Several Ashland High School
organizations devote their time
almost exclusively to the pro
motion of school spirit Among
these are the rally squads,
Grizzettes, Flag Girls, the Grizz
ly marching band, and the ma
jorettes. Also adding to school
spirit is the traditional grizzly
bear.
The rally squads are elected
after tryouts each spring. The
high school elects eight varsity
yell squad members and the in
coming sophomore class elects
four junior varsity yell leaders.
The 196667 varsity rally queen
is senior Chris Wiley. Chris is
assisted by seniors Oanis Conk
lin, LuJuana Ferreira, Carolyn
Hassell, and Moya Sander, and
juniors Pam Howard and Anne
Schweibert.
JV Rally
Sophomores Marlene Bohn,
DeAnna Greene, Heidi Hooper,
and Lavon Phelps make up the
junior varsity yell squad. This
squad is responsible for leading
yells at both junior varsity and
sophomore games.
Besides leading yells at var

the year, both rally squads also

FOOTBALL SEASON
SUPPORT THE GRIZZLIES
plan skits to help promote
school spirit at pep assemblies.
Each summer the varsity cheer
leaders attend a workshop at
Lewis and Clark College. They
learn new ideas for promoting
spirit by meeting girls from
throughout Oregon.
Beginning its third year as a
promoter of school spirit is
Ashland High School's pep
club, the Grizzettes. Led by
president Paula Hoffman and
advisor Mrs. Hattie Converse,
the group spends many hours
and a large amount of money
attending all home games and
as many out-of-town games as
possible. Membership in Griz
zettes is open to all junior and
senior girls who have a grade
point C average and approval
by the advisor and dean of
girls.
FUg Girls
Ashland High School's flag
girl drill team has taken on an
entirely new look this year with
the purchase of new uniforms
and the use of multi-colored
flags.

more formal for membership in
this year's group than in pre

vious years. Flag Girls have al
most doubled their membership.
A new system of leadership has
also been put into effect with
three leaders instead of the
usual one. Jodi Tyler, who has
been a flag girl for the past
two years, is head flag girl.
Senior Nicki Benbrook and
junior Vickie Dcdrick are as
sistants. The group's advisor is
Miss Maureen Smith.
Majorettes
Majorettes Julie Cox and Deb
bie Evans, both seniors, have
also added sparkle to pep as
semblies and halftime shows
this year. Their routines include
those involving the use of floral
shields, two batons, and lighted
batons. The majorettes also
represent AHS at many out-of-town
performances with the
Grizzly marching band.
The famous grizzly bear's
faithful appearance at athletic
events has revived an old
AHS custom. This year jun
iors Harvey Yordy and Gerald
Gunter alternately wear the
disguise that brings the real
spirit of the grizzly bear back
again to AHS.

than last year, according to Mr.
Roger Haugen, librarian.
This year the library has sub
scriptions to 69 magazines com
pared to 49 last year. Three
magazines that boys might be
interested in are: "Car Craft,"
"Wood Working Digest'," and
"Sporting News." Of these new
magazines there are also two
popular ones, "Ingenue" and
"Today's Secretary" that should
be of interest to the girls. These
magazines will soon be arriving
at the school library.
The book budget is larger
than it has been in previous--,
years so the library has been
able to buy many new paper
back books. Every month new
books are added to this collec
tion of fine fiction.
