GRIZZLIES DEFEATED
BY REDMOND PANTHERS
The Redmond Panthers scored
in every quarter to beat -the Ash
land Grizzlies in a non-league foot
ball game to open the Grizzlies
home season on Friday, September
21. The final score was 28 to 13.
Ed Sturza of Redmond was the
outstanding player in the game.
His brilliant running from the
halfback position baffled Ash
land's defense.
The Grizzlies were much im
proved over their first game. The
offensive line gave Howie John
son tremendous protection which
enabled him to throw 10 for 18
completed passes and pass for a
touchdown to Mike Cotton. Speedy
Ron Boyce scored Ashland's other
touchdown.
Jack Gruber is a member of
the sophomore class which seems
to be loaded with talented foot
ball players. He is one of the
biggest and most promising. Jack
is 6'3" ana 190 pounds. The
Grizzly guard likes to hunt and
water ski. He plans to go to col
lege and become a dentist.
Jim Conklin, a spirited sopho
more guard,' is a bright spot in
Ashland's football future, both
this year and in years to come.
This 6 1" Grizzly likes all sports;
especially hunting, fishing, and
water skiing. He wants to go to
line at 4:00. Gerald, who placed
fourth in the district meet last
year, is a strong hope in the eyes
of his win-hungry teammates to
lead them to victory against the
Comets.

Jim Smith is not only an out
standing football player, but he
is a member of the National
Honor Society, too. Jim's top
scholastic and athletic abilities
have made him one of the most
important seniors on campus. Jim
is S'7" tall and 180 pounds. He
is a one-year lettermen in football.
Besides playing football, Jim likes
to fish. Our center wants to go
to college and become a physics
or chemistry teacher.
John Polk is a big 5'11", 185
pound tackle for the Grizzlies. He
is also a one-year letterman. Be
sides football, John is colorful
basketball player and he likes to
swim. He is a full-time athlete.
John says that he has no plans for
the future and that his favorite
class is study hall.
Bill Jury at 61", 165 pounds is
a vicious defensive tackle. He is
another of our impressive sopho
mores. His quick thinking on de
fense loads him to many tackles.
Besides playing football. Bill likes
to snow ski. His favorite class is
geometry. He plans to enter col
lege and become a mathematics
teacher.
Shasta Wolves, sparked by h
bark Jack Kennedy, rolled to a !
42-7 victory over Ashland, Satur
day night, September 15, 1962, at
Redding.
It was a roaring battle in the
first quarter, with the Wolves,
when Kennedy scooped up an Ash
land punt on his own 30 yard line
and scooped 70 yards for the tally
behind an almost perfect picket
down the sideline.
With that the Grizzlies got in
with a roaring start by talking
the lead of 7-6.
Frank Willits, Ron Boyce, Mike
Torreson. Howard Johnson, and
Dennis Ekwall were a few of the
hoys who helped make the points
for our team.

In the opening game of the
season the Ashland High Grizzlies
dropped a 42 7 encounter to the
rience and the jitters caused the
rienc and the jitters caused the
loss. In their next game, the
Grizzlies lost 28-13 to the Red
mond Panthers but Ashland show
ed in provement. Their passing
was terrific. If the Grizzlies
improve as much in this week
of practice as they did between
their last two games, their sports
editor would like to predict a
win for the Ashland Grizzlies over
Prineville Oregon, September 28,
in Prineville.
See you there!
