Wrestling Over, State Gets Two Last weekend the Ashland High wrestling team finished a fair season by taking fifth at the District meet. This weekend, Jerry Sessions and Larry Cullop, because of their performances at the Dis trict meet, earned berths in the State Wrestling Meet. They will wrestle at Corvallis today and tomorrow. Coach Mobley feels that both have an excellent chance to capture honors in their weight classes. During the regular season, the team won three and lost ten matches. Jerry Sessions and Larry Cullop had the best sea sons, Sessions losing one by for feit and Cullop losing one by de cision and one by pin. Other Bears with good records include Tim Durbin, Tim Fisher, Alan Engstrom, Gary Hooper, and Tim Jones. The AHS matmen beat the Eagle Point wrestlers, 34-21, in the first match of the season. The Bears for the rest of the season, dropped two matches to Medford, 19 31 and 14-38, two matches to Grants Pass, 20-27 and 344, two to Klamath Falls, 15 40 and 846. They also lost one to the Roseburg Indians, 18-33. The two closest losses came against the Eagle Point Eagles and the Crater Comets, 22-25 and 22 24. In the two area tourneys, one held in Medford and one in North Bend, the Grizzlies took third in both meets. Sessions, Cullop, Fisher, and Durbin showed the best wrestling at these tourneys. Following the close of the season, the team traveled to Klamath Falls for the District Wrestling Match. The only first was Jerry Sessions at 130 lbs. John Mitchell was second high scorer with 10 counters and Sophomores, JVs Play Top Teams The Ashland High junior var sity and sophomore basketball teams have encountered ex tremely rough conference com petition this year. Both teams have been unable to win since late January, when the last re port was made. The JVs came close to Crater twice, losing to them by only eight points both times, 47-55 and 30-38. Terry Brutscher, Craig Botts, and Roger Boyce have sparked the team in their recent games, scoring heavily each game. Other JV scores are: Roseburg 3649, Grants Pass 35-68, and Klamath Falls 51-70. The sophomore team has also been up against stiff competi tion. Their best recent game was against Grants Pass when Ken Dickerson scored 24 points. The Bears lost by 10 points, 7888. Other scores are: Med ford 55-71, Roseburg 3145, and Crater 30-51. WILLIS WILL PLAY AS SHRINE FULLBACK Ashland High School's Gene Willis was recently se lected to play the fullback position in the 20th annual Shrine Football Game. The State team, meeting the Port land Metros Aug. 20 in Port land, is coached by South Salem's Marv Heater and as sisted by Medford's Fred Spiegelburg. Ashland Ashlond Joey Williamson was next with seven. Willis was the best free throw shooter with four of five for 80 percent. He also hemped five of nine field goals for a 55 Vi per cent completion average. Quick Lead The Grizzlies jumped out to a quick lead and were never head ed once during the game. The team displayed a brilliant offense by canning 17 of 43 bukets and nine out of 15 free tosses. The Bears led at all quarter breaks by scores of 14-7, 24-17 and 31-27. Mitchell is still the leading scorer for the team with 182 points. Willis took second place from Williamson by compiling 167 points to Williamson's 162. All three players are in the top 18 conference scorers, ranking tenth, twelfth and fourteenth respectively. Jay Fischer with 96 and Sonny Sixkiller with 63 round out the top five scorers. ATHLETE OF Sessions Athlete of the Month for the month of February goes to Jerry Sessions for his fine par ticipation and record in wrest ling. He has compiled a 16-1 win-loss record this season. As of Feb. 18, Sessions has gathered 12 decisions and four pins for the highest total of team points with 56. His only loss was a forfeit to Klamath Falls in the first meeting of the two teams. Jerry felt his best perform ance of the year was against the Crater Comets the second time when he decisioned his oppo nent 13-1. Sessions is a three-year letter man in wrestling and a two year man in football. He has been elected by his teammates, twice in a row, as most valuable wrestler. Jerry's main hobby is hunting. His favorite sports are football, wrestling, and track. In foot ball, his position is guard, and In the past six games, Willis has hit on 17 of 50 goals for 34 per cent. Williamson is the best free thrower for the team as he canned 21 out of 40 for 52'2 percent. Williamson also scored the most points in the past six games with 55, topping Mitchell by two points. Klamath Falls dropped the Bears twice, 79-42 and 106 39. Williamson and Mitchell were high scorers with eight points each the first game, and Dick Calhoun with 11 the second game. Fall Twice Medford then dumped the Grizzlies 65-51 with Williamson picking up 23 points. Mitchell picked up 17 against Grants Pass when the Cavemen stopped the Bruins 7143. The Comets burned Ashland 5947 with Sixkiller and Scott Weaver each scoring 15 points. Ashland halted the Roseburg Indians 4340 behind Willis' 14 points.
