Juniors, Seniors Busy
Seniors have picked their
flowers and motto for graduation.
The flowers will be pink and
white carnations and the motto
is "Today's dreams are tomor
row's fulfillments."
Juniors are well under way
with the Junior-Senior Prom
which will be held this Saturday,
May 11, from 8 to 12 p.m.
Quill and Scroll Elects Officers
On May 1 Quill and Scroll, the
national honorary society for high
school journalists, held elections.
Terry Skibby was elected presi
dent, Jan Susee will hold the
office of vice-president, and Kathy
Tilford will be secretary-treasurer.
Flag Girls To Have Tryouts
Bev Hartford has announced
that there will be tryouts in the
near future for any girls interest
ed in joining Flag Girls next year,
Also, the senior girls would like
to sell their uniforms for twenty
dollars apiece.
G.R.A. Sponsors Sports Night
About seventy people attended
the Sports Night sponsored by
G.R.A. on Thursday, April 18, in
the high school gym. The activ
ities of the night consister of
volleyball, badminton, ping-pong,
tumbling, basketball, and tram
polining. Mr. Marshall Jones, Miss
Shirley Laney, Mr. Raoul Maddox,
and Mrs. Susee were the chape
rons for the evening. Refresh
ments of Coke and cookies were
served.
Band Receives High Ratings
Led by Mr. Raoul Maddox, the
Ashland High School Band played
in the annual band contest held
at Southern Oregon college on
Friday, April 26. Mr. Maddox
led the band in three numbers:
"Proud Heritage," "Coral Pre
lude," and "Chester Overture For
Band." For their superior perfor
mance, the Ashland High band
received ratings of superior, ex
cellent, and superior.
Majorette Tryouts Scheduled
As the '62-'63 school year draws
to a close, the majorettes are
working hard in preparation for
the coming school year. Linda
Weber, head majorette, has been
working with the girls perfecting
fundamental twirls and learning
a routine which will be performed
before a group of judges who will
select the majorettes for next
year.
Next year s majorettes will be
selected on the basis of ability
to execute basic twirls, mach
ine ability, poise, showmanship,
rhythm, cooperation, and ability
to work as a team.
F.T.A. Members Attend Dessert
Marcy Tretsven played a flute
solo at a dessert held at the
Community Club in Medford,
Saturday, April 20. The F.T.A.
members of Ashland High were
invited to attend but because of
previous arrangements few were
able to attend.
Exchange Student Says "Good-bye"
Spanish Students
Place In State

ions given by the Oregon Chap
ter of the American Association
of Teachers of Spanish and
Portuguese.
Bill Tilford was third in the
fourth-year class, and Betty Mar
tin tied for fifth in the same
catagory. Kathy Rucker was sec
ond in third-year, and Bill Ber
ninghausen placed fifth in second-
year.
The papers will go to the
national chairman for cocpetion
in the national level. Twenty-four
schools in Oregon took part in
the test.
On Monday, April 29, Ali Sanar
said good-bye to the students
and faculty of Ashland High
school. Ali, the Turkish exchange
student, spoke to the assembled
group after being introduced
by Student Body President Mike
Cotton.
After thanking the students
and teachers. Ali described his
school life as well as interesting
and humorous highlights of the
education, dating customs, re
creation, and daily life of the
typical Turkish teen.
Following a serious discussion
of political and economic con
ditions in his country, Ali ex
plained various aspects of Islam,
which is the major religion of
Turkey.
After Ali explained how and
why he was chosen as an Amer
ican Field Service student, he
and Mike exchanged flags.
