COACH BOB McKENZIE
There are five coaches that
will be leaving Ashland High
next year and one that is
retiring.
Leaving after seven years at
AHS as a Girls' PE teacher, Girls
track coach, and GRA advisor is
Miss Shirley Laney. Miss Laney
is going to the University of
Texas to work on her master's
degree. After achieving her
master's, Miss Laney can then
work as a college PE instructor.
Ashland's head coach in
football for three years, John
Buck, is going to Idaho State to
work on his master's in physical
education. He may also work as
an assistant freshman football
coach. He graduated from SOC
where he was an outstanding
linebacker for the Raiders. Buck
had his old number "IS" retired
last fall for his efforts in college
football. At AHS he has been an

COACH MAURICE RAY
assistant football coach for one
year, aa well as an assistant
track, wrestling, and soph,
basketball coach.
Maurice Ray, Ashland's
basketball coach for two years,
is headed also for Idaho State.
Ray will be working on his
master's, and be freshman coach.
In his two years at AHS he has
also been cross country and
assistant track coach.
After three years as head
baseball coach, Don Butler is
going back to beloved
Minnesota. In Minnesota he will
be a high school JV football and
basketball coach.
Going to central Oregon is
Bob Mackenzie, after several
years at Ashland High. While at
AHS he was the head tennis
coach and sophomore basketball
coach. Mackenzie was also a
stalwart in Ashland's English

Retiring, but not leaving is
Keith Mobley as head wrestling
New Staff Joins AHS
There were seven new
coaches hired to fill the vacant
spots left at Ashland High for
1969-70 school year.
Miss Betty Jo Kimball will be
the new Girls PE teacher, as
well as, girls' track coach and
GRA advisor. Miss Kimball
graduated from the University of
Oregon and taught for five years
at Willamette High. For the past
several years she has operated
her own Kunjo Casuals Shop.
Taking over as the head of
the gridiron will be Lance
Locke. For the past three years
he was an assistant football
coach in charge of the backfield.
Locke graduated from AHS and
Southern Oregon College where
he was a standout quarterback.
From there he went on to the
University of Minnesota where
he gained his masters degree.
Timothy Brown, who will

coach for 10 years at AHS. His
10 years is the longest coaching
stint in the entire district of any
graduate this year from Linfield,
will take over as head wrestling
coach and assistant football and
track coach. Brown is a graduate
of Medford Senior High where
he was a star football player and
wrestler. He will be helping Mr.
Copple next year with Boys'
physical education.
The new head basketball
coach will be Gary Phillips,
elevated up from Ashland Junior
High where he has been for the
past five years. Phillips went to
school in West Virginia and was
an all-State basketball player and
outstanding football player. He
graduated from Southern
Oregon College and started
teaching a combined studies
class at AJHS.
Heading the baseball squad
will be Arlan Foote, a graduate
of Roseburg High and Southern
Oregon College. At both schools

sport. Mobley will continue
teaching woodshop at AHS for
next year.
Foote was an outstanding
baseball player as a pitcher.
During the winter season, he will
be the sophomore basketball
coach. This past year he was a
recreational advisor for
Ashland's elementary schools.
Next year he will be taking over
as Driver's Training instructor.
The new head cross country
and assistant track coach will be
Bill White, a graduate from SOC.
In college White was a star
hurdler on the Raider track
squad and top defensive
halfback in football. He will also
be taking over the vacant spot
left in math.
William Leybold, AHS U.S.
History teacher, will be taking
over the reins as head tennis
coach. Leybold will be coaching
after an absence of three years,
when he was head baseball
coach.
