AHS Student Body President
Ashland High Schools home
coming activities officially got
under way last night as the sopho
more class lit its homecoming
bonfire at 6:30 p.m. The agenda
at the bonfire included speeches
by the Grizzlies' coach, John
Gray, and by the team captain
and co-captain, Jim Conklin and
Jack Gruber. The cheerleaders
were in charge of the noise de
partment as the casket contain
ing the Medford dummy burned
atop the bonfire. A pep band
from the high school provided
the "music."
Homecoming Princesses were
introduced at the bonfire. They
are Barbara Jones, De Ann Meg
gers. Lyn Voris .Teresa Krug, and
Pam Demo. The Homecoming
Queen has been chosen by the
football team and will be crowned
during halftime at tonight's game.
Today is Pep Day at A.S.H. All
the students are wearing wacky
clothes, carrying signs, and try
ing to bolster spirit rn any way
possible. The last half-hour of
today will be devoted to the
Homecoming Pep Assembly, the
biggest and loudest assembly of
the year. After school the Home
coming parade will begin. Parade
Marshall this year will be Harry
Wright, chemistry teacher at the
high school. The float judges will
be Allan Harris, Fred Rieken
back, manager of Copeland Lum
ber in Ashland; Phil Selby from
Selby Chevrolet; Mrs. Ruth Trost,
arts and crafts teacher at A.S.H. ,
and Mrs. Irene Roach, clerk in
the School Administration Office.
The parade will begin at the
high school, proceed down to the
Plaza, and then back ot the high
school. There will be 13 floats
in all. All three classes will enter
large floats and smaller floats
will be submitted by the follow
ing organizations: Rogue News
staff. Quill and Scroll Club, Thes
pians Society, Future Teachers
of America, Ski Club, Future
Business Leaders of America,
Arts Service Corps, Girls' Recrea
tion Association, and the Griz
zettes and Lettermen's Clubs to
gether. In addition, the Inter
national Relations League and
the Grizzly Knights will enter a
decorated car and the National
Honor Society will clean up after

the parade. Marching in the pa
rade will be the Ashland High
School Band under the direction
of Raoul Maddox, the Ashland
Junior High School Band directed
by Frank Kenney, the high school
majorettes, and the Flag Girls
from A.S.H.
The student body of Ashland
High would like to thank Mr.
Ernest Pellkofer for allowing the
A.S.H. Lettermen to paint the big
white A on his property to the
right of the O as a Homeooming
activity.

Seven Students Attend
Annual Press Conference
Seven AHS students recently I classes in the various procedures
attended the 38th Annual High
School Press Conference held on
the University of Oregon cam
pus. Advisors also in attendance
were Mrs. Selma McAlaster and
Mrs. Estel Sohler.
Students attending from the
newspaper staff were Kandy
Korthase, editor; Linda Prescott,
advertising manager; and Barbara
Moore, page editor. Those annual
staff members attending the con
ference were Carolyn Wolfe, edi
tor; Sandy Watts, photographer;
John Purves, sports editor; and
, Janey Lewis.
While attending the confer
ence, the students stayed at the
New Oregon Motel, just across
from the University campus.
Meetings held on Friday and
Saturday included sectional
involved in newspaper and an
nual production and general
meetings including all phases of
high school publications.
All of the students attending
this conference expressed that
they had learned a great deal
and hope to put this knowledge
to practical use in the Ashland
High publications.
CORRECTION
In the last Issue of the Rogue
News, the name of Mr. Dave
Wight was omitted from the
story on the AHS Danceband.
Mr. Wight, in addition to teach
ing band at the junior high
school, is the director of the
danceband.

Homecoming Queen
Seniors To Take
College Boards
College Board tests will be
given December 5 at Southern
Oregon College to those students
who have registered on time,
iteutraliou blanks must be in
Berkeley, California, by Novem
ber 7. These blanks may be
obtained from Mrs. Zwick or
Mr. Silver.
College Boards are required as
part of the entrance application
for all state colleges except SOC,
and for most private colleges.
Students planning to apply for
Oregon State Scholarships are
also required to take the tests
on December 5.
Students taking the aptitude
tests will be charged a $4.50
fee. Fees for one, two, or three
Achievement Tests are $6.75. Stu
dents must pay the fees when
they send the registration blank
to Berkeley, California.
The 1964 Homecoming Queen
has been chosen by the Letter
men's Club and will be crowned
tonight during half-time cere
monies by Mike Dawkins, vice
president of the Letterman's
Club. The girls vying for this
for this honor are senior prin
cesses Barb Jones, Teresa Krug,
De Ann Meggers, Lyn Voris, and
junior princess Pam Demo.
Barb is head of the Grizzettes
this year and secretary of the
nior class. She will be escorted
by John Williams.

Start New Club

Future Business Leaders of
America is a new organization
this vear at Ashland High
School for students enrolled
business classes, particularly
those who are interested in busi
ness as a vocation.
The FBLA meets every other
Tuesday under the leadership
of Mrs. Jean Fowler, adviser.
At present there are 16 mem
bers. Officers of the group are
Candy McMonigal. president;
Carol Shepherd, vice-president
Georgia Meyer, secretary; Dolly
Byrd, treasurer; and Ardith
Thompson, reporter.
Activity plans for the FBLA
include meeting with the Medford
group for a progressive dinner,
preparing a bulletin board dis
play for the main hall, inviting
college professors and local busi
ness leaders as guest speakers,
and making group visits to local
business and industrial firms
whenever possible.
Members of FBLA learn how
to compete with other members
on local, state, and national
levels; how to engage in business
enterprises; how to hold offices
and lead their groups; and how
to work well with representatives
from other student organizations
High school FBLA members
may continue their membership
in the college division of
FBLA, Phi Beta Lamba. The
collegiate chapters provide for
further learning in the business
field. Phi Beta Lamba is especi
ally active at Oregon State.
Teresa is student body secre
tary and was selected by the se
niors to receive the D.A.R. citi
zenship award recently. Her
escort is Brian Whittam.
De Ann was a homecoming
princess in her junior year, and
will be escorted by Dave Brown.
Lyn is one of the AHS major
ettes. Her escort is Mel Jackson.
Junior princess Pam is head
of the flag girls, and will be
escorted by Craig Hooper.
The Homecoming Queen will
reign over the dance loiiowing
the game tonight.
AHS STUDENTS CHOSEN
FOR JUVENILE JURY
Seven students from AHS have
been selected to serve on this
year's Juvenile Jury.
Chosen to serve on the jury
were: Judy Wacker, Lyla Voth.
Lora South. Amy Helm, Ken Ba
ker .and Terry Barrarlough; al
ternating with Craig Hooper .
The jury was selected by a
board consisting of five faculty
members who analyzed their ap
plication letters and made their
choices from the letters.
Under Judge Richard Cottle,
the jury will serve on juvenile
cases, and will consist of six high
school students and six college
students.
JUNIORS TO PRESENT
SADIE HAWKINS DANCE
Ashland High's female students
ill be given a chance to have
at least one date with the "boy of
their dreams" by inviting him to
the annual Sadie Hawkins Dance.
This dance, a traditional junior
class project, will be held Satur
day evening, November 7, in the
cafeteria.
Dress will be in the latest "Dog
patch" styles and prizes will be
awarded to those whose costumes
are the most realistic or hu
morous. Live music will be supplied by
a band ,The Bandidtos, composed
of Lynn Bassonette, Ron Dixon,
and Randy Voris. Ashland, and
Terry Bowles, Medford.
Tade Farmer and the junior
class officers make up the com
mittee that is in charge of the
dance.
