Cmm ncemeiill1 Eweit! s Planned Plans were recently announ ced for the 76th annual com mencement activities in honor of the Ashland Senior High School graduating class of 1967. Reverend B. J. Holland of Ash land's First Presbyterian Church will be the main speaker at baccalaureate services. These services are scheduled for Sun day evening, June 4, in the gym. The service is a religious one and attendance is optional for graduating seniors. Other baccalaureate speakers will in clude Rev. Bill Gunn of the Congregational Church, who will give the scriptural reading, and Rev. Joseph Dubay of the Trinity Episcopal Church who will give the invocation and benediction. Guest Speaker Mr. Clay Meyers, Oregon's secretary of state, will be guest speaker for commencement exercises. Senior class presi dent, Mike Knapp, will lead the line of march as 173 seniors receive diplomas. Graduation is set for Thursday evening, June 8, at 8:00 p.m. in the gym. Other speakers for the cere monies will include Rev. Robert Cornwall of the Christian Cen ter Assembly of God, and stu dent speakers Ginny Lawrence, valedictorian, and Lisa Tumble son, salutatorian. Student speakers are selected on the Fifteen Finish Advanced Math This year is an important one for the Ashland Senior High School and Junior High School man departments. It is the cul mination of a six-year acceler ated mathematics program. The new math system was originally designed to enable AHS students to be better pre pared to meet the world's changing society and increased technological advances. It be came necessary to introduce some new mathematical con- Lawrence Wins Realtors' Award Ginny Lawrence was re cently named winner of the local speech contest sponsored by the Oregon Association of Real Estate Boards. Ginny won a $100 cash prize from the Ashland Board of Real tors and Multiple Listing Serv ice for writing and presenting the best speech on the topic, "Opportunities in Real Estate." Six finalists were chosen from the original 13 contestants to appear before a panel of judges. The Real Estate Board has invited Ginny and the five other finalists, Dave Parsons, Cathy Phelps, Lisa Tumbleson, Chris Houghton, and Jack Davis, to attend a weekly breakfast of the board. Many Activities Both students have partici pated in debate, able and gifted classes at Southern Oregon Col lege, Drama Guild, National Honor Society, and Inter national Relations Club. Ginny, who has maintained a 3.976 grade point average, is the editor of the Rogue News. She is also a student council representative. Quill and Scroll secretary, and a member of interclub council. As a result of her activities, Ginny has been selected for several honors this year. The student council and the citizen of the six-weeks committee chose her for a citizen of the six-weeks award. Ginny was also honored by the Elks for the most valuable student schol arship. Recently she won the real estate speech contest Ginny plans to attend the University of Missouri to study journalism next year. Lisa, who has maintained a 3.955 grade point average, is one of six girls honored by the Business and Professional Wo men as girl of the term. Lisa is also a member of American Field Service and humanities seminar. Next year Lisa will attend Barnard University in New York. cepts and to teach old concepts in a more meaningful manner. An increased demand for scien tists and mathematicians creat ed a need for the more talented students to proceed at a faster pace than before. This program is not geared for just college-bound students. It is designed to benefit all stu dents. A student may move through the program at any rate he is capable of. For example, algebra courses may be started as early as eighth grade or as late as the senior year. Ashland High School seniors Lynn Bessonette, Kent Brostad, Olin Ford, Craig Kirby, Doug Kirby, Craig Korthase, Bill Lindow, John Matteson, Bill Petitt, Lonny Slack, Dale Soren son, Mike Starnes, Randy Voris, Curtis White, and Dave Work enrolled in the accelerated pro gram in the seventh grade along with approximately 35 other stu dents. These 15 senior boys, who are presently enrolled in the analysis class, are the first students to have completed Ashland's accelerated math pro gram. The theme, "We know not what the future holds, but we know who holds the fu ture," will be featured. Another feature of the ceremonies will be the playing of the Senior class song, "Exodus." Juniors Assist Fourteen junior girls have been selected as ushers and archbearers. Ushers will be Beverly Brackman, Linda Fremd, Mary Hill, Pam How ard, Anne Schwiebert, and Pan ola Witt Archbearers will be Nonda Ainsworth, Vicki Ded rick, Dian Demo, Cindy Kaylor, Linda Lyda, Chris Revel, Karen Tretsven, and Pearline Witt Following graduation cere monies, parents of graduating seniors will host students for an all-night party. Activities will include a dance, a movie, skat ing, swimming, and a breakfast Demo Named Sweetheart Dian Demo was crowned De Molay District Sweetheart Sat urday night, April 29, at the coronation dance in the Masonic Temple. She will now represent the district at state competition August 17, 18 and 19. Dian competed against Gayno Thurston of Grants Pass and Kathy Wertz of Medford for the district title. The girls were judged on interviews, personal ity and looks. Each girl was re quired to make a folder which was also one of the points of judging. They were each intro duced to the chapters at the district convention Saturday morning and were then inter viewed by the Medford and Grants Pass mayors at the Ma sonic Temple.
