ALAN ENGSTROM: 'Increase student participation."
One of the two candidates vying for the office of student body
president is Alan Engstrom.
Ranking in the upper ten percent of his class, Alan was ac
cepted into the National Honor Socity this spring. He is also a
member of the debate team.
Because of his outstanding work on th Rogue News staff,
Alan was selected as a Quill and Scroll member. He also repre
sented Ashland at the Orgon Scholastic Press Conference in
Eugene last fall. Alan also represents Ashland on the Jackson
County Youth Council.
Athletically, Alan is a member of the wrestling team. He
wrestled during both his sophomore and junior years. He hopes,
if elected, to stimulate student participation: He said:
Someone once described progress as the elimination of
one nuisance by the creation of another. Perhaps this state
ment la true, but if elected Student Body President, I would
try to lead with inspiration and with creativeness so that
student council activities would not be referred to as a
nuisance. I would try to stimulate participation and interest
in school affairs.
The first definite project which I would bring before the
student council would be to make the car rally an annual
event with a revolving trophy.
I would like to see the next school year be even more
successful than this year. This can be achieved with an active
student council but it is up to the students to elect such
officers.
Calendar
THURSDAY: The election
assembly will be held today.
Each of the candidates for
office as well as their cam
paign managers will present
their views. Candidates for
rally squad will do a routine.
No rallies or campaigning
will take place after today.
FRIDAY: Students will vote
during their English classes
tomorrow. Tomorrow night
the inter-club council will
sponsor the election dance
when the results of the elec
tions will be announced.
JIM WILLIAMS: "Accomplish student wishes."
After being an active participant in student government dur
ing his sophomore and junior years. Jim Williams now seeks the
office of student body president. During his opportunities for
service both in and outside of school, Jim has developed a unique
approach to his responsibility. He stated:
I look upon a school much as I look upon a car. A car is
useless without a driver, just as a student body is useless
without a president. Likewise, a driver (president) can do
nothing without four wheels (the other student body officers),
an engine (the student council), and the body of the car (the
student body).
Because of this view, I feel that the students must always
support their president, and the president must comply with
the wishes of the students. Therefore, I will work toward
accomplishing the wishes which the students make known to
me through the student council.
Jim has been involved in a wide variety of activities through
out his high school years. At the present time, in his office of
Junior class president, Jim is concerned with planning and
organizing the upcoming prom. Jim is also a member of student
council and has participated in that group for the past two years.
In addition to his activities in student government, Jim is
active in dramatics. He has taken part in several productions this
year and is vice-president of the Drama Guild.
Jim was recently accepted to take part in next summer's
American Heritage tour. He will leave next June to take part in
the European tour program.

PHIL MICHAEL: "Obtain activities"
One of three candidates seeking the office of second
vice-president is Phil Michael. Phil has participated
in a number of activities both in school and in his
church. Currently he is a member of the Ashland
High School band. In his church, Phil is the youth
group membership chairman.
In addition to his activities in school and at church,
Phil reported that he is interested in tennis. He also
said that he enjoys all outdoor sports, especially
hunting and fishing.
Phil hopes to gain the office of second vice presi
dent in order to help encourage student backing in
the areas of athletics which are often ignored by the
students. Phil said:
If elected to the office of second vice president,
I will attempt to obtain more class and school ac
tivities. In addition, I will try to gain more support
for athletics, especially the less popular sports. Be
yond this, I will do my best to accept any reason
able suggestion from any student and to relay that
suggestion for consideration by the student counciL
During her sophomore year, Kathy Hill has partici
pated in many school organizations. She reported
that she wishes to hold the office of second vice presi
dent in order that she might have an opportunity to
represent the students in student council. She said:
If one is elected to the office of second vice presi
dent, he is expected to represent the student body
at all executive and student council meetings. The
second vice president should express the opinions
of the student body and work for the betterment of
Ashland High School.
Through the performance of his duties as eval
uation committee chairman, the second vice presi
dent must give a fair evaluation report to the stu
dent body.
The second vice president should be able to repre
sent the students. If I am elected, I will fulfill these
duties.
Participation in a variety of school groups has
given Kathy numerous opportunities for leadership.
She is a member of the American Field Service and
the International Relations Club.

tunities for gaining an ability for leadership qualify
her for the office of second vice president Patrice

office of second vice president to the best of my
ability and to display proper conduct at all times
during my term.
