The three plays are "The Ugly Duckling" by A. A. Milne, "Sorry, Wrong Number" Ashland, Crater Bands Perform Ashland Hieh gymnasium was the scene of a combined band concert presented by Crater and Ashland High schools Feb. 23. The program for the concert was publicized as the "Battle of the Bands." The Ashland High Varsity Band, under the direc tion of Mr. Warren Moore played the selections, "Days of Glory," a march by Cacauas; "Prelude and Fugue in G Mi nor," John Sebestian Bach; and an Al Hirt medley, with Mike Glidewell as trumpet soloist Crater Program The Crater High Symphonic Band with Mr. Scott Philip con ducting presented "Toccata and Fugue" by Eberlin; "Blow Over ture in B Flat," Giovanni Pa vanne, Morton Gould; "The Ma tador," A. Young, and "Concert March" by Clifton Williams. Ashland's Symphonic Band, Mr. Raoul Maddox, director, per formed a march by Steven Fos ter; "Fanfare and Allegro Clif fiton" by Williams; and a Mexi can dance by Terig Tucci. The combined bands then, under the direction of Mr. Da vid France, AHS student teach er, closed the program with a G. H. Huffine march. The king, played by Chris Houghton, and the queen, play ed by Jan Gray, are trying to marry off their daughter, Ca milla, played by Vickie Parker. The Chancellor, played by Kent Brostad, is trying to help. The Plot It is decided that Camilla's maid, Dulcibella, played by Lu Juana Ferreira, will meet Prince Simon, played by Doug Kirby, in Camilla's place because no body thinks the princess is pretty. The prince, being shy, decides to send his attendant, Students Three Ashland High School students have recently been recognized for outstanding con tribution to the school. Cathy Phelps, Craig Korthase, and Dian Demo have each been hon ored with separate awards. Cathy was named Girl of the Term by the Business and Pro fessional Women's Club. She was chosen on the basis of her service and activities at Ashland High School. Many Activities During her sophomore year, Cathy attended Sheldon High School in Eugene until March, when she moved back to Ash land. She was active in GRA. In her junior year Cathy was the district representative to the state GRA convention. She was also an American Field Service finalist, and spent the summer in Turkey. The second play, "Marriage Proposal," is a farce. Ivan Vas siliyitch, played by Dave Work, is a young man who wants to marry Natalia Stepanovitch, played by Susan Beecher. Ivan first asks Natalia's father, play ed by Doug Kirby, if he can marry his daughter. Ivan then proceeds with an at tempt to propose. He approaches Natalia in the wrong way and an argumenti s the result. Third Play The third play, "Sorry, Wrong Number," is being put on in a Recognized For also became a member of Na tional Honor Society in her jun ior year. Now a senior, she is president of AFS, vice-president of GRA, and is active in school activities. Cathy will receive the rotat ing pin from the last Girl of the Term and is now eligible to be chosen Girl of the Year. Council Names Korthase Craig Korthase was chosen by the student council as Boy of the Month for January. He was nominated by the stu dent council for his efforts on the basketball squad and his outstanding work on the Boy of the Month committee. In his work as chairman of the Boy of the Month committee this year, Craig has helped to select boys who have done ex ceptional work in some phase of school activities during that month. The student council then votes among the candidates. Ashland's debate team cap tured the Grand Sweepstakes and Junior Division Sweep stakes trophies at the Linfield Debate Tournament. Ashland placed four debate teams and 12 individual speak ers in the finals. Twelve hun dred students from 78 Oregon schools attended the 35th an nual tournament Debate Honors Cathy Phelps and Lisa Tum bleson placed first in senior women's debate with a string of seven victories. The junior women's team of Kathy Hill and Janie Smith placed first above the other 55 teams entered. Two Ashland teams tied for ! second in junior men's debate. ! Lon Gossage and Dave Galati tied the four-man team of Gor don Hester, Jeff McCoIlum, Su-' sie Rifle and Kris Keil. Individual Victories Impromptu speakers Cathy Phelps, Kathy Hill and Lon Gossage placed first, second, and third, respectively, in their di visions. Ginny Lawrence won the first place trophy in the senior wo men's division of extempora neous speaking. Curtis White placed third in the senior men's division of this event Extem poraneous topics covered the world in general. Susie Riffe and Jeff McCoIlum placed second in junior women's and junior men's salesmanship. Susie and Jeff sold bugging de vices and spot remover. Ginny Lawrence made the finals in salesmanship by selling power air cleaners. Interview winners included Mike Lewis and Kris Keil with second and third places. Mike interviewed for the position of surrealistic atmosphere, which is a distortion through the mind of the protagonist, who is Mrs. Stevenson, played by Moya San der. She overhears a murder being plotted by two men, play ed by Mike Pollard and Steve Buckelew, and doesn't realize it is her own. She tries to get someone to do something, but no one will listen. Not the telephone opera tors, played by Enid Langer, Marilyn Thomas, Renee Drei szus, Heather Edmonds, Debbie Dillion, and Teri Spence, or the police sergeant, played by Kent Brostad, or the hospital attend ant, played by Marilyn Miller. Craig has also participated and has done a fine job on the bas ketball squad this year. Active Athlete Other activities that Craig participates in this year include Letterman's Club. He has let tered in football for two years and has lettered once in basket ball. Craig is also a member of student council. Outside of school, Craig is vice-president of the Jackson County Youth Coun cil and Master Councilor of De Molay. He lists jeep riding, hunting, fishing, and water ski ing as his favorite hobbies. Demo Selected Dian was named Citizen of the Six-Weeks by the Student Council. Dian was chosen because of her work as chairman of the toy drive sponsored by the Student Council in conjunction with the Christmas toy drive of the Ash land Fire Department. The toys that were collected were dis bodyguard while Kris was a ski instructor. Jack Davis was a finalist in oration. Jack's oration topic dealt with individual freedom and the free press. Chris Houghton tied for third place in after dinner speaking. Chris's after-dinner topic was dirt as a contemporary hero. The victory marked the sec ond time in three years that Ashland has captured the Sweepstakes Cup. Debate Coach Herb Lewis re ported that the team is now working for the district and state meets coming up. Grizzlies 65-51 with Williamson picking up 23 points. Mitchell picked up 17 against Grants Pass when the Cavemen stopped the Bruins 7143. The Comets burned Ashland 59-47 with Sixkiller and Scott Weaver each scoring 15 points. Ashland halted the Roseburg Indians 43-40 behind Willis' 14 points. THE MONTH Selected his event in track is the hurdles. Sessions stands at an even five foot six and weighs in at 130 pounds. His favorite foods are chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, and apple pie. PROJECT PLANNED FOR RESCUE UNIT The Ashland High School student council will soon be gin an all-school project to raise money for equipment which will be given to the Ashland Fire Department's new rescue unit. It has not yet been decided what will be purchased. All AHS students are urged to take part in the money making project. Service tributed to the Ashland com munity. Dian is also a member of stu dent council and is active in the Junior class. Lynda RifTe, chairman of the Citizen of the Six-Weeks com mittee, said that students are chosen for their service to the school. She further said that since there are already many honors for boys such as Boy of the Month and Athlete of the Month, students chosen are usually girls. Committee Members Other members of the Citizen of Six-Weeks Committee are Ginny Lawrence, Jack Farmer, Michele Roberts, Todd Merri man, Lavon Phelps, and Lon Gossage.
