Hill Hailed Top H
Senior Kathy Hill, has been
selected Betty Crocker
llomemaker of Tomorrow for
AI1S.
Miss Hill was selected on the
basis of a test, manufactured by
Betty Crocker, which was taken
by senior girls throughout the
United States on Dec. 3, 1968.
She received the highest score
of all senior girls at AHS.
The purpose of the test is to
enhance the dignity and prestige
of the American home; stimulate
interest in homemaking; and
emphasize the outstanding
contribution to the home being
AHS Art Students
Submit 9 Entries
Ashland High School has nine
entries in the Oregon Scholastic
Art Awards Contest, which is
being held in Portlend, Ore.
The entries this year include;
collographs, encaustic paintings,
water color over gesso, and a
wood schulpture.
In the collographs division,
Emily Hungerford, Sally Beagle,
and Lois Hoadley have entries.
In the encaustic painting
division, Sara Fink, Lisa
Fort miller, and David Phelps
have entries. Encaustic paintings
are made with melted wax
crayons.
Tracy Turner and Janet
Eshoo have entries in the water
color division, and Bob
Barnum's entry is a wood
sculpture.
The Oregon Scholastic Art
Awards Contest is being
sponsored by the Equitable
savings and Loan Association.
The exhibit will be held
February 24, through March 7,
1969, at the equitable Center in
Portland, where the entries will
be displayed to the public.
Shriners Pick
For St. Metro
Ashland's High School's Skip
Golden has been selected to
represent AHS in the annual
State-Metro Shrine Game.
Golden was picked for his
outstanding performance as
center in football this past
season. For his efforts Golden
was chosen as first team
All-Conference, and honorable
mention All-State.
Golden is also a two year
letterman and football, and a
three year letterman in track.
Selected as an alternate was
Conny Sixkiller at a
quarter-back position. Sixkiller,
as a three year letterman, also
achieved All-Conference honors,
as well as second team all-state.

and a runner-up for each of the
50 states and Washington, D C.
is to be selected. Each of the
state winners will receive a
J 1500. scholarship and an
expense paid tour of the Eastern
United States. The runner-up
from each state will receive a
$500 educational grant.
The Betty Crocker
All-American llomemaker of
Tomorrow and the three
national runner-ups will be
named from the state winners.
The Betty Crocker
All-American llomemaker of
Tomorrow will have her
scholarship increased to SS000.
Runners-ups will also have their
scholarships increased.
Two Honored As
Julane Thompson and Phil
Michael were selected as the
Citizens of the Nine Weeks for
their contributions to Ashland
High. This was announced by
Julane Thompson
and Phil Michael

Future Nurses
Miss Thompson was selected
because of her work as President
of Future Nurses of America.
Miss Thompson is the Secretary
of the Hope Corps, and is a
member of the American Field
Service. Miss Thompson is also a
reporter for the Rogue News.
She also is a reader for Charlotta
Bair.
Two Year Letterman
Michael was selected because
he is the leader of the Pep Band,
and a member of the Stage
Band. He is also the Senior
AHS SENDS COPELAND
TO CONFERENCE
Five Rogue Valley
students left Wednesday to
spend three days at the
Northwest Regional Youth
Conference sponsored by the
YMCA in Longvicw,
Washington.
Kelly Copeland is the
Ashland High representative
attending. Four others, three
from Medford, and one from
SOC. are also going.
The purpose of the three
day clinic is to teach the
attending students ways to
better guide and aid special
ed students in areas of
swimming, dancing and
recreational activities.
The events of the
workshop are centered
around speakers and teaching
recreational guidance to the
Hope Corps members.
Instruction is given by
doctors and professional
people in these fields.
This is an annual
workshop which draws
interested students from all
over the Northwest.

Great Decisions
Nine Ashland High students
are getting a chance to voice
their opinions and suggestions
concerning our nation's foreign
policy by participating in this
year's Great Decisions program.
The annual program,
sponsored by the Foreign Policy
Association and now in its ISth
year, includes decussions on
eight different topics concerning
our foreign policy around the
world.
After each discussion, the
members of Great Decisions
groups all over the country fill
out a ballot on which they
indicate their opinions

is a two year Letterman,
lettering in tennis, and a
National Honor Society
member.
The ni'rnose of the Citi7i-n of
the Nine Weeks Committee is to
select students who have
performed outstanding services
for Ashland High.

The results of each state's
balloting are sent to its senators
and congressmen and act as an
important indication of public
opinion.
The AHS group, which meets
Monday evenings at the school
library, is assisted by William
Lawrence, World History
teacher, and includes Sally
Beable, Loy Dale, Karin
Davidson, James Downing, Debi
Gates, Betsy Hester, Anne
Mayea, Jeff McCollum, and
Sandy Schoonover.
Great Decisions is a
nationwide program and anyone
can attend the discussion groups.
Topics for discussion plus
nonpartisan information on each
topic are included in an official
booklet which the Foreign
Policy association puts out.
In addition, newspapers and
radio and TV stations cooperate
with the program. Each Sunday
an article on the Great Decisions
topic of the week appears in the
Medford Mail Tribune.
Programs on the topic can be
heard on Tuesday evenings at
6:30 p.m. on KMED radio.
