ASB Elections Dominate Campus Scene Wood Elected New Teachers For Next Year First Vice John Wood, newly elected first Vice-President for the 1965-66 school year, has participated in many activities at the school. He is pre-sently the junior class presi dent, has participated in football and wrestling, and is a member of Honor Society. John has also re ceived the honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. When asked for a statement, John stated, "I was elected to work under Dwight Morrill and I hope I can hold my end of the ladder up. I hope the student council will gain as much spirit as they did last year. a Judy Bryant Voted 1965 Yell Queen Judy Bryant was elected yell queen of next year's varsity rally squad. Assisting her will be Linea Sander and Sandy Tison, sen iors, and Danis Conklin, LuJuana Ferreira, Moya Sander, and Chris Wiley, juniors. Doing a routine to the Fight Song and the motions to the yell "Go, Go, Grizzlies," 15 Ash land High School cheerleader candidates demonstrated their abilities before the entire student body for the campaign assembly last Friday. For the last few weeks the girls who showed an interest in becoming varsity cheerleaders have been practicing in the gym after school under the direction of present yell queen, Pat Lorton and her senior assistants: Betty Schwiebert and Barbara Siebf.n list, learning and perfecting mo tions and dance steps. Others trying out were: Mimi Barron, Linda Hormel, Jorja Keil, and Jackie Peterson, juniors; and Janice DeBoer, Lyn Dowis, Peggy Ross, and Jody Tyler, sophomores. The junior varsity rally squad will be elected at a later date by vote of next year's sophomore class. Lyn Voris Wins Law Day Contest Lyn Voris, a senior at Ashland High School, will attend Law Day in Medford, and will be represent ing all of Jackson County. She received this honor because of the editorial she wrote, "Uphold the Law A Citizen's First Duty." A luncheon will be held during which time she will meet the local Bar Association. Lyn will also receive $25 at the same time she meets the Bar As sociation. Her editorial has been submitted to the State Bar Asso ciation for consideration on the state level. Girls running for office will be Lyla Voth President, Diane Coll- ver Vice-President, Rita Harris Secretary, Dana Weitman Treasurer, Amy Helm and Dar lene Beck Point Manager. Intra mural manager and publicity manager will be appointed in the fall by the President. The sopho more representative will also be elected in the fall. Present officers in the GRA are Dian Murpny president, Lyla Voth Vice P resident, Jane Smith Secretary, Margaret Briggs Treasurer, Amy Helm Point Manager, Linda Tucker Intramural Manager, Judy Wacker Publicity Manager. The GRA girls are also formu lating plans for scholarship to be iven to an outstanding senior irl in the GRA. New High School For Ashland? Next year's sophomores may be the first seniors to graduate from a completely new AHS building. According to a recent feasibilitiy report conducted by local engi neers, a completely new building should be built to replace the old Ashland Senior High within the next few years. If a new high school is to be built, it will probably be con structed in a campus style with each field of study occupying an entire building, such as the pres ent industrial arts building. (The advantages of such a set-up are numerous, but one that came to mind a couple of weeks ago was that only the science students would suffer when those strange odors came wafting out of the chemistry lab!) If thus construct' ed, the school would cover the present site plus all the land be tween the school and Morse Street. In the meantime, plans for next year include the remodeling of the church, where some English classes are being held now, to allow the entire English depart ment to operate there. h ' Li .......... Ci - i i( r m Dwight Morril, John Wood, Craig Korthase, Cathy Christy, Judy Bryant, and Bonnie Byrd were elected Ashland High Scnool ASB officers for the school year 1965-1966. Dwight ran unchallenged for the presidential ballot, but he campaigned vigorously for his votes. Mike Torresan was Morril's campaign manager. John Wood closely defeated two other first vice-presidential candidates. They were Bob Kaegi and Judy Wacker. Barbara Jones, Wood's campaign manager, gave an inspiring speech on John's be half during the campaign as sembly. Craig Korthase was elected to fill the second vice-president va cancy over Curtis White. Craig's campaign manager was Bob Lawrence. Judy Bryant was crowned next year's yellqueen by Pat Lorton, reigning queen. Linea Sander, Moya Sander, Danis Conklin, Sandy Tison, Chris Wiley, and Lujuana Ferreira will assist Judy as next year's cheerleaders. Fif teen girls tried out for the cheer leader spots. Cathy Christy, the dark horse candidate for the secretarial spot, won over the highly favored candidates, Ellen Craft and Carol Pennington. Cathy's campaign foreman was Pam Kaegi. Bonnie Byrd was selected from the business students as next year's treasurer. Prom To Be Held At Britt, May 15 LeLanne Jackson Wins Third Place Next year for the first time in several years, there will be a large turnover of teachers, with old ones leaving and new ones taking their places. In the English department, " Miss Kitchen and Mrs. Smith are leaving and in replacement will be two men teachers. Marlin Shanks, who was head carpenter at the Shakespearean festival last year and is now graduating from SOC with two majors and two minors all in various phases of English. Along with him will be Gary Wall, an all-around per son who student taught here this year. In the math department, filling in for Mr. Brady will be Mr. Ron Seeler, who was student teacher for Mrs. Windt this year. New P. E. Teacher Mr. Crane is moving to Roose velt High in Portland next year, and his position as P. E. instruc tor will be filled in by Mr. Copple, now a Jr. High P. E. teacher and assist High School foolball coach. The track coach position will be filled by the new Jr. High P. E. instructor, Jan Un derwood with some help by Norm Hottman. Both are now on the track squad at Oregon State. In the library Roger Hau"en. who was a student teacher for Mrs. Sohler last year, will be librarian, with Mr. Green working on the textbooks. NORTH EUGENE BAND TO PLAY IN CONCERT While in Eugene, the AHS band was invited to stay in the homes of members of the North Eugene High School band. Mr. Raoul Mad dox has announced tVat his band has been given the opportunity to return the favor. Last year, when the group trav eled to Eugene to perform in a concert at the University of Ore gon, the high school band par ents offered to act as hosts to the AHS band by providing a place to stay and meals in their homes. Mr. Clyde Miller, director of the North Eugene band, will bring his 65-70 piece band to par ticipate in a concert Friday eve ning, May 14. After the program the students will stav in the homes of the Ashland High mu sicians and will return to Eugene Saturday morning. Some of the numbers which will be performed at the eve ning concert will be the March of the Siamese Children, Dixieland . . . Front and Center, a concerto for Dixieland band with accom paniment, and a trumpet solo called Trumpeter's Prayer. Each band will play five or six num bers individually and then will combine to present the two con cert marches, Block M, and Them Basses. The concert is open to the pub lic, and Mr. Maddox has asked everyone who can to attend. He stated that "I would hate to have a poor turnout when we ask a band to come this distance to perform with us."
