PAGE TWO ROGUE NEWS FRI., MARCH 5, 1965 Senioritis! If you are a senior, beware of senioritis! This virus will strike any .senior anywhere at any time. but usually it strikes during the second semester of school. Senioritis has symptoms which are easily recognized. If you are run-down, tired, sick of school, and a senior, you too are able to become its victim. Sen iors will find that their grades have fallen, they have not worked as hard as they could have, and they no longer care about school. Senioritis, sometimes called the senior slump, can. cause a person to become so anxious for grad uation that more time is spent daydreaming than doing home work. This illness is often com plicated by spring fever. Those students who have this often would prefer to spend their time outdoors, but this is impossible for they are constantly watched by parents, teachers, and even their fellow students. Well, just remember, seniors, that you only have to battle se nioritis and spring fever for 12 weeks, or 60 days, or 360 hours, or 21,600 minutes. Then all your suffering will come to an end with the closing of school and graduation! a Mystery Students Barbara Jones, secretary of the senior class, and basketball player Bill Hardy were the Mys tery Students in the last issue of the Rogue News. The mystery girl this time is a dark brown haired, brown-eyed senior. She is S'2i" and wears size 7',-i shoes and size 7 gloves. Among his favorites are French toast, football and skiing, the color blue, and phys ical education. Tacoma, Wash, is his birthplace and Feb. 23 is his birthdate. People who complain about the "younger generation" are his pet peeve. Morals "Where do good little girls go when they want to be bad?" stated the picture advertisement with the scantily clad girls for a forthcoming movie. This in itself would not usually be considered bad, except for the place that it was found a high school news paper published in the northern part of the state. Attention was drawn to the movie advertisement because of the particular type of paper a special edition on student behavior problems, indifferent school attitude, and moral problems. The paper de voted two full pages equal to the two pages you are now looking at to the subject in nine articles by the students. Each article stated that it is every student's responsibility to correct his own actions, and then to solve the moral and behavior problems of smoking, drinking, and necking that are a common occurrence at the school. On the back page the "good little girls" advertisement illustrated that they are not doin as they're preachin' in accepting their re sponsibility ! Co-op Living At the U. of O. Have you been thinking about attending the U. of O.? If you have been, start thinking about a place to live while you are there. In fact, the time to pick out a living organization is sometime yesterday. All freshmen must stay in a University dormitory except a small group which is permitted to join a cooperative house, better known as a "co-op." A co-op is a non-profit board and room unit which holds from i that every day we are taught. 25 to 60 students. The writer forgot to include both sides when he staled this argument. It was stated that due to the "captive audience," the speaker should not have ex pressed himself in the direction ! that he did. It was not stated OESER'S FLYING A SERYICE 345 LlthU Way II wy 99 North Phone 482-9051 basic reason for this problem in the first place? Is there mumbling in the background? You say that you are aware of a "moral and behavior decline" at AHS. A few examples will serve the purpose to show that there is a decline. Have you seen the "teacher baiting" in the study hall, the general dis respect for the teachers, the necking and related activity in the study hall and gym at noon, the trash on the grounds around school, smoking on the school grounds, and drinking before and after school games? For the second question what is responsible for students lowering their standards and why is this problem so important today there can be no definite answer. Possible explanations can be the decline of the American family relationship, the greed for money, and with it, sex exploitation, or the lack of goals and beliefs of today's teenager. How can we as AHS students solve this prob lem? By an easily understood, yet difficult to follow suggestion: Let's give up our attitude of indifference to what is going on, and become interested in the welfare of the school. After we accept our personal responsibility, be criticial with our peers. It is an odd phenomenon that when students are told to do some thing by their parents or teachers they have a habit of not doing it, but when told by fellow students and friends the amount of cooperation is remarkable Half the problem will be solved by the students recog nizing their responsibility and talking about the problem. Only in this way will Ashland Senior High School carry the reputation and student confidence that it so rightly deserves. K. B. While offering various social activities such as firesides, hoote- nannies, and dances, participation in the many campus activities, ranging from athletics to politics. is encouraged. Well-rounded students receive preference in the selection of members by the seven co-op houses who use certain factors in judging membership eligibility. High scholarship is necessary both in acquiring and maintain ing membership while the need for low cost housing receives much consideration as well. Lead ership ability in school, church, and other organizations places high on the criteria. These factors, combined with the advantages of group living, provide an excellent atmosphere for personal achievement. For further information or ap plications write to the Member- hip Chairman. Was he up front to amuse us with tricks? Hardly. His purpose was to show the "moral and spiritual decline" of the nation .and in doing so, used quotes from famous men, both Christian and non-Christian, and then gave his personal opinion. Even if a student in the audience was a non-Christian, how can he object to the talk when he could have listened to it from a purely moral viewpoint? This brings me to my last point. It was stated that it was not the right time or' place for a talk of that sort. Where is the right place? Because his subject matter concerns each and every one of us, I believe that it was the right place. How can we for mulate our own opinions if we are not exposed to the thoughts of others?
