In Search of An Issue
In the last national election, the Republicans
had to fight the peace and prosperity of the Johnson
administration. It was said that they were "in search
of an issue" to unite themselves against the Demo
crats. Ashland High School students face a problem
similar to that of the Republicans. We are in search
of an issue to unite ourselves against a lack of en
thusiasm, lack of interest, and apathy.
"What," you say, "but we've got lots of school
spirit." But what is school spirit? Does it include
just yelling at games, doing homework, and being
quiet at assemblies. Far from it. School spirit is an
attitude. An attitude not of what can it give me, but
what can I give it. An attitude of interest: An atti
tude of wanting to help. This three pointed attitude
has been missing this year except in the field of
sports. But sports are not all of the school spirit
There now exists no common bond or feeling
among the students. Last year the students united
behind the Watusi ban; the year before, some other
issue. This year there was widespread lack of interest
in the recent school elections. Many campaigns were
only a "front." A band played in the study hall one

on the shoulders of the school leaders. They have gov
erned the school the best it has ever beengoverned.
They have anticipated the problems before they arise.
They have answered the issues justly: Mr. Smith
has perfected his system of dealing with school prob
lems. In short, no problem has arisen to create an
issue for the students to unite behind.
But what can be done for next year? The new
SSS will solve some of the problem. The long range
goal of SSS this year and in preceding years was
lost for want of a short range prize. The new SSS can
create that prize and boost morale and arouse in
terest. But the SSS committee, like a car, is only a
piece of machinery. However, if the students can
unite with enthusiasm and drive behind the idea of
SSS, it can be the unifying factor that the school
needs. K: B
