Opinions on Crest
(Editor's note: At the March 2j Kathy Freeman, sophomore: "I
Student Council meeting, the idea I think it's a good idea as long as
of having a school crest was dis
cussed. This crest, which a manu
facturer has offered to provide
free of charge, would be used on
school stationary, etc.)
Theo Byrns, sophomore: "It's a
good idea as long as it doesn't get
to the point where it becomes
silly."
John Kaegi, sophomore: "It's
kind of a dumb idea, if you ask
me."
Karen Baker, sophomore: "It's
all right, but I don't see the use
of one; we've done all right with
out it so far."
Dave Garner, sophomore: "I
don't like the idea."
Kerry Lindley, sophomore: "If
it's free, why not?"
Jack Reagan, sophomore:
"Sounds good as long as it doesn't
become silly or stupid."
the school is getting it free."
Sheila Butler, sophomore: "I
think it's a good idea."
Meredith Fischer, senior: "I
think it's a good idea. It could
be used on class rings and on
raduation announcements, etc. It
sounds neat!"
Tim Thompson, senior: "It
would be a good idea of we had
an original design."
LeLanne Jackson, sophomore:
"I think it's a good idea."
Sue Conner, senior: "It would
give our school distinction."
Ann Johnston, senior: "I think
it would be really great if it is
used all the time. It is kind of
like our school colors."
Linda Prescott, Junior: "I think
it would be a cute idea of we
had something to use it on, but
if we had it and didn't use it.
it would be stupid.

Who's Minding the Store?
Jerry Lewis scores another one.
Yes, Jerry Lewis, that madcap
maniac you saw in the "Nutty
Professor", has done it again in
"Who's Minding the Store?"
The story Isn't too important;
it concerns the old story about
mother not wanting daughter to
marry below her station in life.
Jerry Lewis plays the individual
in Jove with daughter, daughter
is played by Jill St. John, and
mom is acted by Agnes Moore
head. The picture was very funny in
the sequences featuring Lewis,
but dragged at times when the
supporting actors took over.
Among the other featured play
ers was Ray Walston who played
a sex-crazed office executive.
Nancy Culp, who is featured as
Jane Hathaway in the "Beverly
Hillbillies", was a disappointment
in her role as a masculine big
game hunter.
"Who's Minding the Store?"
was a wild laugh on big business
and big businessmen.
Accompanying this Jerry Lewis
comedy was a minor epic titled
"Duel of the Titans". This picture
was filmed in Italy and starred
two Ameicans: Steve Reeves from
the Hercules pictures and Gordon
Scott who used to be in the Tarzan
pictures (aahheeee, remember?)
Both of these muscle-bound
heroes moved through their parts
with all the agility of robots.
The movie concerned the found'
ing of Rome but this fact wasn't
brought out until the last ten
minutes of the picture.
A Ticklish Affair
"A Ticklish Affair" was a good
motion picture. It concerned
Navy widow (Shirley Jones) who
was raising three small sons
single-handedly. Along came
handsome Navy captain (Gig
Young). She liked him and he
liked her.
The only flies in this ointment
of love was that he was a Navy
man who traveled-frets- base-to
bers to become better acquainted
with international relations and
organizations.
At the meeting, the students
formed a model Common Market
and attempted to solve the quest
ion of what to trade and what
tariff concessions to make if
Great Britain were allowed to
enter the Common Market.
Out of seven possible offices
and awards to be won at the
annual convention, schools in
Southern Oregon captured five.
Jon Roberson, as mentioned previ
ously, was elected state vice-pre
sident. Grants Pass was voted the
second most active club in the
state and won an award for having
the best notebook, Crater won the
award for having the third best
notebook, the state historian was
from Medford, and a Grants Pass
student was elected to the office
of state secretary.
The former vice-president of
the state organizatin was Angus
Duncan whose father is a repre
sentative from this district to
Congress.
Are You Auto
Safety Conscious?
Here is a chance for the stu
dents of Ashland High to prove
to themselves and to everyone
else that they are auto safety
conscious. Besides proving a
point, there are 29 cash prizes
that can be won by the students
in the high school Auto Safety
contest sponsored by the Amer
ican Motorists Insurance Com
pany.
There are four divisions in the
contest. The first is for auto
safety material printed by a
school weekly or bi-monthly news
paper in a series of publications
during the contest period Feb
ruary 24 to April 6, 1964. The
second division is the same as
the first except it is for non
weekly publications. Division num
ber three is for all other auto
safety work done in school by
the students. Individual student
creative work is included in the
fourth division.
Additional details and infor
mation can be obtained in Mrs.
McAlaster's junior English room

Behind the Scenes:
Art Service Corps
When one stops to remember
the work that the Art Service
Corps has done, he can truly ap
preciate this organization.
As a comparatively new club
(founded last year), the Art Ser
vice Corps has contributed its
services to making posters for
school and social functions, doing
bulletin boards for teachers, and
sponsoring a campaing for stash
ing the trash.
This year a new program has
been set up. There is a workshop
and a service division. The former
is to permit members to work on
artwork of their own choosing;
the latter is the regular part of
the club that does the service
projects.
The A. S C. has added another
feather to its cap by the Inter
national Art Exhibit in the school
library last fall To mention some
of the countries represented in
this exhibit were Japan, South
Viet nam, India, Holland, and
Turkey.
Behind the scenes, the Art
Service Corps functions quietly
but its services can be appreciated
by all. Hats off to the Art Service
Corps!

Humanities Seminar meeting
which was held at the home of

The students prepared for this
seminar by reading sections from

BAND PRESENTS CONCERT
On Thursday, February 8, the
Ashland High School Band pre
sented a special concert for the
student body. The band, directed
by Mr. Raoul Maddoz, played a
selection of marches, Latin Amer
ican numbers, and modern serious
music.
This is the first time the band
has put on a special concert for
the students and Mr. Maddox
commented that he thought the
audience was one of the best the
band had ever performed for.
Also at the performance, Mr.
Maddox introduced the mem
bers of the student body who
were chosen for alUtate band.
orchestra, and chorus. Charles
Moore, John Reid, and Marcy
Tretsven will play in the band
while Bill Alner and Steve Chap
man were chosen for the chorus
and orchestra, respectively.
The most important question
discussed "vas whether happiness
is the same for all people. Most
of the students felt that happiness
is different for each person, thus
refuting Aristotle's assertion that
happiness is the same for all
people whether they realize it or
not. To support their argument,
the students referred to Happiness
Is A Warm Puppy.
A second " question discussed
was whether a person has a right
to happiness, even at the expense
of other people. It was generally
agreed that true happiness is not
possible when other people are
injured.
Yell Queen Kay Newton
Interviewed by Reporter
At one time or another almost
every girl has wanted to be on
the- rally squad and receive the
recognition and popularity that
seems to automatically come with
cheerleading. Kay Newton, Ash
land High's Yell Queen, gave
another side to the picture
when she was interviewed by this
reporter for the Rogue News.
One of the first questions asked
was why she had to wear a
brace on her knee while yell
leading. Kay replied that once
when she was practicing the
jplits, she threw her knee out of
place and if she doesn't wear the
brace her knee might "pop" out
if place, thus showing one of
the hazards of cheer-leading.
There is more to cheer-leading
than getting out in front of the
student-body and leading the yells.
It takes hard work and a lot of
practice in order to have a good
yell squad. Kay said that the
cheerleaders have four practices
after school during the week for
about an hour. They also had
practices during the summer.
Greatest Responsibility
According to Kay, "the greatest
responsibility of a cheerleader is
to remain peppy and energetic
all the time." And as yell queen
Kay has many duties to perform:
organizing yells, representing the
yell squad in Student Council,
organizing pep assemblies, and
many other smaller duties.
When asked if she remembers
any embarrasing incidents which
she wished she could forget, Kay

Advantages of Cheerlcading
But, according to Kay, there
are many rewarding moments in
cheerleading "like times when be
fore the pep assembly, the school
doesn't seem to have any spirit
and you ask them to do a yell
for the team and they really yell.
It makes me feel good and very
happy. I also get to meet a lot
of people," continued Kay, "and
I enjoy meeting and talking with
others."
After five years of cheerleading
Kay says that there are many
advantages which outweigh the
disadvantages. When she was
asked if she had any time for
other activities, the yell queen
replied, "Yes, I enjoy dances
and parties. I also enjoy knitting,
cooking, and snow skiing, even
though I'm not very good."
As she is a senior, this will
be Kay's last year of yell-leading.
She has demonstrated her talents
and abilities as a good cheer
leader all through high school
and seems to have enjoyed every
minute of it.
