Journalism
Although the journalism class
has been rather busy putting out
the paper, the students have found
time to take a trip to the offices
of the Ashland Daily Tidings to
see how a daily paper is put out,
and several members of the class
participated in a hayride Sep

Last year, a set of science books
was loaned to A. U.S. by the Nat
ional Science Foundation. At the
end of the year, the library was
notified that the Foundation was
going to discontinue its services
and that this school would be per
mitted to keep the books already
here. Because of this coincidence,
our library now has one hundred
additional volumes on chemistry.
physics, biology, astronomy, geo
logy, and medicine. Some of these
include: The Dancing Bees, by
Frisch; Automation, by Diebold;
The White Plague, by Dubos;
Plant Life, by Hylander; Up
From the Ape, by Hooten; Space
Encyclopedia, by Dutton; and the
Darwin Reader, by Bates and
Humphrey.
For pleasure reading there is
Gone With the Wind, a novel by
Margaret Mitchell that has be
come a classic on the Civil War;
The Life Treasury of American
Folklore, an anthology of tales
with outstanding illustrations;
The Endless Hours, the story of
a man's fight to remain human
while being held prisoner by the
Chinese Communists.

MINERS BEAT BRUINS
DESPITE IMPROVEMENT
The Ashland Grizzlies were
defeated by the Yreka Miners
of Yreka, California, Friday,
October fifth. The score was 21
to 7, but the statistics showed that
it was a much closer game. This
game was the first victory for
Yreka over Ashland in five years.
The Grizzlies faltered during the
first half, but managed to keep
their spirits up enough to come
back and score a touchdown via
Dave Barger's pass to Mike Tor
reson. In the first two minutes the
Miners marched sixty-two yards
for a touchdown. John Moody,
Yreka halfback, sparked the drive
with a thirty-nine yard juant.
During the second quarter the
Miners romped eighty yards in
nine plays to make the score 14
to 0 at the half.
In the third period and most
of the fourth, the Grizzlies de
fense held the Miners. The in
terior lineman played a brilliant
game for the Bruins.
Both teams scored in the last
stanza. The Miners obtained the
ball on the Bears' 30 yard line
because of a short punt and
reached pay dirt in six plays.
With 5:14 left in the game
Dave Barger and Mike TorTeson's
pass and catch combination spark
ed a drive which reached the
end-zone with only nine seconds
left. Howie Johnsson added the
extra point.
Throughout the entire game the
Grizzlies had scoring opportunities
but were halted by cither fumbles
or three men in striped shirts
whose penalties provided Yreka
with both an offense and a
defense.
TOO MUCH MAKE-UP
SAYS COSMETIC EXPERT
Phillip Courtney, a leading cos
metics manufacturer, calls on the
teen-aged American girl to reduce
her use of cosmetics. Since cos
metics are manufactured to make
women look young, Courtney feels
that a teen-ager doesn't need to
use much make-up because she is
already young-looking.
The French-born president of
Coty International Inc., also
stated that toning down make-up
dors not mean the non-use of
make-up. Rather, "It means a
light touch in colors and textures
a reevaluation."
Courtney also stated that his
firm does not approve of a teen
er wearing eye shadow to a
football game or high school
classes. He said, "If a girl is over
16, she can wear a touch of
shadow for a big dance or a tea."
To bear out his convictioni.

Millers Surprise
Ashland Bears
Springfield's Millers came from
behind to eke out a 6 to 2 win
over the Ashland Grizzlies, here,
last Friday night before a small
hometown crowd. The Bruins had
victory in their grasp but it slid
away from them in a very dis
heartening contest.
The Bears were without the
services of two top players, Dave
Lohman and Mike Torreson. Both
were injured in the game with
Yreka.
