about this years debate squad Mr. Lewis said they were the "winningest group of seniors I have ever had." Boys' State Five students from Ashland Senior High will attend Boys State which will be held June 15-21 at Oregon State University at Corvallis, Oregon. Students attending from AHS will be Scott Jensen, Neil Ampel, Gary Brown, Randy Nelson, and Mark Hemdobler. The students are picked by the faculty on the basis of performance and interest in U.S. History. The students are sponsored by the American Legion. PERRINE'S GARLAh'D LEVIS WHITE STAG PETER'S SHOES CONVERSE KEDS on the plaza AHS Computer Class Tours Six Units Sixteen members of Ashland's High computer class traveled to Portland May 9th and 10th, to tour several computer installations. The purpose of the trip was to see the various applications of the computer in industry, education, and public service. Visits To Installations Members toured the Oregon State University computer center and the Sage installation The sage installation is located at Camp Adair Air Force Base, and one of the main purposes of the installation is to track incoming foreign enemy planes. They also toured the Department of Motor Vehicles in Salem and viewed a film on how the computer helps the policeman. In Portland they toured the United Airlines Reservation Installation. The main purpose of this installation is to provide customers with reservations. They also toured the United States Bank of America computer center, and the EDP central industrial installation. Attending Members Members who attended were Peggy Jurgens, Marjorie Rio, Terry McDougall, Debbie Keeton, Alice Dale, Lorienda Cluff, Judy Hyde, Cary Hammond, Pat Jennings, Floyd Wilson, Mike German, Ed Kufner, Mike Dehl, and Manuel Ortega. Chaperones for the trip were Mr. and Mrs. Garret. Other Activities Other activities this year have included demonstrations at Southern Oregon College. There will also be offered to students a summer computer course this summer. Phillips Chosen Head Flag Girl For Coming Year Sue Phillips was recently selected for the position as Head Flag Girl for the 1969-70 school year. Miss Phillips" activities include orchestra, Future Nurses of America, and a student council representative. She has been a Flag Girl since the beginning of her sophomore year. Three sophomore girls have been selected on the basis of tryouts, to belong to the AHS Flag Girls. They are Jackie Baker, Elaina Kerr, and Lynda Sweet. These girls, along with the remaining Flag Girls will perform during the football and basketball season. This summer, all the Flag girls plan to attend a camp in Oakland, California that is being held August 17-22. The group is planning on holding many fund raising projects to help pay part of the expenses.
