    Seniors Attend
Ethics Symposium
Seniors from all over the
county attended the Ethics Sym
posium sponsored by the Jack
son County Intermediate Edu
cation Office. This event was
held at the Southern Oregon
College campus on March 21
and 22.
All students involved were
asked to participate in a small
Advanced Music
Course Offered
In an attempt to offer stu
dents an opportunity to special
ize in a specific area of study,
Ashland High School offers a
class which many students do
no realize exists.
Music theory class is opened
only to those students who plan
to major in music in college.
The students must be in orches
tra, band, or choirs, although
there are some exceptions.
The purpose of the class is to
help prepare AHS students for
college level work in music. In
some cases students who have
been enrolled in the class have
received advance placement
credit and have been able to
skip their first year of music
study in college.
Study in the class is aimed at
providing the student with a
good knowledge of the back
ground of music.
Fowler Elected To
OBEA State Post
Mrs. Jean C. Fowler, Ashland
High School teacher and head
of the Business Education De
partment, has been elected sec
retary of the Oregon Business
Education Association.
Mrs. Fowler, who was install
ed at the annual spring confer
ence of the OBEA, will serve as
secretary of the organization for
one year.
After being employed as a
secretary for 20 years, Mrs.

group panel discussion dealing
with questions relating to mod
ern ethical problems. The dis
cussion group that the students
were in depended on the stu
dent's interest There were 20
topics to choose from. Topics
offered covered a wide variety
of subjects from automation to
censorship.
During these panel - small
group meetings, students were
asked to listen to the panel
members discuss the specific
problems. Panel members in
cluded various Jackson County
educators and businessmen.
After the students heard the
panel members, they then ac
tively participated in the dis
cussions of these panel groups.
Dr. Dan Rhoades, Iliff School
of Theology, Denver, Colorado,
gave the keynote address on
March 21. Mr. II. J. Hamilton,
chief counsel of the Oregon
State Bureau of Labor, also gave
an address. Mr. Hamilton's ad
dress was on "Ethics and Race
Relations."
For entertainment, Barre
Toelken, noted folk singer, gave
a concert at the Britt Ballroom
on the evening of March 21.
On March 22, Robert B. Dun
can gave an address on "Ethics
in Government." Also on the
22nd, the students saw "Lilies
of the Field" at a downtown
theater in Medford.
Fowler began teaching when she
came to AHS in 1961. She re
ceived her Bachelor of Science
degree from the University of
Alaska and her Master of Sci
ence degree from Southern Ore
gon College. She is also a cer
tified professional secretary.
Mrs. Fowler is also a member
of the National Secretaries As
sociation and the Delta Kappa
Gamma Society as well as main
taining membership in the
QBEA.

Career Night
BPW Offers Girls
A career night is being plan
ned by the Ashland Business and
Professional Women for all
Ashland High School senior
girls. The program will be held
Tuesday night in the English
building from 7:00 to 9:00.
The program will be organized
around a question and answer
session. It is aimed at giving
every senior girl an opportunity
to discuss the vocation of her
choice with a woman employed
in that field or a related field.
What people will be available
for the girls to speak with will
be determined by what the
questionnaires indicated. On the
questionnaires passed out to
them, they had their choice of
speakers in the following occu
pations: a beauty operator, a
buyer, bookkeeper, airline stew
ardess, dental assistant, lab
technician, interior decorator,
teacher, telephone operator, sec
retary, receptionist, social work
er, sales clerk, nurse, camp
counselor, maid, waitress, and
Musical Comedian
Amuses Students
Mr. Joss Wind, well-known
European musical comedian,
performed for the Ashland
High School student body dur
ing an all-school assembly
March 6.
Wind, who came to Ashland
through the National School As
sembly program, amazed his
audience with his versatility.
His talents ranged from his
musical skills to athletic ability
displaped as he successfully
blew a ping pong ball from his
mouth through the basket while
standing behind the free throw
line.
Impersonations of such per
sonalities as Jack Benny, Dean
Martin, and John Wayne added
to the humor of the program.
Wind also performed amazing
musical novelties using only a
piano and microphone to create
the music of an entire orchestra.
Wind's varied program also
included a juggling act.

Debaters
For State
The Ashland High School de
bate team won first-place hon
ors in the debate competitions
held at Phoenix High School,
March 18.
The Ashland team beat Med
ford High School with a first
place gain in the A division of
Oxford debate. Ginny Lawrence
and Curtis White both won
honors for the locals in that
competition.
Lisa Tumbleson won third
place in the Lincoln-Douglas
debate for the team, as first and
second places went to the
Medford team. Lisa was chosen
to be an alternate in a state
tournament which is to be held
in Corvallis, April 13 through
15.
In the B division of Oxford
debate, Phoenix won first place

tion and learn where to look for
information for their occupa
tional reports.

tition. Besides the Ashland High
School debate team, the Phoe
nix, St. Mary's, Medford High,
Crater High, Grants Pass, and
Eagle Point teams also com
peted. District competition for the
individual events will be held
in Phoenix on March 31 and
April 1. First and second place
winners in each event will qual
ify for the state contest.
