Basketball
Concludes
Ashland High School's var
sity, junior varsity, and sopho
more basketball teams have all
concluded their seasons.
'1 he varsity ended up the sea
son in the cellar with a 1 19
conference mark, and 3 19 for
total season record.
Leading Scorer
Still leading the team's scor
ing was John Mitchell with 221
points. Joey Williamson regained
second place from Gene Willis
by totaling 209 to 188 for Willis.
Finishing out the team's top
five scorers are Jay Fischer and
Sonny Sixkiller with 108 and
75 respectively.
In the last four games of the
season, Williamson tallied 47
points to lead the scoring.
Mitchell followed with 39. Mitch
ell scored one more field goal
than Williamson, 1615, but
trailed on free throws 17-7.
Sophs Win
The sophomore team finished
the season well by winning two
of their last four games. They
Skimmed by Grants Pass, 37 36,
and beat Eagle Point 47 43.
The sophomores lost to Med
ford, 78 38, and were beaten by
Crater. 45 34. Ken Dickerson
was the team's high point scorer
with 105.
The junior varsity was un
able to pull any wins at the end
of the season. They dropped the
last four games to Medford 62
50. Grants Pass 5643. Roseburg
61: 36. and to Crater 45 36. Craig
liotts was this year's high scorer
with 203 points.
ATHLETE OF
Cullop
Larry Cullop. senior, was cho
sen Athlete of the Month for
the month of March for his
participation in wrestling, both
during the regular season and
at the State Wrestling Tourna
ment at Corvallis.
Cullop has compiled a season
record of 18 wins, two losses,
and one tie. At the State Tour
nament, Larry failed to place in
the point division, even though
he pinned his first man from
Corvallis.
Larry is a member of De
Molay and of the Lettermcn's
Club. He has lettered three
years in wrestling and two years
in football.
Cullop received the "Best
Defensive Player Award" in
football for his fine defensive
efforts at the guard position.
Larry tips the scales at 155
pounds and stands at five feet
seven inches tall. His favorite
sports are football, wTestling
and track. He participates in

Spring Sports Organized
The Ashland High School
spring sports, track, golf, tennis
and baseball are underway, with
the coaches looking forward to
successful seasons.
This year's track team has set
a record for turnouts with ap
proximately 50 members at the
present time.
Good Material
Mr. Buck, assistant coach, ex
pects the team to improve in all
divisions of track because, as
he says, "We have good shot

Cullop's only hobby is shooting

and tacos were listed as Larry's
favorite foods.

putters, hurdlers, javelin and
discus throwers, pole vaulters,
broad jump and high jumpers,
and our short and long distance
runners. With as much depth
as this we should have a good
season."
The team is composed mainly
of sophomores, with a few jun
iors, and only nine seniors. The
coaches feel, however, "that de
spite the few seniors and jun
iors, we are not completely in
experienced." The first track meet of the
season will be April 1 at SOC
for the Cal Ore Relays at 1 p.m.
Golf Begins
The golf team will begin its
season with a three-way match
with Medford ahd Grants Pass
on March 31 at Ashland's Oak
Knoll Golf Club.

Teams Challenge
Skiers At Meets
The Ashland High ski team
has tried hard in their first sea
son of competition. Coach Locke
entered the team as a junior
varsity team in the South Eu
gene Invitational. In the Ash
land Medford Invitational, he
entered a girls' varsity team and
a junior varsity team.
The South Eugene Invitational
was held March 4 at HooDoo.
The team finished sixth out of
seven JV teams competing, with
a team time of 3:45. Chris Hald
had the fastest time of 1:02.3.
Chris Wiley was next with a
1:14.7 and Suzi Cope finished
with a 1:23 6. Renee Dreiszus
and Roger Wigen also competed.
Renee did not finish and Wigen
was disqualified for starting a
second too soon. The fastest JV
with the help of his six return
ing lettermen who are: seniors,
Scott Weaver and Dave Work;
juniors, Bill Kuhlwein, Stee
Roberts and John Zupan; and
Jim Work is the only sophomore
who is a returner.
New Coach
Twenty-six boys turned out
this season for baseball. Under
the authority of a new baseball
coach, Mr. John Butler, the
team played their first game
March 22 against Medford here
at Ashland.
Mr. Butler will be assisted bj
Mr. John Barlow in his coach
ing duties. Coach Butler is in
his sixth year of coaching base
ball, having coached it for five
years at Pillaser, Minnesota.
When asked what he thought
the team was like, Coach Butler
stated, "A young team but they
should win quite a few games."

March 11 an Invitational was
held on Mt. Ashland planned
by Lance Locke and Medford's
ski coach, Dennis Dedrick. Ten
teams were invited to attend
Besides Ashland and Medford
Bend, Churchill, Hillsboro
Lakeview, Sheldon, South Eu
gene, Modoc, and Mt. Shasta ac
cepted the invitations.
Neither Ashland team had
enough qualifying times to
place. Renee and Chris Wiley
were the only ones to make
times on the girls' team. They
both fell. Chris's time was 2:00 6
and Renee's was 2:14 7. Suzi and
Betsy Cope both had problems
with their bindings and did not
finish. Kris Keil got disqualified
for missing a gate.
The JV team had three racers
They were Wigen, Hald, and
Robert Williamson. Hald had
the fastest Ashland time again
with 1:32. Wigen had 1:38.2 and
Williamson did not finish.
