Sweaters for spring, made up in various styles, are here. The "bigger classics" are loose and heavy knit, made from Shetland and mohair wool Also here are the "ribbed skin nies," a close-fitting sweater made with a ribbing pattern for a sporty look. Take your pick from many colors and styles. For dress and evening, choose a pastel hell top. Made from mohair wool in a fine knit, these sweaters can be worn casual or dressy. The newest craze is the yarn flowers and designs decorating them, in wild and contrasting colors. For a different, off-beat look, try the crazy cut-outs Sniffs and blouses and swimsuits are de signed with cut-outs in the back, front, sides, or sleeves. "Unex pected" is a good woid for the garment made like this. Never mind the bewildered looks you might get. Be an individualist. old. Most of them were gold or silver and decorated with pre cious jewels. In the afternoon I visited the Via Venetto area. This is where the American Embassy is located and where the rather expensive shops of Rome are situated. This street is where many of the American tourists gather, so it is more American than Italian. Most of the materials for sale in the shops were quite high priced. Vatican Museums The second morning Mrs. Her bert and I toured the Vatican Museums. We spent over four hours there, but could have spent several days. The museums con tain many priceless paintings, sculptures, antiques, tapestries, etc. The Vatican treasury con tains gifts to the PoDes from visiting dignitaries. Here again were millions of dollars' worth of gifts. The Sistine Chapel was crowded with people. There I saw Michelangelo's paintings on the ceiling of the creation of the world and of man. On the wall behind the altar is his famous was a very interesting and edu cational program. On the third day I visited the National Museum and several other areas of interest. During the afternoon I accompanied Mrs. Herbert and her brother on a drive around other parts of Rome. We toured the Exposition area that was begun for a World's Fair in 1952. The Fair was never held, but some of the buildings were used for the 1960 Olympics. It is an area of beautiful modern buildings. We drove out the old Appian Way past the homes of many of the Italian movie stars. Mrs. Herbert's brother is a TV producer and director in Rome. We also toured the Square of the People, the Square of Novano with its three fountains, the houses of Congress and the Sen- French, showed a slides taken during study in France. , number of his year of ate, the Parthenon, the Olympic stadium and village, the Italian Forum built by Mussolini, and the Stadium of Statues. Friday the 7th of August I took the train from Rome to Milan. I had purchased a first-class ticket so I would be sure to have a seat. But I rode in a second- class compartment all day be cause the first-class sections were full. The train I took was the Italian-Holland express. I had quite a day of watching the changing scenery of Italy. The north is much more industrialized than the south. Many of the southern farmers still use oxen or do the work by hand.
