feet. Tex Willis took second in
the discus with a school record
throw of 165-4 V4.
While taking sixth in the mile,
Craig Hooper didn't break the
school record, but he ran the
second fastest mile ever run in
the conference. The fastest ever
ran was iby George Fullerton of
Ashland. Wayne Calvary ran
15.4 high hurdle run for a sixth
at state.

Grizzlies End Baseball
Season With Win Streak
Following a losing season,
mainly due to a lack of scoring
depth, the Ashland High thinclads
exploded at the season's end to
set new school records and take
third in the District Meet at Cen
tral Point.
Wih the help of Coach Crane
and asiltant coaches Mr. Keil
and Mr. Buck, six went to the
State Meet last Friday and Sat
urday at Corvallis.
New Records
New records were set this year
in the 880 yard run, javelin, dis
cus, two mile run, and the pole
vault. The 880 record was broken
twice within a span of two weeks.
First Craig Hooper ran a 2:00.4
to clip the old record by four-
gone 13 feet in the pole vault.
The vault breaks the old record
of Dave Barger of 12 feet 9 inches
set last year.

Winning the last two baseball
games of the year, the AHS nine
wound up with a two-game win
ning streak recently.
Ashland's initial win of the
season came during the second
game of the nightcap double
header at the White City Memor
ial Stadium. Dave Bailey, Crater,
threw a no-hitter, but with the
help of Bruin pitcher Roy Tay
lor, who hurled a two-hitter, the
AHS crew defeated the Comets
1-0.
The Bruins lost the opener 5-2
on a two-hitter by Mike Halsey.
Dave Barger allowed eight hits.
One of the Bear hits was a home
run by Terry Clark as he hit it
with Ross Coldwell on 'board to
account for Ashland's runs.
Dave Bailey's no-hitter in the
second game was shadowed when
Clark warned and via an error
and a stolen base, he made it to
third base. With two out in the
tenths of a second, and then Keith first or sccon jn theu- event, or
Munson in the St. Mary's meet
two weeks later lashed out with
a 1:59, beating Craig's record by
one and four-tenths seconds.
Gary Pennington whipped the
spear 215 feet 3'4 inches to erase
his old mark of 208 feet set last
year. An interesting fact is that
Tim Voth in his junior year is
throwing the javelin almost ex
actly the same distance that Gary
did last year. By their tosses,
Gary and Tim are currently five
and six in javelin in the state.
Gene Willis lot go a throw of
163 feet 6 inches with the discus
in the St. Mary's meet. The throw
breaks the old mark of 158 feet
and is now the sizth best throw
in state. Setting his second record
of he year, Keith Munson ran the
two mile in 9 minutes 30 seconds.
This breaks the old record of 9:38
set by Gerald Brown in 1964 and
ranks as the fifth best time in
the state. With only four weeks
of practice, Roger Springer has
equal a set standard. In the high
hurdles Wayne Calvary took a
third with a time of 14.9 seconds,
the qualifying standard. Craig
Hooper loped to a first place win
in the mile with a time of 4:30
to qualify. Running the two mile,
Keith Munson grabbed the win
with a time of 9:30 to qualify for
state. Taking the first and second
spots in the javelin, Tim Voth
and Gary Pennington will enter
the state meet. Gene Willis
qualified in the discus with
third place and a throw of 153
feet 11 inches.
Results from the state meet
will be listed elsewhere in the
paper.

Kelly Champ broke the five

The Bruins topped the season
by winning the last outing of the
season at Yreka, 10-7. AHS trailed
the Miners 5-1 and scored seven
sixth inning runs and two sev
enth inning cantos for the win.
The Bear sixth stanza saw
Terry Clark, Dave Barger and
Dale Barger load the bases via
walks and Clark scored when Bill
Berninghausen was hit by a
pitch. A sacrifice by Rich Price
scored another run, then Taylor
and Waddell singled. Ross Cold
well was hit and Dave Barger
