S & H Green Stamps GRIZZLIES DEFEATED BY REDMOND PANTHERS The Redmond Panthers scored in every quarter to beat -the Ash land Grizzlies in a non-league foot ball game to open the Grizzlies home season on Friday, September 21. The final score was 28 to 13. Ed Sturza of Redmond was the outstanding player in the game. His brilliant running from the halfback position baffled Ash land's defense. The Grizzlies were much im proved over their first game. The offensive line gave Howie John son tremendous protection which enabled him to throw 10 for 18 completed passes and pass for a touchdown to Mike Cotton. Speedy Ron Boyce scored Ashland's other touchdown. Jack Gruber is a member of the sophomore class which seems to be loaded with talented foot ball players. He is one of the biggest and most promising. Jack is 6'3" ana 190 pounds. The Grizzly guard likes to hunt and water ski. He plans to go to col lege and become a dentist. Jim Conklin, a spirited sopho more guard,' is a bright spot in Ashland's football future, both this year and in years to come. This 6 1" Grizzly likes all sports; especially hunting, fishing, and water skiing. He wants to go to line at 4:00. Gerald, who placed fourth in the district meet last year, is a strong hope in the eyes of his win-hungry teammates to lead them to victory against the Comets. Jim Smith is not only an out standing football player, but he is a member of the National Honor Society, too. Jim's top scholastic and athletic abilities have made him one of the most important seniors on campus. Jim is S'7" tall and 180 pounds. He is a one-year lettermen in football. Besides playing football, Jim likes to fish. Our center wants to go to college and become a physics or chemistry teacher. John Polk is a big 5'11", 185 pound tackle for the Grizzlies. He is also a one-year letterman. Be sides football, John is colorful basketball player and he likes to swim. He is a full-time athlete. John says that he has no plans for the future and that his favorite class is study hall. Bill Jury at 61", 165 pounds is a vicious defensive tackle. He is another of our impressive sopho mores. His quick thinking on de fense loads him to many tackles. Besides playing football. Bill likes to snow ski. His favorite class is geometry. He plans to enter col lege and become a mathematics teacher. Shasta Wolves, sparked by h bark Jack Kennedy, rolled to a ! 42-7 victory over Ashland, Satur day night, September 15, 1962, at Redding. It was a roaring battle in the first quarter, with the Wolves, when Kennedy scooped up an Ash land punt on his own 30 yard line and scooped 70 yards for the tally behind an almost perfect picket down the sideline. With that the Grizzlies got in with a roaring start by talking the lead of 7-6. Frank Willits, Ron Boyce, Mike Torreson. Howard Johnson, and Dennis Ekwall were a few of the hoys who helped make the points for our team. In their next game, the Grizzlies lost 28-13 to the Red mond Panthers but Ashland show ed in provement. Their passing was terrific.
