The "Take Me Out To The Ball
Game" season is here, along with
track, tennis, and golf. Awaiting
the students of AHS are a lot of
rollicking fun, entertainment, and
good weather. Spring brings sun
shine and activity to Ashland;
weekends are filled with things
to do. One could see the Grizzlies
play one of eight scheduled
double headers, watch the mighty
tracksters flex their muscles,
observe a fast and exciting tennis
match, or watch the new sport
at AHS. golf.
Track appears to be the bright
spot for Ashland. Coach Crane
Gerald Brown, high jumper and
hurdler Jim Lamb, and pole
vaulter Howard Johnson are out
standing. Speedy Ron Boyce
and Tod Hess give the Grizzlies
strength in the 100 and 200
yard dashes. Tod is also a good
broad jumper and relay man. Tom
Hoff who throws the javelin and
distance runner Jack Tyler are
also exceptional and many sophs
are showing a lot of promise.
Forty-eight men are out for
baseball and there are six re
turning lettermen: Bill Tilford,
John Rhodes, Rick Pierce, Dean
Samuelson, Jan Susce. and Gene

returning seniors Marty Burns,
John Waker, Chuck Calhoun, and
Dennis Elder along with promis
ing underclassmen Bill Bowman
and Jeff Trost battle it out the
top spots on the team. Their first
rival will be Klamath Falls on
March 30 in Ashland. Coach
Apodaca said, "I predict we'll go
to state again; there's no question
about it."
A new sport has come to AHS.
It promises to hold the attention
of many sports enthusiasts. Golf
is creating a lot of interest around
the school; the students are
hoping Ashland has found a sport
in which it can be tops. There
are 15 golfers participating in
cluding two girls. On April 5 the
better AHS golfers will meet in
Grants Pass to go against the
Cavemen. Other teams from Med
ford, Marshfield, and possibly
Klamath Falls will compete with
the Bears. Coach Iba has high
hopes for his team which is being
instructed by the professional
golfer, Mr. Jim Porterfield.

in the Rogue News these teams
did not receive the publicity
which they deserved.
The J.V.'s beat Shasta twice,
Klamath Falls. Crater, and
Phoenix. The sophs won games
from Crater twice, and beat the
Phoenix J.V. team. The combi
nation of these teams and the
juniors who were on the varsity
squad this year should make the
Grizzlies "hard to beat" next year.
Due to a lack of space in the
Rogue News the following
varsity basketball players were
not featured: Howard Johnson,
Greg Lindley, Marvin Morris, Joe
Raynes, Dean Samuelson. Jeff

apologizes to these players who
did so much for the Grizzlies, saw
a lot of action, and scored many
points during the season.
