Baseball, Tennis Teams Nab Wins RECORD HOLDER in the pole vault, Roger Springer, displays the form which helped him break the school record. Roger cleared the bar at 13 feet four inches. Three Meets Track Team Downs E. P. Ashland High's track team started the season off with a second place, a victory, and two defeats. The team tied for second in the Cal-Ore Relays in the B di vision, defeated Eagle Point 78V57M., placed fifth at the Rogue Relays with 38 points, and lost to Grants Pass, 76-20. Cal-Ore Relays Ashland finished with a total of two firsts in class B compe tition at the annual Cal-Ore Relays held at Southern Oregon College. Against Eagle Point the team collected nine firsts, nine sec onds, and seven thirds. One of the firsts was Roger Springer's new pole vault record of 13 feet four inches. Field Winners In the field events, Ashland took firsts in the javelin, pole vault, broad jump, and swept all three places in the discus. They took second place in the shot put and high jump. In the track events, the Grizz lies took firsts in the 220, two ATHLETE OF Roberts Steve Roberts, a junior, was selected Athlete of the Month for the month of April because of fine shooting as the first man on the golf team. Steve felt his best match so far this season was against Crater, at Medford, when he shot an 82. Letterman Roberts has lettered in golf for three years, his freshman, sophomore, and junior years and is currently an active mem ber of Lettermen's Club. He lettered as a freshman in Sa benth, Kansas, where he also went to the Kansas State Tour nament and placed fourth in team events. Golf Award Last year Steve was elected for the "Most Valuable Golfer" award. He also participates in the sports of basketball and football. PROM BOUND? The mile relay team is com posed of Dick Boulton, Lonny Slack, Terry Neuenschwander, and Jay Fischer. Lon Gossage, Bill Petit, Roger Springer, and Jon Olson make up the 440 re lay team. Second Places Second places were in the 100, 220, 440, 880, mile and low hurdles. Boulton and Neuen Girls1 Track Team Ashland High's girls track team, which is composed of 17 girls, recently lost dual meets with Crater and Grants Pass. So far they have had only two track meets. Crater defeated Ashland 61 to 31 in the girls' first meet of the season. In this meet Judy Jameson took first in the 100 yard dash and Linda Cannon placed first in the 880. Judi Ni dever placed second in the javelin while Kathy Brown placed second in the high jump. THE MONTH Honored His favorite hobbies are hunt ing and fishing and working on his car. He also considers golf ing as his hobby, which he has been playing for seven years. Lonnie participates on the relay team as well as broad jumping. schwander had two of the sec ond places each. There were two tracksters who earned two thirds. They were Gossage and Skip Golden. At the Rogue Relays, Ashland tallied one first place victory, one second place and three thirds. The only event in which Ash land won was in the discus where Gene Willis heaved a toss of 149 feet, 2V4 inches. The girls who placed third were Kathy Brown in the 80 meter hurdles, Judy Jameson in the 220, Judi Nidever in the discus, and Kerry Roberts in the high jump. Coming in fourth were Maria Anderson in the 220, Mary Bill ings in the discus, and Kathy Roberts in the javelin. Lose To GP Grants Pass defeated the local girls in their second meet. The score was 61 to 34. Judy Jame son topped two events, coming in first in the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Judy Nidever placed first in the discus and Carolyn Boat placed first in the shot put. The girls that came in sec ond against the Grants Pass girls were Linda Cannon in the 880, Mary Billings in the discus, Kerry Roberts in the high jump, Kathy Brown in the 80 meter hurdles, and Carlista Holland in the 440. Main 482-5059 The Ashland High school baseball team and tennis team have each won one game since April 13. The victory for the diamond men was a practice game against Eagle Point. In that contest the Grizzlies wound up on top with a score of 9-4. Scoring Most of the scoring for the local club came in two three run innings. Both of the innings saw two hits, a walk by the E.P. pitcher, and an error. In the first inning, Gary Mac Graw and Mike Schoonover both cracked hits for the Grizzlies. Schoonover slammed out an other hit in the third inning, hitting a double. Jim Stephen son also got on base in the third inning with a single. Both Schoonover and Stephen son collected two hits. In other games played by the baseball team, Medford's Black Tornado nine defeated the local team 5-1, 4-0 and 8-4. In double headers with the Crater Comets and the Roseburg Indians, all four games were lost. The Grizz lies dropped the games by scores of 4-2 and 6-0 against Crater, and 6-0 and 1-0 against the Roseburg team. Tennis Results After losing several dual matches, the tennis team grab bed its first win in a 4-3 victory over the Crater netmen. Loses state meet which will be held later this spring. In order to qualify for the state contest, the girls must meet the standard requirements of time in the track events or distance in the field events. One member of the team, Judy Jameson, has qualified for the state meet for the past two years. Basketball Hired By Maurice Ray, coach of the state "B" championship basket ball team, will be head coach at Ashland High next year. Stan Jobe, District 5 school superintendent, said Ray has been hired to replace retiring coach George Keil. Ray is a graduate of Pacific University where he played bas ketball. The coach also has done graduate work at University of Washington and University of Oregon. Medford's HIS Dale Bowles and Marilyn Miller have the right idea "just wear a smile and a Jantzen" from Robinson Bros. Ashland players who were winners in their individual matches were Steve Buckelew, John Perry and Steve Craft in the competition in the singles matches. In the doubles com petition the team of Buckelew and Perry won while the team of Craig and Doug Kirby lost The team dropped decisions in dual matches with Medford and defending state champions, Roseburg. Medford defeated the local team by a score of 6-1, while Roseburg was vic torious over the Bears by a score of 7-0. The net team now has a 1-2 mark in the conference standings. Varsity Golfers Trample Comets The Ashland High varsity golf team's season now stands at four losses and one win. After losing their first dual match to Medford and Grants Pass. 15-0, the golfers beat Crater 15-0, but lost the next week in another dual match to Medford, 150, and Klamath Falls, 8V2-6M!. In their second match, the varsity golfers each took the maximum of three points from their Crater High opponents. Players and scores: Bill Kuhl wein 94, Jim Work 88, John Zupan 86, Steve Roberts 81. and Scott Weaver 86. The JVs, Tim Mobley, Clint Smith, and Gregg Torrey, won 12 points, the maximum, from the Crater JVs. On April 14, the varsity trav eled to Klamath Falls for a dual meet with their hosts and Medford. Three Grizzlies scored against the Pels, Bill Kuhlwein 92, John Zupan 93, and Scott Weaver 83. Jim Work, 96, and Steve Roberts, 84, did not win any points. Mentor District He coached basketball, foot ball, and track for the past six years at Powers. Ray's teams have won 104 games while los ing 29 in basketball, many of the victories over A-2 schools. Keil quit his post as head basketball coach toward the end of the season. His plans for the future are uncertain.
