Ashland Wins Third
Straight; Weed Bows
After starting the season out
with a loss to Phoenix, the Ash
land Grizzlies have won three
straight games including two
shutouts. The latest win came
last Friday night when the Bruins
blasted the Weed Cougars 28-6.
Getting off to a slow start,
the usually shining Bear de
fense gave up Weed's only score
2 50 minutes into the game and
couldn't get things started in the
first period.
Suddenly the Lithians became
alive in the second quarter as
they began their scoring spree.
Tallying on a six yard gallop, Tex
Willis opened the Bruins scoring.
Tim Volh kicked the extra point
and the Grizzlies, took the lead
to stay. When Weed was forced
to kick inside their own ten
yard line the pass from center
was high and the pigskin rolled
into the endzone. An Ashlander
promply recovered the fumble
and the Grizzlies had a saftey;
they now led by a score of 9-6.
During the last half the Ash
land defense cracked down and
offense sharpened up proving to
be at their best. The defense
didn't allow Weed to gain any
yardage in the second half and
the offense picked up three more
tallies.
Conklin Hurt
Co captain, Jim Conklin, in
jured an elbow during the third
quarter. He was taken to a Cali
fornia hospital for X-rays and may
not see action next week.
Ashland struck pay dirt early
in the third quarter as Tim Voth
topped a long Bear drive with a
43 yard sprint for the touchdown.
He then kicked the extra point

with a five yard jaunt, but the

Waddell kicked the extra point.
J.V. Beats Weed
Scoring twice in the fourth
quarter, the Bears beat the Weed
Cougars 9-6.
The Cougars scored first in the
second quarter on an 80 yard play.
The Grizzlies were inside the Cou
gar 10 yard line three times in
the first half but each time they
were penalized and lost the ball
on downs.
During the second half Ashland
was in control of the ball almost
all the time, and early in the
fourth quarter the Bruins struck
pay dirt as Nardy Hamm scored
both the touchdown and the extra
point. Following the kickoff the
Bears caught the Cougars rn the
endzone for a safety.
