These four members of the girls' track team represented Ash
land at the recent state meet in Springfield. They are (1. to r.)

team points.
Voth Sparks Girls
To State 4th Place
Ashland High School girls
earned fourth place at the re
cent state track meet in Spring
field, earning 31 points.
Most of Ashland's points
were gained by Lyla Voth, who
received two first places and a
second place. Lyla exceeded na
tional records in the discus and
shot put. She hurled the discus
136 ft. 3 in. and put the shot
42 ft. 11 'i in. for her state
mark which beat the national
bests for the Division of Wo
men's and Girls' Sports under
the American Association for
Health, Physical Education, and
Recreation. Lyla also placed
second in the javelin with a
toss of 133 ft. 2 in.
Judy Jameson also earned
points for Ashland. She placed "
fifth in the 220, with a time of
26.4, and sixth in the 100 in a
time of 12.05.
A total of 412 girls represent
ing 91 schools from throughout
the state competed in the state
meet. Only those girls who
qualified in their districts were
allowed to compete.
In the local district track
meet, four girls qualified for
the State Meet and five new
school records were set
Qualifying for state were:
Lyla Voth, first javelin, shot
put, discus; Judy Jameson,
second 220 yard run, third 100
yard dash; Debby McMonigal,
qualifying time for hurdles.
New school records set were:
Lyla Voth, shot put 39'10",
discus 136'5"; Carlista Holland,
440 yard run 66 seconds; Judy
Jameson, 220 yard run 27.5;
Maria Anderson, 880 yard run
2 minutes 47.7 seconds.
The State Tournament took
place at Springfield, Saturday,
May 14.
New Ilead
Five Ashland girl track
members competed in the
Strawberry City All-Comers
meet at Lebanon April 23.
Judy Jameson took first in
the high jump, breaking the old
school record with a jump of
4'7". She also placed second in
the 100 yard dash.
Debby McMonigal placed
fifth in the hurdles with Susan
Rifle placing sixth in the long
jump and Betty Mayo placing
sixth in the 880.
Lyla Voth placed first in the
javelin, second in the shot put,
and third in the discus. Be
cause of her excellent perform
ance, she was awarded a plaque
naming her the outstanding
field event performer.
The track team was compet
ing against top tracksters and
did a tremendous job in repre
senting our school.
AHS Baseball Nine Loses
Twice To Crater Prepsters
The Ashland High School
baseball team dropped a double
header to Crater 12-0 the first
game, and 9-3 the second game.
This brings their win and loss
record to 3 and 10 since the
last edition of the paper.
The best hitter for the Grizz
lies in the first game was Mike
Schoonover who was two for

High School Grizzly tracksters
placed second in a tri-meet held
in Ashland last Friday.
Klamath Falls prepsters won
the meet, accumulating 86
points. Ashland tallied 55
counters while Crater took last,
scoring 21 points.

district crown, Ashland High's
Grizzly racket squad ended its
most successful season in the
history of the team last week.
After scoring four wins in a
row at the district tourney last
weekend, Leask will be com
peting for the state title in Eu
gene this weekend.
The quintet, headed by the
New Zealander's 7-1 conference
record and his 11-3 season
mark, ended the season with an
8-6 record and a 4-6 conference
mark. The number of victories
is more than all the previous
racket quintets have garnered
in the history of AHS tennis.

Prospect.
May 7, a 7-1 and 7-2 double
header to Medford.
May 11, a 19-1 and 17-1
double-header to Klamath Falls.
May 12, an 11-6 loss to Eagle
Point.
May 14, a 12-0 and 9-3 double
header to Crater.

Besides Springer's 13-3 vault,
Tim Voth won the javelin, Tex
Willis victored in the discus,
John Myers won the 440, and
Roger Goddard victored in both
the low and high hurdles.

At the district tourney, Ash
land's team ended in third po
sition as they did in conference
standings. Klamath topped the
circuit and the tourney with an
8-0 record and 30 team points.
Medford followed in both cate
gories with a 6-2 mark and 20
points. Ashland had 16 points
followed by Grants Pass with
15 points and a 26 record.
Eagle Point tallied three dis
trict tourney cantos, but didn't
play conference teams, while
Crater had an 0-8 mark and no
points.
Leask provided 10 of the
team's counters while Jack
Ragan gave Ashland three as
did the doubles duo of Ken
Clark and Doug Kirby.
Also entered in the tourney
was Jerry Bevens in singles
and John Kaegi and Craig
Kirby and Kent Brostad and
Gary Prickett in doubles. Bev
ens won one and was eliminated
by last year's champion who
took third this year, Ken My
ers of Medford. The second
AHS doubles team met the
third rated doubles men from
Klamath Falls in the " initial
round and were eliminated as
were the third doubles duo.
Other winners included Tom
and Terry Cole of Klamath in

Skeen of Klamath was second
in singles while Mike Offord
and Russ Ferguson of Medford
placed second in doubles action

Ashland's triumphant net
club included seven members
during the year. Leask, Ragan,
Bevens, Clark, the Kirby
brothers and Kaegi made up
the team.
Ashland's victories were over
Grants Pass and Crater twice in
conference action. Southern
Oregon College JV's twice.
Eagle Point, and North Bend.
The quint lost to Medford, Kla
math and Roseburg twice each.
Fufure Ski Team
Ashland High is planning a
ski team for next winter. The
team will receive funds from
the Athletic Department just
like the football, basketball and
baseball teams. Besides having
their equipment furnished, the
team members will get free ski
lift tickets to practice their
skiing.

respectively while Greg Bowles
took third in the shot put, Dick
Boulton placed third in the 880
and Larry Rowley was third in
the 220. Fourth places included
Bill Pettit in the 100, Lonny
Slack in the long jump, Boulton
in the 220 and Rowley in the
880. Ashland took second in the
relay.
Taking firsts for Klamath
were Gates in the 100, 200 and
broadjump, Lewis in the mile,
Petersteiner in the highjump.
Metier in the 880 and Whitlock
in the two-mile run. Klamath
won the relay. Molloy of Crater
won the shot put
A review of these setting rec
ords during the season shows
Voth erasing the old javelin
mark in the Cal-Ore, Hayward
and Rotary, and Rogue Relays;
and Willis with a discus mark.
Voth's best throw was 216 while
Willis' was 170-0 Vi.
The track team will travel to
Grants Pass tomorrow for the
district meet at 1 p.m.

Ashland High School lost its
last golf match of the season,
bringing her season record to
two wins and six losses.
Ashland's two victories were
scored over Crater April 12,
with a 14-1 score, and again
April 22 with another 14-1
score.
Losses for Ashland were:
