Chiefs Upset In Conference Play
The Ashland High varsity won
their third in a row by dump
ing the Hoseburg Indians 27 22
for their first conference game
of the season.
Kven though Ashland domi
nated the statistics, it took one
of the most spectacular fourth
quarters in Ashland history for
the team to come roaring from
behind for the decision. It was
the Willis to Williamson passing
combination, however, that
tipped the game in favor of the
Hears.
The scrambling quarterback
hit on 11 of 15 passes, most of
them to his favorite end Joey
Williamson for three touch
downs and 120 yards.
Ashland's defense sparkled in
between touchdowns. Craig
liotts, l.onnie Slack and John
Sutton crashed the Rose-burg
line time and again to stop

First Half Tl)
The Hears scored their only
touchdown of the first half late
in the second on an end sweep
by Willis. Williamson was stun
ned as he threw the key block
on the play. A fumbled pass
from center made the kick fail.
Karly in the third quarter of
play, Willis scored on a seven
yard pass play. The second
touchdown in the last stanza
came on an eight yard pass from
Willis to Williamson. The kick
was good, and the Bruins tied
Roseburg 20 20.
Winning Touchdown
Late in the middle of the last
stanza, the Bears scored what
turned out to be the decisive
touchdown, as the kick split the
uprights it was 27 20. With just
18 seconds left on the score
board, Willis let Roseburg have
spring, as their representative.
The Burelson's school board
participated in three television
style shows, in-store modeling,
and radio advertising. An un
usual activity of the board was
window modeling, in which
girls posed in the windows as
mannequins, turning around as
window shoppers watched.
Barbara Hormel, Kathy O'
Harra. and Linda Ride were se
lected for the La Pointe's fash
ion board. The main activity of
members, besides informal mod
eling in the store, were back-to-school
style shows featuring
the newest fall designs.

Spartans
Ashland High School's foot
ball express ran into a road
block in Red Bluff when they
were stilled 16-0 for their first
loss of the season. The loss
leaves them with a three win
and one loss record as of Sep
tember 30.
Quarterback Willis, who pre
viously led the Grizzlies to a
3 0 season, found himself facing
Spartans all night and couldn't
get the offense moving.
Willis Hit
Willis was brought down
many times before he could get
his touted passing arm cocked,
and when he did get to throw
he had to pass on the dead run.
Kor the evening, he hit on
only six of 21 attempts, many
of those were for only short
gains.

failed to connect on the only
two passes it threw, and fell
short as the time ran out on the
clock.

Passing Attack Dumps Celts
The Ashland High foolball
team led by the new combina
tion of Tex Willis and Joey
Williamson started out their
season with a 35 6 stomping of
the Lebanon Warriors.
Willis tossed two touchdowns
to Williamson, and ran three
more across the line himself.
The stingy di fen.-c allowed only
four first downs during the
night. It also gave Lebanon only
a negative four yards for their
total offense.

The Bruins started off as they
have done previously. The small
defensive unit contained the
Spartans' running and passing
attack during the opening
quarter.
Willis started moving the
team downfield with a series of
passes and running plays. The
drive ground to a halt deep in
Red Bluff territory on a fumble.
Spartans Score
After a long game of give and
take, the Spartans' halfback,
Danny Redden scored on a 26
yard gainer.
Once again Ashland started
another drive deep into Spartan
country, and once more it was
stopped. This time a Willis to
Williamson pass was picked off.
Haltime left the score 7 0 and
the Hears had hopes of making
another of their spectacular
comebacks. However, the second
half was all Red Bluff.
The Spartans kept Ash
land deep in the hole with long
punts, and also broke the Ash
land defensive line to let Red
den scamper through for long
gains.
The halfback, who runs like
Nary Celtics as they opened up
their home season by a score
of 346. They were again led
by the duo of Willis and Wil
liamson. John Mitchell also
contributed to the victory.
Willis tossed two touchdown
passes to his favorite end Joey
Williamson, and handed off to
tailback Lon Gossage for an
other score. Willis also ran for
the other two scores.
The defense also did another
outstanding job in the game.
Key defensive plays added to
the Celtics' troubles.

Redden scored Red Bluff's
second touchdown during the
third period of play, enabling
the Sp.irtans to control the ball
most of the second half.
Ashland's battered defense
had to make several courageous
stands to keep the overpower
ing Spartans from running the
score higher.
The big difference in the
game was the breakdown in
Ashland's pass protection. Willis
had to go to air when the
Bruins' running game was
snuffed out every time they
tried.
The huge Sparts had little
trouble going through the
Grizzly defenders to nail Willis
for large losses.
The Spartans are one of the
top teams in northern Califor
nia, and have lost only five
games in the past eight years.
