'Almosf Over' Lilette "When I say there are 3,100 of you, though, there is one thought that I do not want you to get, do not think to your self: 'Who am I? I am only one out of 3,100.' That is wrong. You are you." This is an excerpt from an eagle" letter sent to me every month by George Edgell, AFS Well, it was pretty hard to Director of Programs, convince myself that "I was I" when I walked through the halls of AHS that first morn ing of school. I felt like a com plete stranger . . . like maybe I didn't know that "I was I." About 750 strange kids and one little terrified me! I must admit that those first days were lonely ones with only my two American sisters and a couple of brave souls to show me the ropes. Although the Americans have occupied the Philippines and my city, Bacolod. could very well be any American city, there were quite a few adjustings I had to do. The cost of labor in the Phil ippines is quite cheap and you could find anybody to do any job for you. The absence of porters and bell boys in the American airports really struck me. When we AFS'ers landed Engstrom Makes '67 Appointments This article is supposed to give you an idea about what is going to happen at AHS next year. As things stand right now, this depends a lot on you. As far as I am concerned, that welcome freshmen dance was just one of those things that won't happen again, at least not for some time. However, we are going to have to con vince quite a few people of this fact and our actions for the last days of school this year and the start of next year are going to play a part in de termining the extent of our fu ture activities. The student council recently selected Ken Willis to the po sitoin of SSS chairman, primar ily because he is willing to work and is interested in the school as a whole. Ken chose as committee members Cathy Silverwood and John Zupan, juniors, and Gary Slack and Patrice Roberts, sophomores. Two freshmen will be chosen at the start of next year to complete the commit tee member appointments. Todd Merriman has been ap pointed as chairman of the boy of the month committee while Judy Sessions will head the citizen of the six weeks com mittee. The purpose of these two groups is to honor deserv ing people within the school for their activities. Parties and other enjoyable activities should be spread out over a three-year period, not just crammed into the last year of school. What do I plan to do about it? I have not thought of any thing yet, but if enough people think this situation should be corrected, then action can be taken next year. Year ences, some of them educa tional, unusual, and some of them are just experiences, and I have enjoyed all of them. I've seen a little bit of the American way of life and I can look at it side by side with the Filipino way of life. Each is different, yet it all boils down to one point; that there are a lot of differences, yet each is a perfectly satisfactory way to live. There is a tendency to think of all the AFS'ers just as "an AFS student," forgetting that everybody is different, having a different experience, coming from a different culture, with a different road of life ahead of him. My stay in Ashland has been a very rewarding and marvel ous experience. From my first football game to the last game of the year, I've enjoyed every minute of it. Now my year is almost over. In the past there have been mistakes and things that could have been done bet ter. The change has been com ing in a group of students rather than the building or the policies of the institution. Perhaps some of the under classmen have noticed the sen iors walking about with a sort of glassy stare. Some of the other symptoms include cold and clammy hands, a tendency to trip over permanently placed objects, such as water fountains and sundials, and blissful ig norance of surroundings includ ing books and teachers. Many people have a tendency to brush off this strange state of affairs with a condescending nod and the word "Senioritis." This, friends, is an unfair and unreasonable notion. The epi demic that, granted, affects only the seniors is a far more complex problem. As a warning, it should be stated that the victims of this disaster may become violent when confronted by certain un comfortable ideals. For instance, if an idealistic sophomore tells an incapacitated senior that he is going to be a doctor, always was going to be a doctor, and is going to Stanford University school of medicine on a scholar ship that will undoubtedly be given him, the senior is likely to stifle a groan and, unless re strained, may incur a few bruises upon the unsuspecting sophomore. Although this action cannot be condoned, it must be ex plained. Seymour (at that time a self assured senior) was called in by his equally self assured counselor and coun seled, "Oh, but Seymour Senior, you can't expect to get into Stanford School of Medicine with scores of this caliber." Sure enough. Three weeks ago Stanford sent Seymour a re freshing letter that began, "Due to the tremendous number of applicants we have received this year . . ." Two weeks ago Seymour received a letter from the National Scholarship com mission informing him that his parents' confidential statement (all four pages of it) had gone into the computer wrong bo cause the programmer had torn the "Do not crack, bend or mu tilate" form in half.
