Turning breaks into scores, the Salem gridders held off numerous Ashland attacks and tallied twice on Ashland's highly-touted de fense during the thriller. The Bruins not only lost the breaks, but lost their key men in the often-praised backfield, Tex Willis and Tim Voth. Willis suf fered a dislocated shoulder on the first play from scrimmage and Voth was side-lined for the night when he received a hip pointer in the second period. As the Rogue News went to press, it was unknown whether either would play in the Albany-Bruin clash tonight. Perrine's GARLAND, LEVIS, WHITE STAG PETER'S SHOES On the Plaza came after the Bruin defense 1 forced McNary to punt. The loose ball touched a Grizzly blocker and a Celtic gridder recovered the fumble on the Ashland 21-yard line. Eight plays later he was in for the first score. Ashland stop ped the run attempt for the point after. Two Ashland drives succumbed after the score and the first half ended 6-0 for McNary. The Bears opened the second half with a long drive, but it was scuttled near the winners' 20-yard line. A McNary fumble, however, gave Ashland possession of the ball again near mid-field and the Bruins drove to Salem's 30 where Coldwell unleashed with Ash land's only score, a long bomb to end Kerry Lindley. Voth's extra-point try went under the cross-bars and Randy Nelson kicked off for the Grizzlies in stead of first-string booter Voth. AHS pushed the stubborn Celts to the 21-yard line and were aided by a long Terry Clark carry. Coldwell hurled an aerial to Lindley, but the target was cinderthrown and on the next play Coldwell again faded back to pass and it looked like a vic torious night for Ashland after all. But contrary to Bruin hopes, a Celtic lineman hit Coldwell from behind and the six-foot quarterback fumbled. Dave Mc Atee grabbed the loose ball and sprinted 71 yards for the tie breaker and the winning score. The TD was enough to dampen Bruin spirits and make a new ball club out of McNary. The third canto ended vith the Salem eleven in front, 13-ii. In the final quarter, Ashland again started to drive, but this time a Celt interception spoiled the Bruin hopes. Ashland's de fense pushed the Celtics to the 30, but on the next play Steve Flores broke around right end for the tally.
