Comets Surge;
Upset Bruins
The Crater High School Comets,
coming back from a seven-point
deficit in the second quarter, up
set the never-6ay-die Grizzlies 58
to 46 while the Bruins dominated
the first half of play but flopped
in the second half.
Victory gave Crater its third
straight triumph in eight tries to
tie Grants Pass for third place in
conference play. The Fireballs,
red-hot from the field, marked
up a sizzling .500 shooting per
centage while the Grizzlies shot
an amazing .487 percentage. Both
teams hit well at the free throw
line. Crater averaging .632 and
Ashland .615. It was a hard-fought
contest in which the lead changed
six times and was knotted on
three occasions.
Ashland led at the end of the
first quarter 19-13. Then a free
throw by a sophomore. Randy Nel
son, gave Ashland it's biggest
lead of the game. Half time favor
ed the Ashland Club 30-29 and
the third quarter ended in a 45-38
margin for the home team.
Jack Gruber hit for 13 points
and picked off six rebounds while
Jeff Trost shot for all and Dean
Samuelson shot for 10. Summer
field got 14 and Turner got 12
points for Crater. Although there
was a low number of personal
fouls, many comments by adults
as well as students related that
the referees were not up to their
best as they charged Ashland with
a technical foul for throwing
paper on the court. This occurred
after the Crater side had emptied
garbage on the floor on occasions
before the foul.

Grizzlies Scare
Medford Club
Showing a distinct reversal of
form from the previous evening
when the Comets overhauled the
Grizzlies, Medford beat Ashland
67-52 but the Bruins gave the
league-leading Tornadoes a good
tussle all the way up until the
final minutes when the Medford
quintet enjoyed its widest spread
of the night
Medford took a 7-1 lead early
in the first stanza, but the Bruins
came back to narow the grap
to 13-10 at the end of the fray.
In the first few minutes of the
second quarter, Medford raised
the score to 20-12 but again the
Bruins fought back in one of
their better efforts of the season,
to knot the count at 20-20. During
the remainder of the half the
score was tied at 22-22 and 24
all; the Tornadoes pulled ahead
at the end of the half 27-24.
