    Grizzlies
Upended
The Ashland High Grizzlies
were beaten by arch rival Med
ford 41-7, and by the Albany
Bulldogs 34-14, after maintain
ing a 3-1 record in the early
season.
The Tornado could only score
six points in the first half
against the stalwart defensive
effort of the squad. Ashland
was unable to score.
Ashland Scores
In the final quarter of play,
Ashland's hard-running tail
back, Mike Krug, plunged
through the middle of the Med
ford line to score the only points
for the Bruins. Waddell kicked
the extra point. By the final
quarter the out-manned and
out-weighed Grizzlies became
worn down, allowing the Tor
nado scores.
The tenth ranked Albany
Bulldogs bit the Bears in a
non-conference tussle 34-14.
Half-time Situation
The half-time score of 21-7
was accounted for by three Al
bany scores and one Bruin goal.
A 13 play series highlighted by
a 26-yard pass to Williamson set
up the first goal for the Bears.
Willis carried the ball in from
one yard out. Waddell's extra
point was good.
Albany scored twice in the
third quarter, but in the last
stanza the Grzzly defense held
the Hounds scoreless.
Willis sparked the Ashland
offense in the last quarter with
a 15-play scoring drive.
ATHLETE OF
Willis Top Back
Senior Gene "Tex" Willis was
chosen Athlete of the Month
for October by the Rogue News
sports department, and by the
football coaches. Willis was
chosen for his outstanding
efforts as quarterback.
As of October 14, Willis had
completed 71 of 185 passes for
a total of 929 yards. This gave
him a little better than a 13.1
yard average for each pass. His
passing had accounted for eight
touchdowns out of 17. Willis has
also scored seven tallies him
self, leaving only two in which
he wasn't connected directly.
Willis also performed well
against Grants Pass, tossing one
TD pass and running for the
other two scores.
The Letterman Club member
has set school records in the
discus with a record-breaking
toss of 170 ft., in the shot put,
and in the relay. Willis likes to
participate in football and
basketball, and track. He has
lettered three years in football
and track, and has played two
years in basketball.

Thinclads Sport 2-7 Record
This year the Ashland High
cross country team has had nine
meets, against Crater, Rose
burg, Medford, Klamath Falls,
and Grants Pass. Their record
for the meets are two wins,
seven losses for the season, with
only Roseburg left to be met.
The opening meet of the sea
son against Crater, on Septem
ber 22, gave the Bruin runners
their first victory, 17-39. Chris
Herndobler took first in this
match.

GENE WILLIS, Athlete of
the Month for October, dis
plays the running ability
which, combined with his
passing threat, has made him
one of the top ranked prep
quarterbacks in the state.

The Bears dropped the next
four meets to Grants Pass, Med
ford, Klamath Falls, and Rose
burg. With the exception of the
Roseburg meet, the Bears failed
to place anyone in the lop five
runners.
In the Roseburg meet, held
in Ashland on October 6, junior
Dick Boulton ran third, 12 sec
onds behind Roscburg's first
place runner Jan Riggs. Terry
Neuenschwander ran fourth, 30
seconds behind Boulton for
AHS's only placers.
Second Half Meets
To start the second half of
the season, the Grizzlies again
beat the Crater runners. Terry
Neuenschwander, a senior, took
first place honors. Mike Lynch
was second, six seconds behind

Juniod Varsity football squad
edged out the Roseburg Indians
1914, but dropped a 380 de
cision to the Grants Pass Cave
men. The Grizzly eleven came from
behind against Roseburg to
overcome a 7 6 half time score.
Roseburg scored in the third
quarter, but the Bears roared
back to close the gap. Sonny

A rejuvenated band of Ash
land High Grizzlies stunned the
favored Grants Pass Cavemen
20-13, in a hard hitting contest
last Friday night at Grants
Pass.
The Grizzlies employed a well
balanced attack and a sharp de
fensive performance to thrash
the Cavemen.
Quarterback Gene "Tex" Wil
lis completed 10 of only 16
passes thrown, one good for a
spectacular 20-yard touchdown
to Joey Williamson.
On the ground Mike Krug
and Willis teamed up to gain
valuable yardage and to keep
control of the ball.
Krug carried the ball 20
times for 61 yards and played
a standout game on defense.
Statistically the game was as
close as the score indicated.
Ashland picked up a total of
266 yards and nine first downs
to 231 yards and 10 first downs
for Grants Pass.
The Grizzlies gained 135
yards through the air good for
one touchdown, and 131 yards
rushing tallying two touch
downs.
98yard pass-run and the win
ning tally for Ashland. John
Perry's extra point was good.
The next week a well-balanced
Grants Pass attack shut out the
Bruins.
