Adventures in Florence

What type of girl are you? The
outdoors, romantic, or sophisti
cate? Be any one of these with
the fragrance you choose.
Fragrance is divided into four
different types: floral, modern,
forest blend, and oriental. If
you're the type who always keeps
a va.se of fresh flowers in your
room or loves to stand in a rose
garden, the gay, delicate floral
fragrances are probably what
you'd choose. On the other hand:
if your favorite dates are long
walks in the outdoors, the fresh,
woody, forest blends are for you.

I left Alba for Florence. One of
the families I had met in Alba
was going to the Isle of Elba for
a week's vacation. Since Florence
was one of the cities they had to
go through, they asked me to
ride that far with them. We drove
through the countryside to Asti
and Piacenza. The typical farms
are small, and the work is mostly
done by manual labor or oxen.
The buildings are quite old
many of them 500 to 1000 years.
Italian Roads and Drivers
At Piacenza we took the Auto
strada through Parma, Bologna,
and on to Florence. The Auto-
freeway in Italy and runs from
orientals.
Which Is For You?
Perfume changes chemically on
each person's skin. It actually be
comes a part of you. When test
ing, put a few drops on the inside
of your wrist and wait awhile.
Never expect it to smell the same
as it does in the bottle. Never
test more than one scent at a
time, and if you don't like the
first one, give your nose a rest
before trying another. This is the
way to find the scent that will ex
press your personality and make
you feel and smell dreamy. You'll
soon discover the perfect one.
How To Use Fragrance
Fragrance is just as important
as your bag or gloves. Splash it
on lavishly every day. For the
mast long lasting and formidable
effect, apply scent to the certain
areas of the body known as the
pressure points: the inside of
your wrists, the bend of your el
bows, your temples, the back of
your neck, the base of your
throat, and even the back of
your knees. The pulse beats are
closest to the surface of your skin
at these points, and as a result,
your body temperature is highest

fies and diffuses the fragrance

the south. Someday the Italians .'The Cathedral in Pisa seemed to
thedral, the Baptistry, and the
bell tower of the Cathedral. The
Baptistry is unique in that when
a note is sung, the echo that is
heard sounds like organ music.
The bell tower is the famous
Leaning Tower of Pisa. When the
tower was begun, the builders
did not realize the need for
strong foundation. After the first
three levels were completed, the
tilt was first noticed. As addi
tional levels were added, the
builder tried to overcome the tilt,
but the Tower has continued to
sink on one side. It is bow 14
feet off plumb and shifting 125
of an inch every year. Mathe
matical computers have worked
hope to finish it all the way to
the southern tip of the country.
Riding with a typical Italian
driver is an experience in itself.
They usually drive about 70
miles per hour, no matter what
kind of highway or country road
they travel on. The horn on the
automobile is an indispensable
item. If you see a car coming
toward you or traveling in your
direction, you press on the horn
until you have passed them. By
that time another car is in sight,
so the horn honks almost con
tinuously. We arrived in Flor
ence at noon.
Points of Interest in Florence
Florence is one of the impor
tant cultural centers of Italy. I
spent six days in Florence visit
ing many of the museums and
points of interest in the city.
Among the places I visited were
the Uffizi Galleries, where there
are 42 rooms of paintings and
sculptures by the great masters;
Pitti Palace, another famous art
museum; the Medici Chapels and
the Academy of Fine Arts, where
many of Michelangelo's sculp
tures are on display; and several
churches including the Baptistry
of St. John the Divine with its
golden doors. The Cathedral
with toilet water next. Perfume is (Santa Maria del Fiore), which is
the strongest, also costing more. 'ne tmra largest Catholic Church
be nearly as large as the one in
Florence.
Italian Pizza
The Indian man that I sat with
on this tour was an interesting
companion. He had been attend
ing college in San Francisco, and
was returning to his home in
India to be a pharmacist. He re
marked that Italian pizza is quite
tasteless when compared with
those he had eaten in the United
States. Most of the Italian food
was very good, but I had to agree
with him that the pizza wasn't
nearly as good as what is served
here.
In Florence I learned a great
deal about the culture and art of
Italy. Many of the craftsmen still
pursue the same occupations as
their ancestors did and in exactly
the same way. Again, much of the
work is done by hand with ma
chines used very little. Florence
Is famous for its jewelry, leather
and straw goods, and for its in
laid rock mosaics. On Sunday I
left for Rome.
Worms Said Good
Worms! Ugh! What is more
nauseating to a sophomore stu
dent who has just eaten his
breakfast than, upon entering his
daily biology class, to be handed
a pan full of wax, a set of tools,
and a long, ugly earthworm.
Well, there is something more
nauseating than a pan with a
long worm in it, and that is hav
ing to dissect this worm without
making it look like a year-old
piece of hamburger. Another
trick is trying not to touch it
with your hands while you are
looking for each part. It's
good thing that the kit included
a pair of tweezers.
Just after several members of
Mr. William Mearns' second
period class had barely recovered
from the initial shock, hysteria
nearly ibroke loose when Tim
Richards popped a worm into his
mouth as if it were quite a deli
cacy, lne worm, it was later
discovered, was only a rubber
replica.
Book Marker
Deciding on a life vocation is
one of the biggest problems faced
by high school students today. A
helpful guide in making this big
decision can be found in some of
the new books received recently
at the school library.
A Woman's Guide to Part-Time
Jobs, by Joseph D. Cooper, is a
guide on how and where to get
a part-time job and how to apply
for one. The book explains how
to manage a job and a home at
the same time.
Careers in World Affairs at
Home and Abroad is a vocational
guide concerning job opportuni
ties in the Americas, Africa, the
Far East, and Europe. Included in
the guide are hints on how to
apply for jobs with the various
departments of the U.S. Govern
ment, the Peace Corps, the United
Nations, and many others. There
are places listed where one can
write for pamphlets and applica
tion blanks.
But the most long lasting, strong
est, and most expensive of all is
bath and body oil, which should
be used sparingly. If scent fades
quickly on you, carry a flacon in
your purse to use in between.
Fragrance Do's and Don'ts
Do use some form of fragrance
regularly. Don't expose bottles to
strong sunlight or air, because
they tend to break down the ele
ments of the scent formula and
change the odor. Do use fra
grance in different ways such as
sachets for your clothing, fra
grance for rinsing your hair or
lingerie, or bath oil for silky,
fragrant skin. Io choose your
fragrance to suit the occasion
Don't forget, boys love fragrance
on a girl and often just a whiff
of your special scent will make
him think of you.
