Arch Rival
Edges Bruins
The Ashland High School
Grizzly gridders lost to arch rival
Medford in the annual Homecom
ing tilt 3 0 recently.
In both the first and second
halves the Hears seemed cursed
with bad luck. They lost the ball
five times in the first half on
three fumbles and two pass inter
ceptions. After the half, the
Bruins were able to hang on to
the ball, but were hurt on two
successive roughing the kicker
penalties. The fans showed their
disapproval of the calls both
times.
Score Not Story
The Tornado went into the eon-
test with a perfect record of six
wins and no losses. They had
battled to some close final scores,
and had one eye on their upcom
ing game with the Grants Pass
Cavemen.
The Grizzlies have not beaten
the Medford squad since 1947, and
felt that they had the best chance
in years to down the Tornado.
Ashland won the pre-game toss
and elected to receive. Three
plays after the kick-off, Ross
Coldwell had a pass intercepted
and the P.iq Wind had possession
of the ball inlruin territory.
The teams batted back and
forth for the remainder of the
first quarter with the Bruins
launching one sustained drive
which moved the ball from their
own 20-yard line to Medford's 25.
On the second play after the
Bears received a punt, lady luck
frowned once more on the squad
and a fumble gave Medford pos
session on Ashland's 20-yard line.
The Big Wind smashed into the
Bear line three times but was un
able to get the score after a first
down. Bill Collins booted a 22-
yard field goal for the only score
of the evening.
Stopped Dead
Both clubs battled back and
forth for the remainder of the
first half but neither team was
able to mount a sustained drive.
The Grizzlies kickedoff for the
start of the second half and stop
ped the Big Wind dead until a
roughing the kicker penalty re
newed the drive. The Tornado
was again stopped cold, and again
a roughing the kicker penalty
gave the spark for the Medford
itcs to continue.
For the third time in the drive,
the Medford squad was forced to
punt and this time there was no
penalty.
Starting from their own 25
yard line, the Bears moved on
several good plays to the Medford
24 and then attempted to open
things up with a series of pass
plays. On fourth and 11 Coldwell
threw a last ditch attempt to split
end Kerry Lindley. The ball was
slightly overthrown and the
Bruins' attempt to "overcome"
had fallen short.
4 4
TACKLED HARD Tim Voth is being tackled hard by a host of Medford players. Tex Willis, 30, is
ready to throw a block for Voth. Medford players are Ken Martin, 60, Bill Scofield, 74, Phil Jahn, 89.
Brums Outseore Grater
19-14, Senior Week Win
CENTRAL POINT The Ash-
lond Grizzlies "rose to the occa
sion" last Friday night as they
made the second annual "senior
week" a success. The Bruins
downed the Crater Comet foot
ballers 19 13 for their first con
ference victory and fourth place
in the league.
Only a few miles away the
Medford-Grants Pass struggle
drew over 10,000 fans, limiting
the crowd at the Grizzly-Comet
game. But before a few spirited
fans, the Bears came from behind
twice to nab the victory.
For Crater the loss meant occu
pation of the league cellar for
another year. It was last year that
the Grizzlies stopped the Comets
18-0, giving Ashland third and
the Comets last.
It was the first time in 15 years
that an Ashland team had made
it two winning seasons in a row.
Ashland turned the trick in 1949
and 1950. Ashland ended the sea
son with a 5-4 record. Last year
the Bears gained a 6-3 mark.
TD Called Back
The game started with the
Bears kicking. Ashland forced
Crater to punt and started their
first drive of the night. A Tim
Voth TD was called back, then
with 52 seconds left in the quar
ter, Terry Clark hit Ron LeBlanc
with a pay-dirt aerial. Tex Willis
missed the point after and the
score read 6-0.

Both teams began battling back
and forth in the second quarter
until the Comets got a drive mov
ing late in the period. After a
roughing the kicker penalty and
face-mask infraction, Darrell
Kiger moved the ball into pay
dirt and Gerald Branch kicked
the extra point and Crater took a
7-6 half-time lead.
Late in the third quarter Ash
land again began to move the
ball. Voth put the team ahead
once again with 1:30 on the clock
on a two-yard plunge. Rick Wad-
dell's extra point boot was wide
and the board read 12-7 for
Ashland.
Get Fumble
After giving the ball back to
the Bears following the Ashland
score, the Comets picked up an
Ashland fumble on the Bruin 17
yard line. The Bruin defense held
Crater for three downs but on
fourth and 17 to go, Greg Beman
connected with Bill BuckholU.
The fullback picked up a good
block and went in for another
go-ahead score.
Willis then got the nod from
the bench to prove the Ashland
determination. The big fullback
cracked into the Comet line time
after time, making long gains with
under seven minutes left in the
game. With the ball resting on the
seven-yard line, Voth hit Kerry
Lindley with a pass for the win
ning score. Waddell toed the
point after and the score stood
at 19 13.
Klamath Pelicans
Overcome Bruins;
Fourth Bear Loss
The Ashland High School
Grizzlies dropped a 15 6 decision
to the Klamath Union Pelicans
recently. The loss evened up their
record at four wins and four
losses.
The Bears, who have not tasted
victory since its 640 rout of the
Sweet Home Huskies three weeks
ago, were again plagued with
offensive "hardening of the
arteries."
On several occasions the Grizz
lies had drives going which car
ried them deep into Pelican ter
ritory only to be bogged down
for the important yardage.
When the ground game was not
moving, the Bears took the air
and had fair success with three
out of six passes completed. But
again, the correct combination
was not to be found by the squad.
AIIS Limited
A quick look at the game sta
tistics shows some of the prob
lems which Coach John Gray and
his squad faced. The Grizzlies
were held to 31 offensive plays
while allowing the Pelicans to
run 63 plays.
Fumbles and pass interceptions
also played a big role in the Kla
math Falls victory. The Bears
were especially bothered in the
air lanes during the fourth stanza
of play.
Voth Scores
Ashland's only score of the
evening came during the first
period of action on a 26-yard run
by Tim Voth. The kick failed.
Toward the end of the opening
period, the Pelicans picked up
two points when Tex Willis was
dumped in the end zone for a
safety.
Minutes later, Klamath Falls'
quarterback Rick Brosterhous
rambled six yards for the Peli
cans' first TD. The extra point
plit the uprights and the Kla
math squad took a 9-6 lead with
them into the dressing room.
