Varsity Netters Drop Contests To GP, KF The varsity basketball squad was beaten by the Grants Pass Cavemen 80 56, and by the Kla math Falls Pelicans 73-53. The two losses give the Grizzlies a 4-11 mark in conference play. It was Randy Nelson who led the team in both games for the high scoring honors. Nelson picked up 13 points against Grants Pass, and 15 against the Pels. Joey Williamson was sec ond with 11 in both contests. The Pels were ahead all the game despite the defensive effort of Lindley, Morrill, Nel son, Williamson, and ColdwelL The Bruins end their season tomorrow night against the Black Tornado of Medford at 8:00 p.m. Ashland Hopes High For District Meet Five schools will participate in the annual district wrestling meet which will be held on March 4 and 5 at Grants Pass. Ashland, Crater, Klamath, Grants Pass, and Medford will donate two men for each weight class. The matches will begin at 1:30 Friday and Saturday and will continue through the eve nings. Admission for spectators will be one dollar for adults and 50 cents for students. Mr. Keith Mobley, wrestling coach, stated that this year's team is "much stronger and more experienced than last year's" and went on to say that he felt Ashland would "place fairly well in a lot of the lower weights." Gary Prickett, 98, Stu Hough ton, 115, John Wood, 130, and Jerry Sessions, 123, are expected to do extremely well in their Provost's Furniture RUGS -LAMPS CARPETS - DESKS Serving Ashland For Over 50 Years Lindley, Houghton Win Sports Award Kerry Lindley and Stu Hough ton were chosen by the Rogue News sports department as Ath letes of the Month for February. Kerry was chosen because of his active participation in bas ketball. As of Feb. 19, he had scored 121 points. Stu was cho sen because of his fine effort in wrestling, as he has posted a 14 wins and three loss record as of Feb. 17. Lindley is a five-foot nine inch senior who weighs in at 155 lbs. He likes to participate in basketball and football. He has played three years of basket ball and two years of football. His favorite hobby is watching television, especially his favor ite show, Batman. Kerry is an active member of Honor Society, and Letterman's Club. He lists steak, spaghetti and chocolate cream pie as his favorite foods. Stu is also a senior. He stands five feet six inches, and weighs 115 lbs. His favorite sports are cross country, wrestling, and track. He has lettered three years in wrestling and one year in cross country. Houghton's favorite topics are surfing, swimming, and gym nastics. He is a member of the Drama Club. Stu has the school honor in Milwaukie, Oregon for the Most Improved Wrestler of '64. He has placed first at the Medford Tournament, first at the Eagle Point Tourney, and second at the Henley Tournament Metrecal and Diet Pepsi are the favorite foods of this wrest ler when he wants to lose weight; and 19c hamburgers and spaghetti when he's trying to gain weight. bouts. Tim Voth, much-publicized AHS athlete, was rated as hav ing the eleventh longest javelin throw in the nation last year during the track season and through graduation of the top ten, he is rated as the top jav elin hurler in the nation as of this spring. Tim's longest heave of the prep track season last year was 2163. The top hurler in the nation, Foss Miller of Eastmont, E. Wenatchee, Wash., heaved the spear to a prep record of 232-9. Oregon athletes num bered six strong on the top eleven charts last year. Tim's nearest competititor for the honor is Ray Alexander of West Monroe, La., who tossed it 211-6. Farther Throw Later in the summer, Tim heaved the spear past his own school record and officially his longer toss in his career is 2226. Voth has thrown it far ther, though! Tim has creased the 230 foot mark during prac tice sessions during the sum mer; he hopes to set a new Bruins Drop Crater Five Behind the 12 point effort of Kerry Lindley, the varsity hoopsters came from behind to beat the Crater Comets 45-42 recently. Lindley copped high scoring honors for the squad, while Joey Williamson was second with seven. High s corers f or Crater were Branch and Burgess with 13 points each. Crater had an eight point ad vantage at halftime, 25-19. The Bears gained the lead for the first time with a little over two minutes left in the final quarter. jf. COLLEGE RICHFIELD JUNCTION OF HIGHWAY 66 & 99 "If we can't service it It can't be done" American high school record this spring. The Track and Field magazine also listed other Rogue Valley athletes who placed high in track accomplishments last season. Keith Munson ran the two mile to a school record of 9:19.4 and placed fourteenth in the nation. The top two mile was run by Mike Ryan of Wilcox, Santa Clara, Calif., in 8.57.8. Dick Fosburg of Medford high jumped eleventh highest in the nation with a leap of 6 7. The number one position is held by a senior this year, Bill McClellon of Clinton, New York City, N.Y. at 7 0. Top 300 Another publication which came out this year was the Who's Who in Oregon Hii;h School Track and Field 19G5. This magazine told the top 300 athletes in each track and field event last year. Due to lack of space the Rogue News will tell the times or distance of the top 20 AHS athletes and the event only. Tim Voth garnered the fourth best A-l javelin toss in the state last year and Keith Munson ran the second fastest two mile run. The longest throw was 228-104 while the fastest two mile was by an A-2 runner in the state tourney at 9:11.2. Roger Springer, a sophomore, pole vaulted to a new school record last year and placed 18th in the A-l ratings. His vault was twelfth at 13-0, behind War ren Logan of Grants Pass who vaulted 14-4 14. Willis 4th Gene W'illis copped fourth in A-l discus throw ratings with a heave of 165-4Vi. Tim Vollmer of Benson threw it to a high Of 183-8. Wayne Calvary and Randy Nelson made 130 low hurdles A-l top 20 ratings. Calvary was fifth with a time of 20.2 while Nelson, eighth, was 20.5. Dave Durant of Tigard ran it to a high of 19.3. The two also gained top 20 recognition in the 120 highs as Calvary was sixth with 14.9 and Nelson ninth with 15.2. Durrani of Tigard ran it first with 14.2 timing. Craig Hooper gained A-l mile run status as he trotted to the eighth fastest time at 4:24.7. Ron Byers of Grant ran it in 4:19.5 for the fastest time. 880 Placer Sixteenth place 880 yard dash honors went to Munson as he ran it in 1:59.0. Larry Black of North Eugene ran the fastest last year in 1:54.5. Others from AHS gaining recognition as top 300 athletes are listed below. In the 100 yard dash, Dave Lewis and Steve Rost were listed. Gaining 440 honors were Roger Godard and Lonny Slack. Craig Hooper placed in the 880. Ron LeBlanc, Gary Hooper, John Meyer, and Terry Neuen schwander placed in the mile. LeBlanc and Mike Starnes took two mile honors, while John Mitchell and Dick Calhoun placed in the 120 highs. Mitch ell, Jerry Sessions, and Calhoun also placed in the 180 lows. In the shot put, Greg Bowles, Wil lis, and Dennis Sorenson took honors. Gary Pennington was a javelin placer while Nelson and Calvary placed in the high jump. Voth, Nelson, and Godard placed in the broad jump. Relay Results Ashland as a team placed in the 440 relay, 880 relay, mile relay, two mile relay, and the distance relay.
