CROSS COUNTRY LOSES;
BROWN PLACES FIRST
The Ashland High cross country
team lost to Klamath Falls, at
Klamath, by the score of 39 to 20.
The highly touted Ashland run
ners placed one man in the first
eight who crossed the finish line.
The first place runner was
Gerald Brown, who turned in his
seventh straight first place of the
season with the time of 12:03. The
next seven places were taken by
Klamath runners.
Brown was followed by Bob
Scholl (K.F.) with the time of
12:18. Running third was Don
Piper with a 12:32; Laurence,
13:11; Sweek, 13:23; Vaagen,
13:25; Sandavol, 13:27; all of these
runners were from Klamath Falls.
Ashland runners who placed were:
John Reid. 13:33; Forrest Cole,
13:43; and Earl Iba. 14:04.
Cavekids Drop
Grizzly Cubs
The Ashland Jayvees played
host to the Grants Pass Jayvees
on Oct. 22. In the game the Cave
kids scored twice in the first
part of the game.
In the middle of the second
quarter Ashland scored the only
touchdown with a 69 yard pass
from Dave Barger to Roger Ather
ton who took the pass on the
Grants Pass forty yard line and
ran the rest of the way to pay
dirt unmolested.
Grants Pass defeated Ashland
by a score of 12-7.

Ashland Grizzlies Featured

Dennis Elder is the Grizzlies' born in Ashland and is sixteen
overworked punting specialist. He
has succeeded in getting them out
of some tight spots with his
tremendous punts. Dennis is a 6',
190 pound, seventeen year old
senior who likes football, tennis,
and cars. He was born in Salt
Lake City, Utah and plans to
enter Brigham Young University
to go into the field of business
administration. Dennis says that
he has no favorite classes, he just
wants to get through.
Mike Torreson is a 5', 9", 150
pound sophomore halfback. He
has a stupendous running and
pass catching ability and has
sparked the Grizzlies to many
touchdowns. Mike likes to hunt
and water ski. He plans to go
to Stanford and become a phys
icist. His favorite class is debate
Mike was born in Klamath Falls
almost seventeen years ago. He
says that his main dislikes are
fakey girls and unfair school
rules.
Dave Barger is a sophomore
quarterback who has seen a lot
of action this year because of his
tremendous passing talent. Dave
likes all snorts and plans to go
to college at Oregon State and
become a star athlete. His favorite
class is Physical Education. Dave
is 6' tall and KiO pounds. He was

years old. He dislikes losing in
football.
Ron Boyce is a speedy, hard
fighting halfback for the Ashland I
Grizzlies. His hobbies are fishing
and water skiing. This junior
plans to go to Southern Oregon
College for two years and then
go to the Oregon Technical In-
titute. He likes Spanish the best
of any of his classes. Ron is 5'6"
tall and 145 pounds. He was born
in Eugene and likes everything.
Howard Johnson is our first
string quarterback and a good
one. He is very agile and de
ceptive. Howie likes all sports.
He nlans to major in P.E. at the
University of Oregon. His favorite
class is physiology (his father
is the teacher). Howie is presi
dent of the Letterman's Club and
has lettered twice previously. He
is 511' tall, and seventeen years
old. He dislikes mushy apples and
sour oranges.
TORNADOES TOP BEARS
Medfords Black Tornadoes
trampled the Ashland Grizzlies
48 to 0 last Friday night in Ash
land. The game was much closer
than the score iidicates. The
Bears were able to move the ball
and held Medford's offense on
several occasion.
Brown Places
In Cross Country
Gerald Brown, Ashland, placed
third in the district cross country
meet held in Klamath Falls,
October 27. Brown, who was suf
fering from a slight case of blood
poisoning when he ran the race,
finished with a 11:56 behind
Brjmback of Medford and Lyons
of Grants Pass. Brumback finish
ed first in the time of 11:51,
while Lyons finished second with
a 11:54 clocking. Finishing out the
first ten to place were; Scholl
(KF) fourth; Lawrence (KF)
fifth: Piper (KF) sixth: Woods
(G.P.) seventh: Alvarez (C.)
eighth: Swartzfager (M) ninth:
and Mallams (M) tenth.
Those who placed for Ashland
were; Jack Tyler, 11th; John
Reid, 12th; Cole, 13th. Earl Iba
placed 19th followed by Mike Mc
Guire and Mike Dawkins who
placed 22nd and 28th respectively.
Out of 210 contestants Gerald
Brown placed eighth in the state
meet in Salem. November third.
Dennis Brumback of Medford
took fifth place with Cliff Lyons,
Grants Pass, taking 17th.
Cross Counfy
Defeats Klamath
The Ashland cross country
runners defeated the Klamath
Falls harriers here Oct. 20, 25 to
30. It was the first loss for the
Pelicans who defeated the
Grizzlies earlier this season in a
meet at Klamath Falls. This was
the last meet for both clubs be
fore the District meet at Klamath
Falls Oct. 27. The victory brought
the Grizzlie's season record to 4
wins 3 losses.

Gerald Brown took first place
his seventh of the season, run
ning the mile and eight tenths
in 9:43. Piper of Klamath was
second with a 9:48. Lawrence.
Klamath turned in a 10:08 third
place, with Jack Tyler fourth
with a 10:09, just one small
second behind Lawrence. Tom
Price, another Grizzlie, was fifth
with a 10:20 clocking.
Others who placed were:
Vaagen (K) sixth; John Reid
(A) 10:25; seventh; McGuire (A)
10:29. eighth; Sandoval (K) ninth;
Dawkins (A) 10:37 tenth.
