Gridiron Tussle in Three Years
Do you believe in miracles? It the Pels took the ball to the Ash
almost is a miracle when the I land four yard line. The Bears
Grizzlies win a game in the stub
born Southern Oregon conference
and they did it Friday night when
they defeated the Klamath Peli
cans 13 7 on Phillips Field.
Playing tough football all the
way, both teams looked good, but
Ashland came out on the winning
end for the first time in three
years.
It was the Bears fifth win of
the season against only two
losses. The Grizzlies have last to
Phoenix, 26 13; and Grants Pass,
28-0; in hard fought contests.
They beat Lebanon, 43 0; Sweet
Home 260 ;Weed, 28-6; Yreka,
147; and the Pelicans 13-7.
The Bruins scored the first two
tallies in the second and fourth
quarters as the Pelicans scored
in the fourth quarter. At the end
of the first half a crucial situation
saw the stiff Bruin defense deny
the Pels a touchdown as they lost
the ball on four downs inside the
Ashland two yard line.
Daw Barger saw action early
in the second quarter replacing
Dave I.ohman and moved the ball
across the goal line in 13 plays.
He connected a 25 yard aerial to
Wayne Calvary on fourth down
and long yardage to go.
Crucial Plays
Two crucial pass plays set up
the last score when Barger hit
V'oth for 21 yards to the Ashland
46 yard line. A holding penalty
put the ball in a fourth down
and 11 so Voth punted out, but
Klamath players were offsides
and the Bruins had another
chance. The Ashlanders were
then charged with a delay of
game penalty which put the ball
right back where it started from.
Instead of kicking, Voth pulled
a surprise fake punt and threw
to Calvary for 22 yards and a
first down.
It was after the kickoff that
Upsets Predicted
Wild predictions have been I
forecast for the last two weeks
of football action in Oregon and
have been made by AHS faculty
members and Rogue News sports
writers.
Bruin Mentors, John Gray and
John Buck, have decided not to
comment on the outcome of the
Grizzly games, but both feel that
Grants Pass will edge Medford,
while Mr. Gray says Roseburg
will take State and Mr. Buck says

During the third quarter each
team proved their defense to be
worthy, and at the end of the
period the Bears found them
selves with a second down on the
Klamath 11-yard line. Voth took
a Barger handoff for the remain
ing yardage and another six
points .He also booted the extra
point.
Ashland gained control of the
ball again as Clark intercepted
a Williams pass on the Ashland
40yard line. Another 15-yarder
put the Bruins back on their 25
where a fumble gave Klamath
possession of the pigskin.
Three plays later the Pels made
their only score as Bob Moore
(196 pound fullback) scored from
one yard out. Don Plowman
kicked the conversion. The scor
ing was complete with Ashland
in the lead, 13-7.
The Pelicans got hold of the
ball once again and three des
peration passes on the Ashland
20 yard stripe failed.
Coach Gray said he was
pleased with the whole Grizzly
outfit, and especially quarterback
Dave Barger. He credited Randy
Nelson, Jack Gruber, Jim Conk
lin, and Dennis F.kwall for out
standing defensive work, and
Gruber, Wiley, Voth, and Torre-
san lor tneir great onensive
efforts.
Klamath controlled the statis
tics, making 16 first downs to
Ashland's 11; 244 total offensive
to the Bears' 124 yards rushing,
and 75 yards
passing

4 of 18 passes for 68 yards. Both
teams intercepted one pass and
lost two fumbles. Tim Voth punt
ed 36 yards on his only punt.
Each team had six penalties for
60 yards.
For 'Dark Horse'
will tie for the title.
Mr. Smith wants Medford to
beat Grants Pass and he says
Ashland has a very good chance
of beating Crater (as all the
other predictors feel). Smith also
forecasts the Ashland-Medford
homecoming game at 14-7 in Ash
land's favor. Mr. Silvers says
Ashland will beat the Comets and
Roseburg will take state and he
feels Ashland will edge Medford
13-7. The three writers disagree
completely.

Bruin Win
Scoring three times on thier
first six offensive plays. Grants
Pass took a commanding 21-0 lead,
but went on to be stunned by
the aggressive Bruin defense.
Pat Howe took a Tom Blanch

from scrimmage 63 yards to pay
dirt. After Ashland received the
kickoff and gained a first down
they were forced into a punting
situation. Tim Voth's punt was
blocked and the Cavemen had the
pigskin on the Bear 35 yard line.
Two plays later, Terry Crenshaw
took a 23 yard pass for the tally
to make the score 14-0.

Blanchard finally recovered
some protection in the third
quarter to throw a 78 yard pas
play to Summers for their final
score. All in all the Cavemen
were dumped for 108 yards in
loses, but the defense couldn't
do it all.
After the game the Cavemen

Grants Pass led in the statistics
column gaining 11 first downs to
Ashland's four; 95 yards rushing

At Yreka. Mike Torresan made
a 57 yard TD run and big middle
guard, Ken Preston, anchored the
defensive line.
During the Grants Pass game,

Nelson did a fine job at end
containing the plays.
