The junior varsity courtmen are Jack Ragan, Dan Simpson, John Kaegi, Doug Kirby, Craig Kirby, Steve Bucke lew, Bill Petit, Bob Gruber, Clay ton Swartz, and Bernard Hamm. GOLF The five placing golfers for this year are Dian Murphy, Jon Roberson, Scotit Weaver, Toby Tobiasson, and Mike Dawkins. Other players are Brian Whitham, Tom Reid, Billy Kuhlwein, and Gregg Torrey. Diamond Tiffs Lost By Bears AHS last a pair of short base ball encounters last week, as Medford and Crater spoiled the Bruin openers. Medford capitalized on a six run third inning to down Ash land 9-3 in a five inning game. Ashland scorers were Ron Surber, Joey Williamson, and Dale Bar ger. Ashland out-hit and out goofed Medford as the Bears made six hits and the same amount of errors to Medford's three hits and one error. Pitch ing for the local team were Roy Taylor, Rick Waddell, and Dave Barger. Crater Downs Grizzlies Crater surprised the Lithians with a 13 hit, 15 run attack in a six inning game. Ashland scored no runs and only one hit, by Joey Williamson off Comet hurler Dave Bailey. Bailey also struck nit 10 of 21 AHS batters. Rogue River Falls To Ashland Girls The Ashland GRA played their last basketball game of the sea son recently, swamping Rogue River 50-16. High scorer for AHS was Lyla Voth, netting 26 points. Linda Tucker scored 10, Cathy Phelps made 6, and Dian Murphy scored 8 points. Playing for Ashland were Di ane Culver, Judy Jameson, Nancy Phillips, Lyla Voth, Bernadette Hawk, Dana Weitman, Linda Tucker, Teresa Logel, Barbara Gunter, Cathy Phelps, Dian Mur phy, and Vicky Budden. I Slightly ahead of his opponent, Wayne Calvary runs the low hurdles at a meet with Crater. Crater won, 69-62. Grizzlies Lose Pair To Klamath Baseballers JV's Tie Prospect Squad 4-4 The AHS Grizzly baseball crew dropped a pair of games to Kla math recently, 21-0 and 7-3. Klamath scored 13 runs in the first inning and their pitchers allowed Terry Clark one hit. The first inning saw eight hits, three walks, and four Ashland errors. Second game, 7-3 Scoring three runs in the first inning, the Grizzlies couldn't hold the hitting Pelicans, as Klamath scored seven runs on seven hits and no errors. Ashland had six hits and five errors. Joey Wil- Voth, Bradshaw; Athletes of Month liamson, Dale Barger, Bill Ber ninghausen, and Ron Surber col lected Bruin hits. The JV game was rescheduled. The JVs tied Prospect in a later content, 4-4 as it was called because of darkness. Girls Form Track Team Tim Voth and Cliff Bradshaw were voted the most outstanding athletes for the month of March recently. Tim won the award for his work in track, throwing the jave lin, shot, running the 880, and high jumping. Tim threw the javelin, during practice, 205 feet, 3 feet short of the school record owned by Gary Pennington. Tim holds the sophomore reoord. Pen nington's heave was tenth best in the nation last year. Tim is a five foot, nine inch, 150-pound junior. He has five years credit in track and also participates in football, baseball, and basketball. His hobbies are fishing, water ski ing, and hunting. Tim has let tered in football, track, and bas ketball and is in the Leterman's Club. Cliff, a six-foot, one-half inch senior, was second choice as Ath lete of the Month by the Rogue News sport staff as he has done outstandingly in tennis this year. Cliff has won all of his singles matches this year. This is his sec ond year in tennis which is also his hobby. He is in Lettermen's Club, Honor Society, and Humani ties Seminar. "The girls have been working very hard, and I feel that if they continue to work this hard, and continue to show improvement, we should be able to qualify four or five girls for the state meet was the comment made by Miss Shirley Lancy about the AHS girls' track team. The girls' first track meet will be held here, April 24th, against Medford. The State Meet will be held May 15th in Springfield. Competing for AHS will be Nicky Benbrook, Diane Collver, Rita Harris, Linda Hyland, Judy Jameson, Barbara Jones, Pam Kaegi, Jorja Keil, Linda Lane, Teresa Loegel, Cathy Phelps, Kelly Reed, Vicky Ross, Linda Rucker, and Lyla Voth. Trio Sets Ore-Cal Marks Three new records were set by Ashland trackmen at the Ore-Cal Relays at Southern Oregon Col lege on April 3. Outstanding in their events were Tim Voth who won the javelin event with a throw of 188 feet, 4 inches; Randy Nelson who set a new mark in the high jump with a winning leap of 5 feet, 10 inches; and John Meyer, Craig Hooper, Gary Hoo per, and Keith Munson who took the two-mile relay in a time of 8:29.8 (second best in the state at this time). Outstanding Men Other outstanding men for Ash land were Keith Munson in the invitational mile with a winning time of 4:40; Calvary, Nelson, Calhoun, and Slack who took a second in the shuttle hurdle re lay; LeBlanc, Farmer, Shults, and Starnes who placed second in the distance medley in which the members run a 1320, 440, 880, and mile respectively. In the discus, Gene Willis took third, and in the javelin, Gary Pennington was second. Lewis, Goddard, Slack, and Calvary took third in the sprint relay, and Shults, LeBlanc, Price, and Suem- nicht grabbed a third in the mile relay. In the 880 relay. Calvary, Slack, Lewis, and Goddard took second, and in the sprint medley, Voth, Shurtz, Rowley, and Craig Hooper took a first. The field events the girls will be entering are Discus, Javelin Shot Put, High jump, and Broad jump. Track events are 100 yard dash, 50 yard dash, relays, low hurdles, 220, and the 440. The managers for the track team are Dana Weitman and Janey Wyant.
