Next Wednesday is Tonio O'Malley's birthday, and this column
will be dedicated to his memory.
But first a word from our sponsor Mellow Yellow Suntan
Lotion.
"Now that summer is coming, we at Burma Shave Labora
tories would like to tell you about our wonderful new summer sun
product Mellow Yellow Suntan Lotion. Our product brings the
sun to you. A secret ingredient gives you any kind of a bright
orange tan you want Simply apply four times hourly. What is
more, if you use Mellow Yellow Suntan Lotion properly, your skin
is guaranteed not to peel! You may dry up and turn into a Maude
Fritchard, but your skin definitely will not peel."
Tonio O'Malley was an Irish-Italian born in the sewers of
Paris. He had the acceptable number of brothers and sisters
seventeen. Tonio's father was the tax collector for a popular and
beloved slum lord. The O'Malley family moved often, as their sec
tion of the sewer was forever clogged with bills. (To say nothing
of jeans, mikes or Masatoshis, the neighbor's kids.)
Of all his brothers and sisters, Tonio liked Alphonse the best
Tonio wanted to grow up to be just like Alphonse. Tonio went to
live with Al in the Bastille, where he had been put into retire
ment by the Paris police.
Alphonse began teaching little Tonio everything he knew.
Tonio learned fast and soon began pulling jobs. Tonio would
hold up Gogliano's Ravioli Restaurant on Tuesdays and Luigi the
fish vendor on Fridays.
With France in the Common Market, Tonio soon became an
international thief. The Big Six Fish Vendors and Restauranteurs
Union offered a huge reward for his arrest.
But the time came when Tonio decided to get out of the fish
racket. The police had tracked down and destroyed most of his
storehouses when the refrigerators were turned off to observe
Charles de Gaulle's birthday.
Tonio was faced with a period of indecision. At first he
switched to the mail service. He stayed with it for two years until
he had completed his stamp collection. Tonio then began robbing
the loose change counter of French banks. He slowly worked up
to the top. Tonio would only rob secret Swiss bank accounts. And
then it happened at 25 Tonio went into semi-retirement
Now for the conclusion to our story.
During his period of semi-retirement, Tonio began to think
about wiping his slate clean. After all, who would honor him
when he died? Tonio turned himself in for the reward money. He
sent a Roman orphanage on an ocean cruise around the world
with it. Naturally, the Pope set aside his birthday as a day of
thanksgiving. And that is why Tonio O'Malley is honored and re
spected the world over.

With only a few weeks left
of school, Seniors are hoping
the end would hurry. But is it
the end? Not really, it's only
the beginning of many senior
activities. One of these being
the Senior all night party.
This year things are going as
tradition has it. Seniors are hav
ing a variety of entertaining
activities to fill the evening.
Senior Party
Other schools are also privi
leged to have an all night sen
ior party. Many much the same
as the one held at AHS. At
Thurston High in Springfield,
members of the Senior class be
gin the evening with a dance
and midnight buffet followed by
such activities as bowling, swim
ming, an interest movie, bil
liards, miniature golf, roller
skating, and ending the night's
activities with an early morn
ing breakfast. Live music for
the dance is of the choice of the
class. All activities are going
continuously all night free of
charge for all Seniors.
Though this party is quite
similar to the one at Ashland
High, there are a few ideas
which could be added or sub
tracted to make the evening a
most memorable one for all
Seniors.
