TumblesonNamed Jack Dauis Visits Salem For bpw Award Studies Government Junior Jack Davis returned home recently after spending two days in Salem participating in the county-wide congressional scholar program. f u JACK DAVIS represented Ashland High School as he spent two days in Salem studying the working of the state government. He stayed with Representative Hart and was one of ten Jackson County Juniors participating in the program. Youth Council Adds Unity Four Ashland High School students are members of an organization designed to pro mote greater understanding be tween the student and the adult population of southern Oregon. The organization, the Jackson County Youth Council, is in its third year as a public service group. Several years ago, the Oregon Debaters For State Four debaters qualified for the state debate tournament at the district individual finals at Phoenix. Three more debaters received alternate positions. Mike Lewis will travel to the state tournament at Oregon State University on the basis of a first place win in radio. Ginny Lawrence placed first in extemporaneous speaking. Ginny is a member of the Ox ford debate team which will also compete at OSU on April 13-15. Cathy Phelps was a second place winner in impromptu speaking at Phoenix. However, Jack studied the gov ernment at the state level. Meets Governor Jack left March 22 and stayed with Floyde Hart, state repre sentative from Medford. During his stay in Salem he sat in on sessions of the Oregon House of Representatives and observed committee meetings. In addition, he also had the opportunity to meet Governor Tom McCall. Jack reported that the pur pose of the session was to in crease student understanding of the organization and running of state government. He said that each participant is expected to help increase his fellow stu dents' understanding by discuss ing his experience with them. Ten Students The annual program gives 10 Jackson County students an op portunity to visit their state capitol. The Jackson County representative hosts two stu dents at a time for five weeks. Ashland combines with Medford High School so that each school sends one representative each year. State Youth Council suggested that Oregon's counties initiate a Youth Council program. Under the guidance of Mr. John Kie sow, the council has grown to include representatives from all Rogue Valley high schools. The Youth Council has a two fold purpose. Its major purpose is to promote understanding and communication between stu- Qualify Tourney Hoffman. Paula competed in the serious interpretation event. Dave Parsons, Mary Alley, and Curtis White received alter nate positions to the state tour nament on the basis of third place wins in their events. Dave captured a third place with his after dinner speech. Mary received a third in oration. Curtis, Ginny's partner on the Oxford debate team, placed third in extemporaneous speaking. In addition, five more Ashland debaters made the finals in their individual events. Enid Langer, Curtis White, Lisa Tumbleson, Jack Davis, Alan Engstrom, and Mary Alley were finalists. Active Student In addition to being selected for the congressional scholars program. Jack is active in extra-curricular activities. Last year he served as Sophomore class president. He has also been a member of the debate team for the past two years. Discussion Slated For Library Week A panel discussion to be held at the public library on April 17 will give students and parents an opportunity to learn more about the literature used in the Ashland High School English program. Three high school students, Jim Williams, Margaret Whil lock, and Susan Beecher, and Mrs. Hattie Converse, English teacher, will participate in the dents and adults. One way in which the Council achieves this goal is by representing the youth of Jackson County at many adult meetings. The second purpose of the group is to provide a variety of youth activities for students of the Rogue Valley. In this way, students at Ashland High School are given the chance to partici pate in non-athletic activities with students from other high schools. One project currently being sponsored by the Youth Council is a county-wide car rally on Saturday, April 9. Ashland High School's repre sentatives on the council include seniors Craig Korthase and Chris Wiley and juniors Alan Engstrom and Kathy Roberts. Nomination of council candi dates is made by current mem bers with final selections made by school administrations. f If It tr it 1 . Phone 482-3481 Ghees 482-2866 Senior Lisa Tumbleson was recently honored as the fifth girl of the term. She was chosen on the basis of her activities and her high scholastic achieve ment. Lisa ranks second scholastic ally in the Senior class. She has participated in the Able and Gifted classes at Southern Ore gon College for the past three years. Last year she attended the first Project Prometheus program sponsored by SOC. During her junior year she was discussion. The panel, which is being organized in connection with National Library Week, will discuss literature from the se lected reading list. The books have been chosen to encourage man's better understanding of himself in a rapidly developing technological culture. Reading List Three of the books suggested for reading, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Walden by Henry Thoreau, and The Odys sey by Homer, have been in cluded in the local English pro gram. In addition, members of the panel will read additional books from the list. The discussion of the panel group will revolve around the list of books. Anyone interested in hearing the discussion of literature and learning more about the books read in the high school English classes is welcome to attend the session. Paperbacks All of the books included on the suggested reading list will be available at the public library in paperback for those who wish to read them. She became a National Merit fi nalist and a semi-finalist in the national competition for the National Honor Society Schol arship. In addition to these, Lisa received a scholarship to Bar nard College in New York City. Lisa has participated in nu merous school activities in addi tion to compiling an impressive scholastic record. She has been a member of the Art Service Corps for one year and is a member of the newly organized International Relations club. Club Member She has also participated in the American Field Service club for two years and the Drama Guild and Thespians club for three years. Lisa is also a mem ber of the debate team. The Humanities Seminar. National Honor Society, and French club are also included in her list of activities. Lisa received the pin which is given by the Business and Pro fessional Women each six weeks period. At the end of that period she will pass on the pin to the next girl to be honored. On the basis of her selection. Lisa is now eligible for the girl of the year award which will be given by the BPW. S&H 270 E.
