Track, Tennis, Golf ; 0 BASEBALL PLAYERS Sam Real (batting) and Grant Luna (catching) practice for an upcoming game against Med ford. The team has been unable to defeat the Tornado so far this year. The only win so far this year for the baseball team has been a victory over Eagle Point. Bears Drop E.R; Lose To Medford Ashland High School's base ball team won and lost a game during their first two exhibition Rames of the season. They drop ped Eagle Point 3 2, and were defeated by Medford 6 3. In the Eagle Point game, all the scoring for the game came in the fifth inning, with Ashland squeezing out the deciding run. The Grizzlies had only four hits and made three errors, while Eagle Point had six hits and made two miscues. Three Single Three players singled for the Hears. They were Gary Mac Graw who singled twice. Sonny Sixkiller and Sam Beal. John White singled twice for Eagle Point. Ashland's hurlers Rick Wad dell and Sixkiller fanned 10 batters and walked only a total of three. Eagle Point pitchers Dcnzel, Carney, Harvey Wood and Bill Thurman struck out five and walked six batters. Fifth Inning Pinch hitter Sam Beal started things off for the Grizzlies in the fifth with a safe bunt. Rob ert Williamson walked and then stole second. Ken Dickerson walked to load the bases. Then MatGraw hit a sharp single scoring Beal and Williamson. Dickerson advanced to third. MacGraw then stole second, and Dickerson went home when the catcher missed the ball, and then played on MacGraw. Coach John Butler was pleased with his pitchers' performances but was not satisfied with the hitting and some of the infield's fielding. Medford Loss In the 6-3 loss to Medford, Sam Beal rapped out an extra base hit with a double. Ken Dickerson and Rick Waddell each had two hits, both of them singles. Gary MacGraw and Mike Schoonover each got a safe hit. Ashland moundsmen Beal and Bud Wallace registered four strike outs and five walks. The Grizzlies will play Rose burg tomorrow at Roseburg, with the game getting under way at 1 p.m. Spring Seasons The track, golf, and tennis teams started their seasons last weekend against tough competi tion. This year, all three teams have good material, tough sea sons, and hard work ahead of them in one of the hardest con ferences in the state. Ashland's track team, coached by Jan Underwood, John Buck and George Keil, participated at the Cal-Ore Relays last Satur day. The team has a strong field with lots of depth and ability. Several seniors, Gene Willis, Seniors Dick Calhoun, Terry Neuen schwander, and Roger Springer among others, are returning to aid the team and are expected to have very productive seasons. Jack Anderson, Jay Fisher and Lon Gossage are sophomores to watch in the year to come. The team has a lot of good under classmen with ability, good in dividuals, and much more speed than in many past years. Golf Team The golf team, coached by Dick Copple, played their first match, a tri-meet against Grants Pass and Medford, last Friday at the Oak Knoll Golf Course in Ashland. The Varsity consisted of Bill Kuhlwein playing first man, Steve Roberts, John Zupan, Dave Work, and Jim Work fol lowing him. All five are return ing Lettermen. The junior var sity also played during this match. The JV team was led by Clint Smith at sixth man (a Racers Compete For Last Time The last ski race of the sea son was held at Mount Bachelor on March 18. Mr. Locke chose the five best racers to compete. Chris Hald raced through the course with the fastest Ashland time of 104.7 seconds. Roger Wigen was second with 112.3 sees. Chris Wiley had 128.7, Suzi Cope finished with 1360, and Kris Keil had 284.9. The fastest time was 88.5, taken by Paul Skillern, the junior expert from South Eugene. Ashland placed 19th out of 21 teams. South Eugene, Bend, and Medford took first. Although only six matches are scheduled before District, May 15, the team should be ready for it. If a total team score of 320 is obtained, the Bears will gain a berth at the State Tour ney in Portland the next week. All team matches except the latter two are held on Fridays. The tennis team has only two returning Lettermen, Doug and Craig Kirby. One more senior ATHLETE OF MacGraw Named Because of his good showing and fine efforts in the first two baseball games, junior Gary MacGraw has been named Ath lete of the Month for the month of March. MacGraw drove in the tieing runs against Eagle Point with a sharp single with bases loaded. His single scored two, and his steal to second base scored the player on third to win the game. Gary plays at first base, and has hit two singles against Eagle Point and one against Medford. He has walked at least once in each of the games. Gary has yet to letter here in Ashland, as it is his first year at Ashland High School. How ever, he did letter in baseball last year at Woodside High School in California. He also plays basketball during the win ter season. MacGraw's favorite hobbies are mountain climbing, back packing, skiing, model airplane building, and fishing. Started will be picked, determined by competition. There are no jun iors on the team, but some very promising sophomores are on it. They include John Perry, Steve Craft, Phil Michael, Ed Wight and David Galati. Coach Bob McKenzie expects to add several Junior High School boys to the squad to help increase the depth for future years. Their first match was against Medford, here, last Saturday.
