SEPT. 25, 1963 ROGUE NEWS PAGE THREE Three Women, Two Men Join Ashland High Faculty Mrs. Kenney Has Two Jobs This Year Mrs. Julia Kenney, sophomore and senior English teacher, is undertaking two new jobs this year. She was married last June to Mr. Franklin Kenney, band director at the junior high, and she h:i begun her first year of teaching. She had previous experience as a student teacher for one term at Ashland Junior High and also at the senior high school. Mrs. Kenney attended Applegate : Grammar School and Grants Pass I High School; her degree was ! obtained at Southern Oregon College where she majored in ' Social Science and minored in ' English. I A former Girl Scout councilor, Mrs. Kenney likes to hike in the ' mountains around her Applegate ranch. Spanish Teacher From Costa Rica - Our new Spanish teacher this year comes to us from Winters, California. Mrs. Lois Wright lived in Costa Rica for fourteen years and attended a Spanish school there. She has three daughters, two nf which attend Briscoe Srhool. Mrs. Wright's husband works in highway construction. The Scnora adds that she is sur prised at all the handsome, intel ligent students at Ashland High School. New Typing Teacher Miss Maureen Smith, the new Typing I, Typing II, bookecping, and office practice teacher, has many intrests. Some of these are camping, horses, reading, and especially fishing. This is her second year of teaching. Her previous experience was at Chanute High School and Junior College in Chanute, Kansas. A graduate of Wichita North High School, Wichita, Kansas, she attended Kansas State Teachers' College and College of Emporia. There she received her Bachelor of Science degree for Business Education in 1961. She received hpr Masters' degree in Business Education in 1962 there also. By Mary Brostad FORTY-NINE STUDENTS NEW THIS YEAR Forty-nine new students joined our student body this year. Seventeen are sophomores, 23 are juniors, and nine are seniors. New sophomores are David Baker, Mary Anne Bennett, Vic toria Budden, Leslie Crone, Diane Edwards, Phillip Green, Lynn Huffman. Colleen Kirby, Lorrie Kirby, Charles Knapp, Barbara Moore, Rick Munshaw, Ronni Poulsen, James Robbins, Riley Sauers, Daniel Smith, and Linda W enker. George Alderson, Mary Alder- son, Rita Allen, Shirley Ander son, Bobbye Benneth, Layle Bostwick, Michael Brady, Rachel Carrithers, William Fehrenbach Donna Hake, Jim Helms, Con stance Hiatt, Curtis Huffman, Douglas King, Barbara Mc Daniel, Nancy Mallory, Donald Paris, Ruth Peters, Glenn Pit- zer, uianne Rush, Juda Sawyer, Sharon Schmclzer, and Carolyn Wolfe are the new juniors. New seniors are Roy Benentt, Maria Crone, Marcia Gilbert, Clark George, Dora Honle, Neil Ivcrson, Robert Jordan, Joanna Peters, and Rebecca Peters. Mr. Gray Teaches American Problem In addition to coaching the football team, Mr. John Gray also teaches American Problems and United States History. He attend ed Lincoln School in Grants Pass and, according to Mr. Gaylord Smith, a former classmate, Mr. Gray was a "tremendous all- around athlete." After serving two years in the Army in Europe during the war, Mr. Gray came back to Grants Pass. He received his Bachelor of Science and his Master of Education degrees at SOC where he also played full back on the football team. In 1950 he started teaching at the junior high where he was also a coach. Mr. Gray, who is married, has four children: Judy, 9; Pete, 7; Kathy, 5; and Steve, 3. Mr. Hall is New Driver Training Teacher Mr. Jack Hall, the driver train ing teacher at Ashland High, had his own driver training school for one and a half years. Before coming to Ashland, he taught driver training at Crater High School in Central Point. He attended grade school in Washington and Arizona, high school in Washington, Arizona, and California, and college in i Berkely. Oakland, and Portland State. He majored in physical education and business administration. Mr. Hall's two children are Gwendoylin and Barbara; his main interests are archery, flying, boxing, hunting, and football. -!y?" MRS.
