PACE FOUR ROGUE NEWS WED., MARCH , 1964 Comets Surge; Upset Bruins The Crater High School Comets, coming back from a seven-point deficit in the second quarter, up set the never-6ay-die Grizzlies 58 to 46 while the Bruins dominated the first half of play but flopped in the second half. Victory gave Crater its third straight triumph in eight tries to tie Grants Pass for third place in conference play. The Fireballs, red-hot from the field, marked up a sizzling .500 shooting per centage while the Grizzlies shot an amazing .487 percentage. Both teams hit well at the free throw line. Crater averaging .632 and Ashland .615. It was a hard-fought contest in which the lead changed six times and was knotted on three occasions. Ashland led at the end of the first quarter 19-13. Then a free throw by a sophomore. Randy Nel son, gave Ashland it's biggest lead of the game. Half time favor ed the Ashland Club 30-29 and the third quarter ended in a 45-38 margin for the home team. Jack Gruber hit for 13 points and picked off six rebounds while Jeff Trost shot for all and Dean Samuelson shot for 10. Summer field got 14 and Turner got 12 points for Crater. Although there was a low number of personal fouls, many comments by adults as well as students related that the referees were not up to their best as they charged Ashland with a technical foul for throwing paper on the court. This occurred after the Crater side had emptied garbage on the floor on occasions before the foul. The underrated club beat Klamath Fall's JV club in a double overtime 51-50 as the Pels tried to stall at the end of each period. After the regulation playing time ended the two teams were tied at 46 points apiece; durin the next three minute period both teams scored only 2 points. In the final period Ashland hit first and Klamath knotted the count at 50-50. Then Ross Coldwell broke the ice with a gift shot with only 12 seconds remaining on the clock. Jim Conklin had 12 points and Wayne Calvary had 10 for Ash land while Jim Drew hit for 14 points and Kim Coon 11 for the losers. Klamath Fall's sophomores ed ged the Ashland sophomores 46 to 43 as Ron LeBlanc scored 12 points for the Bruins. Tucker had 11 points for the winners. Terry Ash, John Jendrezjewski and Jim Patzke all scored 12 points and Roger Baker added 10 as the Pels whipped Ashland in an aunusual game for the Bruins. Randy Nelson scored 12 points for Ashland. The Pelicans led at the half by a score of 30 to 21. The Klamath Falls J.V. team beat Ashland by a 50-34 margin while the Klamath Sophomores upset Ashland by a score of 52-41. Grizzlies Scare Medford Club Showing a distinct reversal of form from the previous evening when the Comets overhauled the Grizzlies, Medford beat Ashland 67-52 but the Bruins gave the league-leading Tornadoes a good tussle all the way up until the final minutes when the Medford quintet enjoyed its widest spread of the night Medford took a 7-1 lead early in the first stanza, but the Bruins came back to narow the grap to 13-10 at the end of the fray. In the first few minutes of the second quarter, Medford raised the score to 20-12 but again the Bruins fought back in one of their better efforts of the season, to knot the count at 20-20. During the remainder of the half the score was tied at 22-22 and 24 all; the Tornadoes pulled ahead at the end of the half 27-24. Medford Topples Grizzly Quintet A determined Medford club put down all upset hopes of the Griz zlies last Friday night rolling up an easy 77 points against 33 hard fought counters made by six field gials and 21 free-throws by Ash land mentors. Four men scored in double fig ures as the Black Tornado storm ed the Grizzlies. Steve Davis J-'d both clubs scoring 14 points, Bill Enyart had 13, and Mike Barnes 12 points, and Bill Houston 10. Jack Gruber and Bill Jury led Ashland with eight each. Dean Samujlson led the Grizzly attack, scoring 13 points and suc cessfully stealing the ball from the opponents time after time. Dean and Dave Barger were des cribed by many as two of the most aggressive Ashland players in a long time. The Pels had 12-11, 32-29, and 45-38 quarter spreads. Ashland closed the gap from a 54-46 dif ference in the last two minutes of play. Klamath broke a 9-8 lead by the Bruins in the first quarter to take the lead for the rest of the game.
