The Bears Grizzlies win a game in the stub born Southern Oregon conference and they did it Friday night when they defeated the Klamath Peli cans 13 7 on Phillips Field. Playing tough football all the way, both teams looked good, but Ashland came out on the winning end for the first time in three years. It was the Bears fifth win of the season against only two losses. The Grizzlies have last to Phoenix, 26 13; and Grants Pass, 28-0; in hard fought contests. They beat Lebanon, 43 0; Sweet Home 260 ;Weed, 28-6; Yreka, 147; and the Pelicans 13-7. The Bruins scored the first two tallies in the second and fourth quarters as the Pelicans scored in the fourth quarter. At the end of the first half a crucial situation saw the stiff Bruin defense deny the Pels a touchdown as they lost the ball on four downs inside the Ashland two yard line. Daw Barger saw action early in the second quarter replacing Dave I.ohman and moved the ball across the goal line in 13 plays. He connected a 25 yard aerial to Wayne Calvary on fourth down and long yardage to go. Crucial Plays Two crucial pass plays set up the last score when Barger hit V'oth for 21 yards to the Ashland 46 yard line. A holding penalty put the ball in a fourth down and 11 so Voth punted out, but Klamath players were offsides and the Bruins had another chance. The Ashlanders were then charged with a delay of game penalty which put the ball right back where it started from. Instead of kicking, Voth pulled a surprise fake punt and threw to Calvary for 22 yards and a first down. Another 15-yarder put the Bruins back on their 25 where a fumble gave Klamath possession of the pigskin. Three plays later the Pels made their only score as Bob Moore (196 pound fullback) scored from one yard out. Don Plowman kicked the conversion. The scor ing was complete with Ashland in the lead, 13-7. The Pelicans got hold of the ball once again and three des peration passes on the Ashland 20 yard stripe failed. Coach Gray said he was pleased with the whole Grizzly outfit, and especially quarterback Dave Barger. He credited Randy Nelson, Jack Gruber, Jim Conk lin, and Dennis F.kwall for out standing defensive work, and Gruber, Wiley, Voth, and Torre- san lor tneir great onensive efforts. Both teams intercepted one pass and lost two fumbles. Tim Voth punt ed 36 yards on his only punt. Each team had six penalties for 60 yards. For 'Dark Horse' will tie for the title. Mr. Smith wants Medford to beat Grants Pass and he says Ashland has a very good chance of beating Crater (as all the other predictors feel). Smith also forecasts the Ashland-Medford homecoming game at 14-7 in Ash land's favor. Mr. Silvers says Ashland will beat the Comets and Roseburg will take state and he feels Ashland will edge Medford 13-7. The three writers disagree completely. After Ashland received the kickoff and gained a first down they were forced into a punting situation. Tim Voth's punt was blocked and the Cavemen had the pigskin on the Bear 35 yard line. Two plays later, Terry Crenshaw took a 23 yard pass for the tally to make the score 14-0. All in all the Cavemen were dumped for 108 yards in loses, but the defense couldn't do it all. After the game the Cavemen praised the Ashland outfit by commenting that they had not I been hit so hard all season. Grants Pass led in the statistics column gaining 11 first downs to Ashland's four; 95 yards rushing and 118 yards passing to 41 yards total for the Bruins. The Lithians picked up four of Grants Pass' fumbles and lost one of their own. Ashland was penalized six times totaling 50 yards while the Cavemen lost only 15 yards on penalties. Randy Nelson, in the Weed game contained the runners and constantly threw the passer for losses. In the same game Tim Voth caught two touch down passes. At Yreka. Mike Torresan made a 57 yard TD run and big middle guard, Ken Preston, anchored the defensive line. During the Grants Pass game, Mike Torresan had three good runs . called back, and Randy Nelson did a fine job at end containing the plays.
