Oflicers of the club are: presi dent, Sally Loc; vice-president, Bernard Hamm; secretary, Cathy Hawk; treasurer, Carol Winner; and reporter, Amy Helm. The club has been selling Continental Breakfast since Oc tober of this year. They hope to Ginny Lawrence Gains Journalism Study Scholarship Ginny Lawrence, Ashland High School junior, has recently been awarded a scholarship to attend a journalistic study ses sion this summer. Ginny was awarded a $200 scholarship from the University of Kansas to attend the Mid western Music and Art Camp. Ginny will be participating in the Journalish Division of the camp. During the six-week ses sion, the group will study all ph pases of journalism, includ ing story writing, editing, and pae makeup. The journalism division will be responsible for publishing the camp newspaper. The applicants were judged on the basis of their journalism activities, their essays stating why they wanted to attend the camp, and a required letter of recommendation. S. 0. Prometheus Program Begins Its First Season Several sophomores and jun iors have been nominated for the Southern Oregon Prome theus Program this summer, an nounced Mrs. Zwick, English Department head. Two hundred students from Southern Oregon will be chosen to participate in the program for gifted students. They will be chosen not only on academic standards, but on their unique ness. Beginning on July 11, the project will last for approxi mately six weeks, terminating on August 20. It will consist of classes, lectures and field trips to various sites in the valley. All students taking part will live in the Southern Oregon College dormitories. All ex penses are paid by sponsors of the project. The club is also selling Grizzly Guides f or 50 cents each. Grizz ly Guides include the name, address and phone number of every student at Ashland High. A snow party with Medford was held Feb. 5, and the club spon sored a rummage sale the second and ninth of April. Induction ceremonies were held December 2 and the club now has 31 members. FBLA is working on a scrap book to carry a Shakespearean theme to the state convention to be held in Corvallis May 15 and 16. Ashland is in charge of the entertainment for the convention. Bernard Hamm is a candidate for Mr. FBLA and Jackie Thompson is a candidate for state vice-president The club also hopes to send one delegate to the National FBLA Convention to be held in New Orleans in June. Ashland's FBLA organization has a fine relationship with the Ashland business community. President Sally Loe states, "Through the club, one can gaia greater understanding of the part business plays in the world and in the community." Pam Lewis Wins Tickets Pam Lewis, Ashland High School senior, recently won two tickets to the opera "Madame Butterfly" at the Oriental Theatre in Portland. Pam applied for the tickets by writing a letter telling her rea sons for wanting to go and turn ing it in to her counselor. Pam wrote that she would like to go because she is interested in music and is planning on ma joring in music in college. She ended her letter by thanking the foundation for giving so many students the opportunity io witness a real opera. Although Madame Butterfly was sung in Italian, Pam said she enjoyed the performance. Pam had her choice between Madame Butterfly and Carmen, and chose Madame Butterfly after reading about the operas and studying the reviews. While Pam was in Portland, she also attended the opera "Cinderella" which was showing at popular prices. She preferred Cinderella because "the artists were much better and the or chestra was just tremendous." A friend from Salem accom panied Pam and used the other ticket. Pam said the experience was very enjoyable and edu cational. Besides receiving the United States National Bank Work Col lege Scholarship, Dale placed second in the Elks' Leadership Contest and third in the Elks' Most Valuable Student Contest. Dale is a member of the Let termen's Club, student council, and interclub council. He is president of the National Honor Society and attended the Able and Gifted Classes held at Southern Oregon College this year. Dale is a member of the Varsity Baseball team and pliy ed on the Varsity Football Team last fall. He is also a member of the Humanities Seminar. Dale likes serving his school. "My three years at Ashland Sen ior High School have been en joyable and rewarding." After graduation, Dale will work at the United States National Bank and attend school alternately. He hopes to attend the Univer sity of Oregon in Eugene. His scholarship wilt pay the tuition costs. a Edward Krahel Third In Contest Janet Blank, student at Eagle Point High School, was first place winner in the annual United Nations Pilgrimage Con test. Shirley McNeil, Illinois Valley High School, and Edward Krahel, Ashland High School, were second and third place winners respectively. Each February topics are as signed for the essays. This year's topic was "The Strength and Weakness of the United Na tions." The essay is supposed to contain approximately 1,00? words. The essays were col lected in early March and they were graded by a panel of three judges at that time. Seventy-two hours before the speak-off por tion of the contest, the three finalists received the topic for their speech. Cathy Phelps, district repre sentative, is planning the dis trict conference which will take place at Ashland. The awards for the members will be ordered this week. HONOR SOCIETY Is considering a trip. The place is to be decided by club members at a later date. GIRLS LEAGUE Girls League is planning a Father-Daughter Banquet April 21st. It will take place in the Junior High Cafeteria. A guest speaker and live entertainment will follow the meal. Mystery Students November 4 is the birthdate of the senior mystery girl for this issue of the Rogue News. She is 5'6" tall, has brown hair, blue-grey eyes and weighs 116 pounds. Among her favorites are swimming and steak. The senior mystery boy's fa vorite food is mutton. He is 6'2i" tall, weighs 165 pounds, - has fair hair and blue eyes. His birthday is February 29. When the mystery students were interviewed they were asked the following questions: What place would you like to visit? Is there something you would like to do that you have never done? What occupation are you going into? And what do you think of the world situation? Japan is where the mystery girl would like to visit. She would like to spend a whole summer traveling around the U.S., and she plans to go into elementary teaching. She feels that the world situation is extremely serious and that something is bound to happen soon. The mystery boy says that he would like to visit Ashland. He just wear a smile andajaiUZCIl FROM BAND The band is preparing for the annual Band Festival April 23. It is also planning a trip to Portland for an exchange con cert with Centennial High School May 14. CHORUS The chorus and orchestra concert was postponed. The group performed a concert for the student body April 8. LETTERMEN They are fixing a Hall of fame, a playday to grade school boys, a workday for the Juniors to start June, and spring initiation. AHS G"s Work As Teen Models Several junior and senior girls have been selected by Burleson's in Medford to repre sent Ashland High School as teen models. Besides participat ing in informal in-store style shows, some of the girls have participated in television style shows. AHS representatives alter nate by modeling in pairs every third or fourth Saturday. Mod els include seniors Teresa Col lier, Linda Davis, Jennifer Madison, Sandi Tison, and Cyndi Wright, and juniors Julie Cox, Barbara Hormel, and Janean Cummins. says there is something he would like to do but he did not tell us what it is. He intends to enter the commercial field and thinks that the world situation is great, if you like wars, riots and unstable .governments.
