PAGE TWO HOGUE NEWS WED., DEC. 19, 1962 The Ugly American In The Rogue Valley By Bruce Bamforth During the last pear season there were many Mexican National ists in the Rogue Valley. I was hired by the J. J. Newberry store in downtown Med ford to associate with the Mexicans and help them find what they wanted to buy. The language barrier presented a problem, but the Mexicans seemed to be amused by my version of their language. They were delighted to have someone attempt to speak Spanish. Soon I had gained many friends and had become very close amigos with two of them, Ramon Cerbantes and Sacarias Gonzales. 1 started to go to Medford every Tuesday night for the enjoyment of being with my friends, not for money. The money I made just barely paid for the transportation. It was not work any more, it was fun. I had just finished reading a book called "The Ugly American" when I .took the job. This inspiring book tells of the American attitude which has hurt us so much when dealing with foreigners. My association with the Mexicans helped me to understand more fully what the book was saying. I realized that the image of the Ugly American docs exist right here in the Rogue Valley. When an American goes to Mexico or other foreign countries, we are treated with respect, kindness, and friendliness. At least we are treated this way until we do something which makes the foreigner lose his respect for us. The Mexicans came here to help harvest our crops. It is true that they were paid, but they did have to sacrifice a lot to come here and they deserve to be treated with the same respect that they give us. One Tuesday night my two best Mexican friends asked me to come visit them if 1 ever went to Mexico. Tnis is real hospitality. I said that 1 would and I intend to do so this next summer. But did anyone in the entire Rogue Valley ask any of the Mexicans to visit them at their home? I do not think so. Few people would even talk to them or try to make them feel welcome. The reason, as pointed out in "The Ugly American", is the American's superior ity attitude. Even if a person would have wanted to visit with a Mexican, he probably wouldn't do so because of what the neighbors might say. Foreigners shouldn't be looked down upon because in our opin ion they have less. If Americans are ever to succeed in their associ ation with foreign countries we must get rid of our superiority attitudes. It is necessary that we do this because the United States -can no longer stand alone in the world.
