Abolish the Bonfire?
By Sharron Oviatt
This feature will be a regular
column in this year's ROGUE
NEWS. Its main purpose is for
the enjoyment of the students.
The items will be taken from
back issues of the ROGUE NEWS.
This column has been taken
from the 1950-51 ROGUE NEWS
Is it fair and right for the upperclassmen to try to burn the
wood collected by the sophomores for the annual Homecoming
bonfire? Sure, it's a lot of fun and it provides a little excitement,
but when lives and property are endangered by the act of throwing
gasoline on a pile of wood and then setting a match to the wood,
the game ceases to be fun and becomes dangerous.
Mr. Gaylord Smith, principal, spoke to the Student Council
on Monday, October 29, concerning this matter. He stated that
certain students have endangered lives by their actions and that
if one more pile of wood was burnt, the bonfire would be called off. 'back file.
Since the bonfire is put on for the benefit of the whole school, j One of the most interesting
it was suggested that the bonfire be made an all-school project, f items to appear in one of these
with sophomores, juniors, and seniors working together to make 'naners is as follows-
the event a success instead oi naving tne sopns collect the wood
and then having it burned before they could use it.
What do you, the students, think of this proposal? Should
the sophs continue to put on the bonfire or should each class
contribute something? Give your opinion to your home room
representative. K.T.
Flair for Fashion
By Linda Weber
They say a girl's crowning
glory is her hair but let's drop
the eye to the latest fashions in
footwear.
The almost forgotten boot of
our grade school years has march
ed to the head of the footwear
fashion parade this fall.
Boots this year, girls, are in
all lengths and for any or all
occasions.
The most fashionable fabrics
are used in the making of these
boots from soft rich velveteen
trimmed in fur for evening wear
to bold wide corduroy for sports
wear.
While eyes here in the United
States are fastened upon the boot.
Paris has introduced a unique
foot fashion in the two shoes for
one called the "Pirouette." These
shoes are made in two parts so
with a simple switch of fronts
a different shoe adorns the foot.
Pretty sly wouldn't you say? At
last, maybe we can save some
money two pair of shoes for the
price of one could it ever be?

Potatoes Have
Practical Uses
This is a true story about a
naval destroyer called the USS
O'Bannon and a Japanese sub
marine. It seems that the O'Ban
non has many high citations to
be proud of, but its crew is
proudest of a plaque presented
to them by the Maine Potato
Growers Association.
The association awarded the
ship the bronze, scroll-shaped
plaque for sinking a Japanese
submarine without firing a shot
It happened in the south Pac
ific when the O'Bannon caught
the submarine napping on the sur
face. The sub moved in too close for
the destroyers gun's to bear so
the Japanese crewmen poured on
deck with small arms.
All the O'bannon's pistols and
rifles were below in the armory.
The only close means of defense
was the potato locker.
O'Bannon crewmen bombarded
the enemy with potatoes. In
the confusion the Japanese sub
thought they were hand grenades
and submerged without closing
their hatches and so the sub sank.
